From your email from yesterday I learned you have Mandrake 8.1: it should recognise your (onboard) soundcard I think. There is a very nice and active Mandrake newbie list, see http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3 to subscribe and/or search the archives. ALSA 0.5.11 drivers are included with Mandrake 8.1.
