When I issue the above command I get only a Note: /etc/modules.conf is more
recent than /lib/modules/2.4.17-GB/modules.dep. (Suse 7.3 Linux with
Inspiron 8100)
Does anyone know what this means and how to correct it?

When I try to run alsamixer, I get snd_ctl_open failed for default: Sound
protocol is compatible. If I try to run amixer, I get Mixer attach default
error: sount protocol is not compatible.

I installed alsa driver 0.5.12a drivers as the upgrade to 2.4.17 kernel
apparently didnot get along with the old maestro3 drivers. Now the problem
is during boot, it comes up with no mixer config in /etc/asound.conf, you
have to unmute your card!

I used some time ago an old driver for the chip. There was a switch (DAC TO OUT)
which mixed all streams together and gave an output through SPDIF (but it didn't
work -> too loud sound, distorted). Now this future is anymore included. You
should ask Takashi about this ...
