There are a lot of issues with VSS backups for system state - even apply
the 3 VSS fixes you need to apply does not guarantee you will get a 100%
reliable system state backup.

It restored a couple of empty files, here are the errors:

You might want to take a look at MS KB940184 - it deals with the VSS
errors.
Deleting the registry key mentioned in this KB article and restrting the
client did the trick for us.
