I have been reading this thread from the beginning, and I just wanted to
place my "two cents" in here :-)Veritas actually wrote the code for
MS long ago. MS has adopted the basic backup-exec code and improved on
it a bit..This being right from both MS and Veritas techs...

I would be prepared to assume it. I once tried to contact Veritas for
support when a client was trying to use Backup Exec to backup Exchange
databases to a TSM server. We couldn't get it to talk to the server. Not

I do unconventional things. Since SARA is more or less in the buisiness of
doing unconventional things (like running TSM!) this should be no shock

Indeed. IBM periodically gets darts when another vendor implements a
database backup/restore capability not in TSM. As you'll find

r the question of TSM vs Backup Exec. Again, it is like
comparing a push scooter to an 18 wheeler. There is little in common other
than both have some axles and wheels.
Alex puts it in perspective pretty well.

Think of backup environments as sorted by size. As a rough guesstimate, and
I'm sure people have different opinions on sizing,
NTBackup is for 1 machine.
Backup Exec is good for 1-10, maybe even 20 machines.
Veritas NetBackup is good for 10-50 machines. (Is anybody having a good

I've always thought of NTBackup as the push scooter. I think Backup Exec
is more like a Vespa (with apologies to Vespa owners). Much cheaper and
easier to operate than TSM for one user, only able to move one type of
cargo (NT data, and that in small quantities), and much more likely to
This is like asking about a 18 wheeler versus a push scooter. What are you
really interested in finding out?

A few questions related to the above-mentioned:
1. How does TSM handle data that was backed up from a Backup Exec client?
2. Do you register that node on TSM?
3. Can you generate a backup set for that node?
4. Does versioning of files apply to that node?
Any comments will be greatly
Yes. Backup Exec has a TSM interface that will do just what you describe.
I tested it a couple of years ago, worked fine. (We ended up not using it
because there was just too much data to send across our network at the time,
but that was a network issue, not a problem with the Backup Exec
The answer is yes.
You need to define a storage pool for the BE on the TSM server.
See the module for this on the Veritas site.

Can Backup Exec be setup in such a way that it sends data off to TSM
without having a storage device locally attached to the server it's running
on? I.e. TSM handles the backup device (library) as well as manage all the
volumes.
Any comments will be greatly appreciated
Jacques Butcher.
