I think you probably need more than just this one line in your
modules.conf
Here's what mine looks like for a ymfpci based card.

Being new to Alsa I'm struggling to get the Alsa drivers working for an
Ensoniq es1371 PCI card.
Using kernel 2.2.16 in slackware 7.1.
Compiled a new kernel with sound built in, but no card selected.
Collected alsa-driver-0.5.9d, alsa-lib-0.5.9 and alsa-utils-0.5.9b.

OPL3 MIDI synth is supported from ALSA 0.9.x. Latest 0.9.x release or
