Are the channels unmuted?
Run 'alsamixer'.
I think it has to do with a patch to pass through AC3 on some sound
cards or something but I haven't found a solution.
I'm going to keep experimenting and hopefully figure out something that
works.

The latest CVS version of ALSA worked for me. I have now a functional
sound, but, sadly, with very volume, even with mixers at maximum.

I've successfully installed the CVS version of ALSA for an ALS4000 chipset based card.
I used alsamixer to max the volume (why does ALSA default to mute?).
