There is one benefit to backing up the system objects every night. Should
you ever need to do a bare metal restore, the system objects will be cached
on disk. Of course, all the other user files has been pushed out of the
cache; but who cares if user restores require tape mounts.
I'm glad you posted this as I have the same problem with this idiotic
repetative backup of unchanged objects. It has driven my TSM server to its
knees. Since I hadn't seen other postings, I thought I had a unique problem

Hi Bill,
Here's what I know so far:
These files are defined to be part of "Win2K system protected files". (This
is actually explained pretty well in the 3.7/4.1 Tech Guide Redbook;
additional info in the 4.1.2 Win client Redbook.) They are cataloged as
such by Win2K (I don't know for sure but
You would think if TSM is storing each system file that is backed up as a
separate object in the Database, that it would be smart enough to only back
up the "system files" if any of the individual files had changed.
Have you tried submitting your requirement to the ADSM-R list also?
My personal
Wanda, thanks for the info.
I was aware of this feature so I am staying on 4.1.1.16 where 'system objects'
is not in the default domain. For each w2k machine I make an additional
schedule to back up 'system objects' every 4 weeks.
I wonder what is the difference between backing up these files t
Yes, that works, as far as it goes.
You get a bootable system.
But, if you do not restore your registry, you lose all your customization.
And the doc says you should not restore registry without restoring the rest

I haven't figured out any way to do that. Those files are cataloged in a

No. By definition, the way TSM has implemented SYSTEM OBJECT backup, it
backs up those files whether they are changed or not. Always.
And we can't exclude them and retain the ability to do bare-metal restores.

Oh, you could, as Gerhard noted on May 25th, post to the Oxford University TSM
2001 Symposium User Requirements Survey for the TSM Symposium
at http://tsm-symposium.oucs.ox.ac.
The UPGRADEDB parameter causes the server to update some of the database
meta-data. It does not have to convert any database data. Because of
this, it is not sensitive to the size of the actual database and should
take seconds to execute regardless of the database size.
Well, in the collective wisdom of IBM, I wonder why they would "officially
