I believe I did a poor job asking the question due to the responces. I am concerened
specifically with how the TSM client backs up the profile information (ntuser.dat) on
Windows 2003 servers. As has been pointed out many times on the list with 2000 and XP
you can get ntuser.dat files that

VSS is supported for backing up system files, but not for backing up
open files. (At least, that's my understanding. We were talking
originally about ntuser.dat, which is not backed up as a system file.

Eh? From the TSM 5.2.2 Windows client manual:

On Windows 2003 it appears that a user that is currently logged on does not have their
ntuser.dat file backed up under adsm.sys like Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Was eliminating this done for a specific reason? Or is the profile data backed up
differently on Windows 2003

Hi TSMers,
During scheduled backup few TSM clients are getting failed to take backup of
NTUSER.DAT/LOG files with return code 12, How can I avoid this, Please
kindly share your thoughts.
TSM server 5.1.7.0, TSM clients 5.1.x and 5.2.x.

Ok, now I'm rereading posts. UserA's ntuser.dat is copied to the adsm.sys
directory. These are not automatically restored with the registry restore
so they will not overwrite the Administrators profile. You manually copy
UserA's profile from adsm.sys if you want to.

Re-reading most notifiable posts (kept in my Knowledge Base) I made a
second thought on this one. The result:
1. UserA is logged during backup. "C:\Documents and
Settings\UserA\NTUSER.DAT" & "C:\Documents and
Settings\UserA\ntuser.dat.LOG" are locked by Windows but are b
r the profile backups and their timestamps. If you are
running the 4.2 client, just do a search for NTUSER.DAT in adsm.sys, check
the timestamps. You will probably find that the profile IS being backed up
there when the registry backup occurs. If you are running a lower level of
the client, you

MOST of the time, I think it is ok to exclude NTUSER.DAT (& USRCLASS.DAT for

Yes, that is the registry key name. I assume that's because the contents of
NTUSER.DAT become the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry key when the user is logged
on.
With the 4.2 client, that file in ADSM.SYS is actually named NTUSER.DAT,
which makes it easier to figure out.
I don't have a

I hope this helps.
