GPFS FAQs indicates that virtual SCSI is supported. Can I mix physical and
virtual AIX systems in a cluster for LAN-free backup? (talking about
feasibility, not performance).
Thank you,
Mehdi
NPIV works well with both disk and tape, but make sure you take in account the
fact that the virtualized hba you get on your client lpar is not the same kind
you get on the VIO.
The output of lsdev -Cc adapter is ;
Fcs0 Available C2-T1 Virtual Firbre Channel Client Adapter
Fcs1 Available C2-T1
With VIOS v2, VIO servers can virtualize HBAs. So it is possible to run
LAN-free via a virtualized HBA. I haven't done it yet, so can't speak
to performance.

Hi,

In many cases people are using VIO server, if this is your case you will need
to add hbas dedicates only for LPAR lanfree Backup.

I've not tried it yet, but NPIV should work OK. TSM wouldn't know the
underlying connectivity.
Not forgetting the strong recommendation NOT to share disk and tape

Thank you for the reply.
Our only way out was to kill the TSM StorageAgent process and restart
it. Lanfree backups then continued as normal. For some of the messages

It involves setting up a second storage agent on the Windows client.
First, make a directory called storageagent2 in parallel with the first
storageagent directory (e.g. c:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\storageagent2).
Then, copy the dsmsta.opt file from the storageagent1 directory to th

Yes, you need to zone tape drives to the machine running Storage Manager.
Multiple tape drives can use the same HBA.
Tape and Disk cannot coincide on the same HBA. You need a separate adapters
for disk and tape. This stems from the days of S360 (and earlier?) where

Hi Paul,
I agree with you on the small files and LAN-Free - BUT - we have

there is a need for Lan-Free on Netware - bringing me to the

The reality is this. File system backups of small files are not a good
candidate for SAN Tape backups. Netware does not run any large file
databases, so there is no SAN Storage Agent requirement. The answer is

It is my understanding that LAN-free backup works only with Windows and
UNIX clients.

I am actually surprised you even got this to work. When you define in

Hi William,
Tivoli doesn't allow to use diskpools for LAN free backup. At least this
feature is not available in 4.1 version. The Tivoli implementation of SAN
allows to share tape devices. Backup data directly moves from Tivoli storage
agent to tape and metadata is stored in server through LAN. I
Hi Bill,
If you are using an ESS with the Flashcopy soft, Yes, in some
circumstances, you can do LAN-free backup.
If not is this *very* particular case, I'm afraid not !
