Chrome has been snappy as ever on any desktop/laptop.
On the Rock Pi X it's a little slow, but it's a 5 year old Atom CPU.

authenticate to the cloud before the data store is unlocked. I’ve also noticed
this on Safari after the last couple of MacOS updates.

I've not seen that. Sounds like it's limited to your computer. Try another
computer to rule it out.
