Guys,
Perhaps you have seen something like this before: The W2K3sp1 machine which
holds the HP Openview ServiceCenter database is crashing while backing up. The
backup solution was changed very recently to TSM as BackupExec is being phased
out, but both pieces of software are crashing during ba

Hi Jeff,
In order to get a consistent backup of a SQL Server database,
you must use a tool that is integrated with SQL Server.
In the case of snapshots, you must use a tool that knows how
to work with SQL Server snapshots. SQL Server has two snapshot
mechanisms, one through the VDI interface and t

Do you know if HP Openview ServiceCenter has a VSS writer?

What version of the TSM agent are you using? Does (nt)Backup also crash

Does anyone know if it is possible to do a query (not to my knowledge)

Hi Matthew,
If it doesn't appear in VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS.. then it won't
have a writer and it shouldn't be causing the problem.
If this is an LVSA problem, you should call IBM support.
You may want to uninstall the LVSA driver..and try the backup as well.
But... if this is a production system, y
Which TSM client version do you use? (Full version, like "5.3.4.2", not

The dump analysis appears edited. For example, the exception type is

Is the Microsoft driver verifier running on this system? If so, disable

I would need more information. For example, I can understand how this can
happen if it is, say, a point-in-time restore. In that case, if the

I installed the backup archive client (5.4.2.0) on Windows 2003 Server. I ran

I scheduled the regular incremental backups to run nightly. I noticed that the
backup was taking anywhere from 4 - 9 hours to complete. The client was

No, you are good to go. What that statement assumes is that you
installed the Journal Engine before you ever ran the backup and that you
shouldn't be surprised to see a longer than normal backup take place.

Once you install the Journaling service, the TSM server will have to go
through one "old" backup of the host to get things started. This does
not mean a FULL backup, it just needs to do a regular incremental where
it must scan every item in the directory. So it means one more LONG

IBM states that once you install journal based backups that they are NOT meant
to replace incremental backups. They recommend running a regular old fashioned
