I found that the xrun error goes away after i do :
aplay --mmap mywav.wav
After this, playing and recording sound seems to work correctly, though
mono .wav playback is glitchy - the about half a second of audio
'repeats' after the end of the file.

from the card and no actual sound (I have unmuted the mixer
