Is the INSTALLLOCATION directory a per-machine location ? If it's always per-user then you can ignore the ICE. You condition won't work however. A component condition determines whether a component is installed or not. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa368007%28v=vs.85%29 .aspx Since REMOVE does not equal ALL when installing, the condition will be false and the component never gets installed. -Original Message- From: Nelya Iva [mailto:nelya@gmail.com] Sent: 14 September 2012 11:54 To: wix-users@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [WiX-users] Fixing ICE57 on perUser installation Our application writes some settings to the registry into the HKCU hive. Re: [WiX-users] wix ftdi drivers
James, I realised the RemoveFolder tags are necesary because I am installint into userprofile, not for all users on a computer as I hope it want ask admin permission to install. If I remove difx:Driver tag then I can reproduce the file hierarchy - actually not as originally is, since there are two .inf in the same directory. And, as I read somewhere, each driver must be int seperate directory for wix (and thus also in a seperate component). I solved it that way that both created directories contain it's own subdirectory with x86 files (originally it was common). I took a look of all needed files in both inf. files. So the bottom line is I can manage to procuse file hierarchy as I wish (as I suppose is expected). When I uncomment difx:Driver tags the same errors as till now: C:\Users\hob\Documents\WiX\ftdiinstall.wsx(33) : error LGHT0094 : Unresolved ref erence to symbol 'CustomAction:MsiProcessDrivers' in section 'Product:{E00E5A99- 913D-4C68-98BF-B43A471CD45D}'. This is when I use: light.exe -ext WixDifxAppExtension ftdiinstall.wixobj When I use: C:\Users\hob\Documents\WiX>light.exe -ext WixDifxAppExtension -ext "D:\tmp\ftdi\difxapp_x86.wixlib" ftdiinstall.wixobj (you see I even tried with absolute path) it says: light.exe : error LGHT0144 : The extension 'D:\tmp\ftdi\difxapp_x86.wixlib' could not be loaded because of the following reason: Could not load file or assembly 'file:///D:\tmp\ftdi\difxapp_x86.wixlib' or one of its dependencies. It looks like FileShare (and User) is included in the WixUtilExtension. Have you added that as a referenced assembly in your project and added the "util" namespace to your Wix element (/http://schemas.microsoft.com/wix/UtilExtension/)? [WiX-users] .NET 4 installation best practice and burn support
What is best practice for installing .NET 4 with an application, and how does burn support it? Since.NET 4.5 replaces .NET 4.0, rather than installs separately, the installation choices differ from in previous versions. For an application that can use either .NET 4.0 or 4.5, what is the best practice to install? Here are the options and tradeoffs I am aware of: Option 1: Install .NET 4.0 (just what you need) Pros: None known Option 2: Install .NET 4.5 if .NET 4.5 is not present Pros: User won't have to install .NET 4.5 later for future apps. App won't experience a .NET version change when user later does upgrade to .NET 4.5. App immediately gets performance improvements of .NET 4.5. Option 3: Install .NET 4.5 only if neither .NET 4.x is present Pros: Much faster deployment than option 2 if .NET 4.0 is already installed. If it's not, then the advantages of option 2 apply. As far as I can tell, the best practice would be option 2 if the performance improvements are import and option 3 if average deployment speed is important. Does this sound right? Am I missing any advantage to option 1? As far as burn goes, option 2 is straightforward to implement. But can you and how do you do option 3 in burn? (This question is an expanded version of one I had posted several days ago, but hadn't heard a response to. I'm hoping someone can help with this.) Thanks, Ed -- Got visibility? Re: [WiX-users] wix ftdi drivers
> James, > > I realised the RemoveFolder tags are necesary because I am installint into > userprofile, not for all users on a computer as I hope it want ask admin > permission to install. 1. Drivers run in kernel mode and have complete control over everything on the computer at the lowest level. How would you expect to install such a potentially-dangerous piece of software without being administrator? There is no such thing as a "per-user" driver install. There is no such thing as non-administrators installing a driver. Any such thing would be a pretty serious breach of security in any operating system - not just Windows. You'd best set up your Windows installer package to install as per-machine, and not per-user. I don't see how a per-user installer that loads a driver would make any sense at all, or have a happy ending. Ours installs as per-machine and I've had zero complaints about it. 2. Why would you need RemoveFolder tags just for a per-user install? Again, this makes no sense and you shouldn't need them even on a per-user installation. > > If I remove difx:Driver tag then I can reproduce the file hierarchy - actually > not as originally is, since there are two .inf in the same directory. Well, yeah. You specified that difxapp_x86.wixlib was a WiX extension. WiX extensions are managed .NET assemblies. So it's no surprise you ran into this error. Look at the light syntax for properly linking in a wixlib file. Wixlib files are NOT WiX extensions, they are very different. -- Got visibility? [WiX-users] Problem with custom actions and
Hi, We have an installer that installs a managed Windows Service. The service listens to a http/s port and the installer gives the account that should execute the service access rights to listen to the port (ie netsh http add urlacl). When the installation is complete, we want to start the service and open a browser that points to the service. The access rights are given to the user using a managed Custom Action. During installation the user can select if a new account should be created for the service or if an existing account should be used. If the user selects an existing account, everything is ok. The account gets the "logon as service" property set, the account gets the proper urlacl rights and the service is installed with the selected account and the service starts after installation. However, if the user selects a new account, the service won't start. The user will be created with "logon as service" set and the service will be installed with the new user account. However, the service won't start because the account hasn't got the urlacl rights. Looking at the logfile generated by msiexec we can see that the "PrepareAddHttpAdminNamespaceReservation" action hasn't been invoked. Why is that? If we change the to NOT start the service during install (ie remove the start attribute from the element) everything is ok. The account gets created and given proper rights but the service obviously not started. I can however start the service manually after installation. We have tried to move the custom actions for urlacls as early as possible in the install sequence but without success. Any hints? We use the stable release of WiX 3.6 Below is the relevant parts from our WiX project (the USERSOURCE property is set by a custom dialog). [WiX-users] Pyro -bt and -bu flags
One of the problems I've encountered when using .wixpdb files to create a patch is there's no way to bind the binary data into them. So, if you move them, there's a good chance the paths to your source files won't work anymore. Yes, I want a single unified installation. The flow of UI would be something like: 1- Welcome 2- Ask for user inputs (checkbox, filling some values) 3- The user inputs can now be passed to m1 and m2 if they need that specific info 4- m1 runs with its input 5- m2 runs with its input 6- finish I wrote steps 4 ,5 individual because I think then I can reuse most the old msi code , okay ? I guess the main challenge for me it to create a unified UI for the both msi (newbie). Once I have the individual params for the individual msi, I can run msiexec one after the other. [WiX-users] MSI property not being read in via custom action?
Hi, I have a property being set to 0 at start in product.wxs In a C# custom action I set it to 1: SetSessionProperty(session, "DATABASE_CREATE_SCHEMA", "1"); where SetSessionPropertyis: private static void SetSessionProperty(Microsoft.Deployment.WindowsInstaller.Session session, string propertyName, string value) { try { session[propertyName] = value; } catch (Exception ex) { WriteErrorLogInstall(session, "Exception when executing SetSessionProperty.", ex, true); } } the above is done during the "dialog" viewing stage... I call this custom action: NOT Installed in another custom action (same C# custom action dll) I read the property: string createDatabaseSchema = GetSessionProperty(session, "DATABASE_CREATE_SCHEMA", true); MessageBox.Show("DATABASE_CREATE_SCHEMA is: " + createDatabaseSchema); where GetSessionProperty is: private static string GetSessionProperty(Microsoft.Deployment.WindowsInstaller.Session session, string propertyName, bool isCustomActionData) { string sessionProperty = ""; try { if (isCustomActionData) { sessionProperty = session.CustomActionData[propertyName]; } else { sessionProperty = session[propertyName]; } } catch (Exception ex) { WriteErrorLogInstall(session, "Exception when executing GetSessionProperty.", ex, true); } return sessionProperty; } The messagebox returns a blank value, meaning the property isn't being set properly or read in properly?
