Subsequently testing of the SB Live 24 USB and 2x Terratec Aureon 5.1
USB MKII's, Mic and Headphones work but not Line In or Front.
These cards used to work fine but I can't say when they actually changed
as I hadn't used them for a while. My applications need to use Line In
and Front.

This used to work some time ago, it's been dead in both openSUSE and
Kubuntu probably from 1.0.23.
What pavucontrol is showing:-
Both Input and Output Devices display Front Left and Front Right which
cannot be right.
Card is Soundblaster Live 24-bit External SB0490.
# rpm -q alsa
alsa-1.0.24.1-
