I just installed the alsa driver 0.9.4 without running into any problems. I went to
load the module for my sound card which is "snd-cmipci", and it came back with the
following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] sbin]$ ./modprobe snd-cmipci
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol __write_lock_failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol
kernel_flag_cacheline
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: unresolved symbol __read_lock_failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/sound/acore/snd.o: insmod snd-cmipci failed

I am fairly new to Linux. I have Red-Hat 8.0 with kernel 2.4.18-14.

Will I need to update my kernel or am I missing something?

I have searched all over for a solution to this problem and read that the kernel
module which exports the module "__write_loack_failed" needs to be installed, plus
something about having to install dependecies.

I also read of somebody who had the exact same errors, but with a Slack 9 distro,
mentioned that <quote:> "i partially resolved my problem: Slack 9 put kernel-headers
in /usr/include instead of putting it in /usr/src/linux/inlcude/linux so alsa had
problems finding headers while compiling, producing broken modules."

As I am new to Linux, some of this goes over my head a little, so can someone explain
to me what these people are talking about and how can I get my ALSA driver to load
properly?

Thanks,

Mike
