It's not a sound "card". It's a little external box connected by USB.

Hi all,
I'm having problems getting the builtin sound card on my Asus A7V8X-X to
work properly on Redhat 9.0. The documentation I have says it's using
an ADI AD1980 which uses an AC'97 codec. Redhat's soundcard
autodetection identifies it as a VIA 8233 AC97 Audio Controller, and
adds the via82cx
Does anybody have any reason to believe that this (seemingly new) USB
interface will work with ALSA? The specs look pretty good and the price
does also. I'm considering this instead of PCI interfaces since I might be
forced into a long term relationship with a laptop soon.

I have a card based on the YMF-744. Theoretically you should be able to
use the OPL3 midi port to get midi sound, but I haven't been able to get
this to work. Your best bet is to use timidity. Get a recent version that
supports the alsa sequence as a server. The good news here is that

At a minimum, you need to use sbiload (found in the alsa/tools/seq

For midi output I've been using timidity running in alsa server mode which
sounds great but seems to suck enough cpu to make midi recording spotty.
What I'd like to do is use the card's opl3 capability which to the best of
my knowledge it has (correct me if I'm wrong, please).

Is your card isapnp? If not, that is the problem - reconfigure adding

You can try two things: remove config.cache and try again. If that doesn't
work, look at config.log and find where the error message is generated. It
should show you why it thinks you don't have libasound.

I don't know anything about your card, but if it's not an isapnp card then
that might be your problem. Reconfigure and add '--with-isapnp=no'. The
only appearance in alsa drivers of the init_module routine is for isapnp
initialization. If your card is isapnp, then disregard.

sources which are required to compile alsa drivers. Or, you might have the
sources in a directory other than /usr/src/linux. If you do, then symlink
your source root to /usr/src/linux with something like:

On your redhat system you should be able to:

ln -s /boot/System.map# symlink to the /boot/System.map

Make sure you unmute and boost volume for master and pcm. They both have
to be up for the yamaha chip to work. I find that gamix is a very nice and
easy mixer to use, but alsamixer will do fine, just a little bit harder.

System is stock redhat 7.2. Alsa version 0.9.0beta12. Configured with:
./configure --with-cards=ymfpci,virmidi --with-oss=yes
--with-sequencer=yes
All compiles, installs fine. If I load ymfpci, I get sound and record and
all is well, but I can't load virmidi. I get:
# /sbin/modprobe -v snd-v
Do you have an existing alsa or oss/free? If so, you might try removing
those modules before you do the insmod. lsmod to get the list of modules
then use rmmod -r on the head module to remove the relevant modules.
