Ok, there are no "opl3sa2.o" files on the computer. Every opl3sa2.o
file has the prefix "snd-".
I ran "make menuconfig" along with the previous steps on the install
guide. I checked the Sound section. Sound Card Support is set to
M(module) and everything else is blanked out.

I have one als4000 sound card used in a mashine running gentoo unstable
with xfs-sources ( 2.4.20-xfs ). the modules load ok, no errors in dmesg
or logs, but for one strage reason i can't modify the volumes or unmute
any of the volumes. no matter what i do, using mixers or scripts. any
