I am running Gentoo. I emerged alsa-driver, alsa-lib, alsa-utils, alsa-tools, and alsa-xmms I can play CD with Grip but I don't hear anything from XMMS or any other app (although I can see the visualization in XMMS going when I play MP3 files) Is there something i have to turn on? I have played

I have a VIA 8235 and the kernel driver loads with no errors. amixer, aplay all run with no errors. doing a yes 1 > /dev/adsp or /dev/dsp runs with no errors. The problem is that there is no sound. I tried using amixer to correct this but to no avail. Is there a way to turn up the verbosity of the
