RE: VNC under Windows ME
Do you have internet connection sharing turned on? It's a strange problem to be sure, I'm not running a "network" as such. Simply a cable modem connection to the internet. From my work PC I'd like to access my desktop at home. Yet with my version of Windows ME the applet will not initialize at all, no error message is generated and no SysTray icon to indicate the activity of the program exists. Re: VNC under Windows ME
I don't believe it's a matter of internet sharing or even browser usage. The applet will not initialize under my Windows ME. I have not indicator in the SysTray to show that the service is up and running. I have an FTP server that works fine and can connect remotely via PC anywhere. I'd much rather use VNC if at all possible. It looks like I may have to move to Win2000. - Original Message - From: "Kurt Mysker" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, April 07, 2001 8:20 AM Subject: RE: VNC under Windows ME > Do you have internet connection sharing turned on? > > Kurt Mysker > "Philosophizing is nothing more than looking into a mirror that is looking > into another mirror, and picking the layer you like best." - Yoursker > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Charles Coleman > Sent: Friday, April 06, 2001 10:34 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: Re: VNC under Windows ME > > > Thanks for the responses everyone. Re: VNC under Windows ME
Well, I got your password logon so the service is up and running... How do you connect to your machine? I have as good as a copy of that in my mailbox. Ever since I made this tiny modification to the Java viewer (http://www.workspot.net/~harmen/vnc/) that allowed me to connect through my ISPs packet filtering firewall, I get mail about VNC and firewalls at least once a week. So I have been thinking about setting up a FAQ for this. (Well, actually I tried to write an enhanced viewer, but that didn't work out see link in sig) I'm not sure how to go about this though: lots of people haven't got a clue about proxies, firewalls and networking in general. And I don't want to advise on how to break a local security policy, unless I trust they know what they're doing (about 20% of people who mail me work in the IT department). So maybe I shouldn't make it too easy with a FAQ? -- Harmen http://www1.tip.nl/~t515027/brandgang/ - To unsubscribe, send a message with the line: unsubscribe vnc-list to [EMAIL PROTECTED] See also: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html -
secure vnc
First let me say, i'm aware of Mindbright's Mindvnc which is no longer supported. I want to run a java vnc client securely from any machine, even those annoyingly restricted internet cafe's and ADSL which is NAT'ed and run java vnc client through ssh to a static ip Linux server running vncserver. Can/will this work, or is the solution to use ssl/java vnc client? I've done some hunting around the web which mostly talks about using local ssh forwarding. Can this work with 2 applets, one doing local ssh forwarding, and another running the java vnc client? I apologise if this has been asked before, the search thing is either not working or giving no results back. many thanks Darren - To unsubscribe, send a message with the line: unsubscribe vnc-list to [EMAIL PROTECTED] See also: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html -
extended java client
Tried to contact the author of mfviewer, the extended java vnc client and got a bounce. Muddassar Farooq <[EMAIL PROTECTED]># I was experimening with his java client on a local LAN environment. Which said ... Just given vnc a tryout and a java client from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/extras.html#altjava which i'm very impressed with. Unfortunately the java client is crashing a lot at the moment, any ideas what causes this? Setup for client is NT4 WKS, SP6a, to a FreeBSD 4.2-Stable, vnc from ports tree aka vnc-3.3.3r2_unixsrc.tar.gz. I'm starting the server with just vncserver & And the client with C:\temp1\mfviewer>jview vncviewer 192.168.123.205:1 RFB server supports protocol version 3.3 VNC authentication succeeded sending client init Desktop name is root's X desktop (abc.xyz.com:1) Desktop size is 1024 x 768 disconnect It connects for a few minutes and then crashes. C:\temp1\mfviewer>jview Microsoft (R) Command-line Loader for Java Version 5.00.3309 Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1996-2000. All rights reserved. PS. Are there better java vnc clients / more stable? regards Darren - To unsubscribe, send a message with the line: unsubscribe vnc-list to [EMAIL PROTECTED] See also: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html -

Darren Evans wrote: > > First let me say, i'm aware of Mindbright's Mindvnc which is no longer > supported. Yes, but they seem to be planning a SSH (& SSL) API, so rolling your own secure Java VNC viewer will be easy. Well I guess that will be a problem, because in strict-security environments you may not be able to grant an applet permission to connect to a local proxy. And allthough Java allows for HTTP tunneling restricted applets also, the tunneling technique has too much overhead for something noisy like VNC (HTTP-->RFB). > > Can/will this work, or is the solution to use ssl/java vnc client? If you're talking about HTTPS tunneling (SSL-->HTTP-->RFB) I had thought this was the solution to two problems: 1) A restricted Java applet could connect out using a http/security proxy, and the proxy would just have to handle 1 CONNECT request for as long as the ssl/http connection was persistent. 2) The connection would be secure. I was very dissapointed when I tried this, and found the browser will do a CONNECT request for each HTTP request. > > I've done some hunting around the web which mostly talks about using > local ssh forwarding. > > Can this work with 2 applets, one doing local ssh forwarding, > and another running the java vnc client? <...> I suggest you wait for the MindTerm SSH-API, and maybe use MindVNC until then. -- Harmen http://www1.tip.nl/~t515027/brandgang/ - To unsubscribe, send a message with the line: unsubscribe vnc-list to [EMAIL PROTECTED] See also: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html -
