NT4 to W2K notebook fails
Hi, I'm trying to connect from a NT4 WS to a notebook (W2K Pro installed). It keeps saying "VNC authentication failed", i use the same password everywhere. Everything I try doesn't seem to work, even copying the REG settings from my NT4 station to the notbook. - To unsubscribe, send a message with the line: unsubscribe vnc-list to [EMAIL PROTECTED] See also: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html -
RE: font problem? - please help
Thanks for the help. I tried what you said with no luck, but in the course of looking for where to put the extra line, I figured out that when trying to set the variable $XFConfigPath, my vncserver script set it to be '/etc/X11/XF86Config' when mine is '/etc/X11/XF86Config-4'. I changed the script to the latter and it works fine. Should I do ln -s /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config for the future? Or will that just confuse things for other programs who will think that I am running X v3 (instead of 4.0.2)? Ctrl + Esc in NT
I have seen messages about Ctrl + Esc not working in WinVnc in the NT OS. I have seen messages about people saying to add the Shift key to this sequence. This will not work because this is the shortcut for 'Windows Task Manager'. But I have just stumbled across the key sequence of 'Alt + S' which seems to work on at least WinNT machines that I have come across. Win2K, VNC, ZoneAlarm
Hi, I searched through the archives and saw that someone was having reboot problems with Win2K and VNC. I also noticed someone indicating that they were having problems when VNC and ZoneAlarm were combined. I have all three as part of my configuration, although I don't have the 'reboot' problem (I have a different one, since I blew away my machine, I replaced Win98 with Win2K, and I got a later version of VNC and ZoneAlarm... now when I 'restart'... the machines shuts down... goes to the dark screen... but, never re-starts back up. Similarly before I could 'shut down', and the machine would power itself down. Now I just get the 'it is safe to turn off your machine', and I have to physically turn the machine off). I am running VNC as a service (so that if I re-start, VNC is running and I can log in remotely. Or even if a user has logged off VNC is still running, so I can log back in). So what happens is... since VNC is running as a service, it starts before ZoneAlarm (which is an app, that runs after a user logs into Win2K). This causes remote access via VNC to NOT WORK. It essentially times-out or can't get in. I had a friend try to log in... he kept getting non-recognition and I could see his attempts at port 5800 within my firewall software. However, if I log in at the computer... (hence, VNC was running as a service, then after log in, ZoneAlarm is running) If I stop the service, and re-start the VNC as an app, VNC remote works fine. It seems like the sequence has to be ZoneAlarm (first), then VNC (second). I'm guessing that app versus service is not important... ie. if I re-started the VNC service instead of running the app., as long as it's started AFTER ZoneAlarm, I'd still be ok. Is anyone familiar with this ? Have a solution ? I want to try to retain it as a service, so that I don't have to be logged in at the computer, to get in remotely. I even thought of giving up on that, and creating a batch file, that could be run... so that ZoneAlarm starts first, then VNC... giving up on the no-user-logged-in-but-can-still-log-in-remotely scenario. I created a batch file with two lines.. the first line running ZoneAlarm, the second running VNC... but when I run the batch file... after running ZoneAlarm,... it never returns to continue to run VNC. I'm probably missing something very simple and basic. The file is pretty straigthforward : "c:\Program Files\ZoneAlarm\zonealarm.exe" -nopopup "c:\Program Files\ORL\VNC\WinVNC.exe" -run Can someone please help me out? RE: Massive unanswerable problem with CDE & VNC (Running VNC on Solaris)
I've been able to run VNC on Solaris 2.6, 7, and 8 on Sparc and Intel platforms just fine. Here are instructions on how to configure VNC to run on Solaris thru inetd: Assumptions: a) VNC binaries have been successfully created and placed in /usr/local/vnc directory. b) root access to machine to be able to edit services and inetd.conf files. c) Support 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 @ 256 color depth (change it according to your preference) d) Ports 5950, 5951, 5952 are free (change it according to your preference). e) Access control disabled (no VNC password is asked prior to connecting). Remove -ac switch if you wish access control enabled. f) No shared sessions allowed. Remove -nevershared switch to allow shared sessions. g) When a user disconnects his VNC connection, terminate the X session. Remove -once switch to allow continuation of sessions (not recommended for security!). 1. Append the following lines to your /etc/inet/services file: # VNC Server vnc-640x480x8 5950/tcp vnc-800x600x8 5951/tcp vnc-1024x768x8 5952/tcp 2. Append the following lines to your /etc/inet/inetd.conf file: # VNC Server vnc-640x480x8 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/vnc/Xvnc-50 Xvnc vnc-800x600x8 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/vnc/Xvnc-51 Xvnc vnc-1024x768x8 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/vnc/Xvnc-52 Xvnc 3. Create these three script files and put them in /usr/local/vnc: Xvnc-50 === #!/bin/sh /usr/local/vnc/Xvnc -inetd -query localhost -once -fp tcp/localhost:7100 -geometry 640x480 -depth 8 -ac -nevershared Xvnc-51 === #!/bin/sh /usr/local/vnc/Xvnc -inetd -query localhost -once -fp tcp/localhost:7100 -geometry 800x600 -depth 8 -ac -nevershared Xvnc-52 === #!/bin/sh /usr/local/vnc/Xvnc -inetd -query localhost -once -fp tcp/localhost:7100 -geometry 1024x768 -depth 8 -ac -nevershared Note: Each script file is only 2 lines long. The second line of text is just too long to fit in the same line, but it should be in the same line. 4. Issue these commands to force inetd to re-read the new configuration (or reboot machine): ps -ef |grep inetd kill -1 PID Note: The first command will give you the process ID (PID) of inetd. The second command will issue a SIGHUP on the inetd process, where PID is the process ID from the first command. 5. Use a VNC client and point it to the machine's IP address (or hostname) and specify the desired port. Example: myserver:5951 (will connect to machine at 800x600 resolution) Done. > I've been having a problem with VNC with Solaris 8 that has been > driving me > CRAZY. I am an avid Windows 2000 Terminal Services and Terminal Services Advanced Client user. However, something that I am setting up in my home does not work with TS. Anything new on this? Here we even tried switching the IP addresses between two servers. One is accessible using VNC, the other is not. Re: Win2K, VNC, ZoneAlarm
I am the one who had problems with win98 and Zone Alarm and got no response so far. Hope I can help. You can edit Zone Alarm to allow the ports you need to have open for Zone Alarm to work. Then the order in which the service start won't matter. I had a similar problem but fixed it by allowing the VNC server to access the local network ( that is another question - do u want VNC to access the net or just a local network) because Zone Alarm can sometimes allow the first time for a service to run, but it will not after is engaged its "lock" when the screen saver kicks in. Hope that helps and it doesnt confuse u more Carlos --- Andy Woo <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hi, > > I searched through the archives and saw that someone > was having reboot problems with Win2K and VNC. Re: KDE2 and vnc
with kde2, you must have vncserver run at depth of 24. Vncviewer can run at any depth, it must be done by vncserver. I edited /usr/sbin/vncserver script to accomplish this. --- Steve Jacobsen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I'm trying to setup a server on my linux box and > connect from my win2k PC. Re: WinVNC and W2K Server "Connectino Closed" message.
Run the service with the DebugMode and DebugLevel settings in the registry set to high values, and look at the log. Before the client disconnect messages, there should be some form of error message, indicating the nature of the problem. Re: AW: password protected screensaver causes "connection closed by peer"
Well that explains it. I have no "send ctrl+alt+del" in my right clicked task bar menu. I have only Properties, Add New Client, Kill All Clients, About WinVNC, and Close WinVNC. I tried shift+ctrl+alt+del, but nothing happens. I tried this on the remote Unix client and on the PC itself. I tried this using all of the shift & del keys available on each keyboard. At this point, if I run a screen locker, like I want to do when leaving work for the night, then I have to be at the laptop keyboard in order to unlock the screen because a password protected Win2K screen kills the remote VNC viewer client. Any more suggestions? Thanks On 12 September 2001 at 2:41, Stefane Bridy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: That's the menu you get by right-clicking on the task bar button of the open VNC connection. Those are the options if you clicked on the icon for VNC Server in the System Tray. Be sure you are clicking on the Task Bar button for the Viewer's connection. Alternatively, bring up VNC Viewer, connect to the system, and right click in the Title Bar for the window. This should bring up a number of options, including 'Send Ctl-Alt-Del'. Re: AW: password protected screensaver causes "connection closed by peer"
My viewer has no task bar. All I have is a Motif-ish (CDE?) window with it's normal move, resize, etc. controls. There are no VNC controls on the title bar for the VNC viewer window. That's on the Unix (Solaris) side. If I try to bring up a viewer on the PC, I get "loopback connections disabled" and I see nothing in the VNC server properties that would enable it. Re: Compatibility
I just answered my own question. After several attempts and many mistakes I was able to get VNC and Terminal Services running on the same machine. The "Remote Control" effect I was looking for now works. I can now play my MP3's which are on the server in the basement on my stereo in the living room, and control the play list from any computer in the house. XDM -inetd issues and java io exceptions........
Recently (and suddenly) our S70 is taking 30-60 seconds t provide an XDM session. At first I thought that the connection was failing, but the logs (below) show that everything was working. And after you finally get and use a session when you exit CDE you get java.io.IOException: Unknown RFB message type -1 If I set the inetd options on the S70 to -broadcast I get a snappy response from an ancient 230 that reflects none of these problems. I am using binaries provided by Jan in cz but have not been able to get in touch to find out what he did to get inetd working on aix and these binaries are only on the S70 (not on the 230..). Does anyone know whether the aix patches that were posted address the -inetd issue? ANyone seen this behavior? RE: AW: password protected screensaver causes "connection closed by peer"
Since you are on Unix (Solaris) use Shift+Alt+Ctrl+Dele This will send it to the client. but on my Sun box I just need to use Ctrl+Alt+Dele as Solaris doesn't intercept this. But on Solaris Alt+F4 will close the viewer so Shift+Alt+F4 will close the window in the viewer. Hope this helps. RE: KDE2 and vnc
That one you might be able to ignore. I see it as your viewer is requesting an encoding type that is not supported via your Xvnc. e.g. your viewer is tight and your server is standard ATT. Re: AW: password protected screensaver causes "connection closed by peer"
The behavior here, on Solaris, is that shift+ctrl+alt+del does nothing in the viewer. Neither does ctrl+alt+del, nor shift+alt+f4. alt+f4 exits the viewer, as expected. Sigh... Re: Win2K, VNC, ZoneAlarm
Actually, I am confused. How do you edit ZoneAlarm to allow specific ports to be open ? Do you need ZoneAlarm PRO for that? Besides, ZoneAlarm is set to recognize to allow VNC to work... How does the sequence of which starts first, affect ZoneAlarm's ability to allow VNC to listen to port 5800 ? I disengage the lock. And I was trying to access my machine remotely, through VNC, through ZoneAlarm, to VNC on the home machine.
