Hi,
sometimes we have problem with backups times longer than normal.
For example backup of several files (600 MB) usualy takes 1 minute to
complete and when the problem occurs it takes for over 40 minutes. In
this situation a query session on the server shows that almost all
sessions are in Run
I have this nailed down a little bit more. I ran the following:

IBMtapeutil -f /dev/IBMtape2 inquiry 80
Then I rebooted this Linux on i5 lpar (hosted underneath an i5/os lpar). I
ran the IBMtapeutil commands again and the serial numbers flipflopped

Virtualizaton? Is there a possibility that if I ran the lpar as, not a

issue?
Well, we normally only reboot every 8 weeks to allow maintenance. We do
boot occasionally but mostly to duplicate this situation for IBM. I have

Rob,
Just my 2 cents. I tend not to run TSM on a virtual/lparred environment
at all.
If you do that, you not only lose your production environment, but also
your backup.
I always try to put TSM on a separate machine (preferrable on a separate
location).
Met vriendelijke groet, with kind regards,
I don't use TSM to back up the other lpar's. I don't even think there is
an i5/os client for TSM. i5/os people tend to use one of two things. What
comes with the OS, or IBM's BRMS. I've done a few bare metal restores
with what comes with the OS and have not had a hitch.
So, I don't have that iss
I'm just in the process of implementing TSM 5.3 for the first time in our

Hi list,
I've been asked recently if it would be possible to build a TSM server
on a P520 LPAR, using i/o virtualization.

Hi Angus !
You'll probably get somehow disapointed, but there's no way to do what
you're asking !
TSM wants a new tape for each DB backup, and the only way to spare your
precious scratch volumes would be to use some form of disk storage, thru
the mean of a sequential-on-disk device class ...

Angus,
You can use the delete volhist command to move your older db backup tapes to
scratch status.
Look at help del volhist. There are various options to control which tapes
handled.

By setting the DRMDBBACKUPEXPIREDAYS, allows you to automatically
recycle the TSM DB tapes. This is usually set to something like a 5 day
cycle, based on how realsitic it is that you would want to recover your
TSM environment back to. This means there will always be a critical
volume of tapes use
Okay, I may rely on mirroring then. If I do a DB backup every 4 hours it'll
cost 6 tapes a day and each one will only have a few MB of data.
For some reason, the tapes used for DB Backup aren't listed when I execute a

Thanks again.

Angus,
Look at help query volhist
This will show you the db tapes and other special tapes

For protection ensure that the ROLL FORWARD mode is on and there is
enough log space to take account for load during the period between TSM
DB Backups. This can be up to 13.2GB. Also set the Database backup
trigger, and ensure there is always scratch tapes. Put the DB and Log

Thanks guys. Lots of stuff there to get my teeth into.

Hi,
If possible, you can change your config to do only one full db backup to
tape (and send this one off-site allong with your copy tapes) and all
other (incr.) db backups to a devclass type=file, where the file is
pointing to a network share (at another location).

Is your interest in sharing the FC adapter so you can share disks? The problem
is, I do not believe that a tape library and tape drives are sharable in this
fashion. If you want to share disk, use separate FC adapter for this, shared
out through the virtual scsi of the vio server. Use another
Greetings,
We are backing up several NetApp NAS filers using TSM NDMP
capabilities. We have about 700 TB backup data. Aside from issues
with TOCs, copy pools and some others (which I am confident TSM
development is working to remedy !), we're pretty happy with the service.

Has anyone tried restoring files that were originally backup up on an old
"NETWARE" client (Filespace Type NTW:LONG).
I'm trying to restore the"NETWARE" files using "VIRTUALNODE" option on a NT
client.
-The reasoning is that in the near future we may say goodbye to the netware

Mike,
You need to obtain the "x64" version.
This is version DP for SQL 5.3.3.
It is available on Passport Advantage.
Thanks,
