I've tried depth = 24 also and it did not work for me. I am concerned that
regardless of what I set it to the log continues to report "depth 8".

with kde2, you must have vncserver run at depth of 24.
Vncviewer can run at any depth, it must be done by
vncserver. I edited /usr/sbin/vncserver script to
accomplish this.
