Re: got a major problem!

2025-02-10 Thread David Grossoehme
I'd had a similar problem to this on my first phone, and it required a
sign in before it would do anything.  This could be your problem, as a
guess.  If you have tried to sign in more then 3 times consistently, it
won't do anything.  Sit it down and leave it for a day or so, then come
back and sign into it.  Hopefully, this may help.

If you aren't signed into the phone, then Siri can't respond, because

Leaving it alone for an hour, should enable restarting/signing in again
with the passcode. Another failure then, means another hour out in the
cold, and so on, until the sign-in passcode is done right. .

If the phone is on, or frozen, then VoiceOver should speak when the
phone is ready for a new sign-in attempt (after an hour or whatever
time-out is set at the moment.)

I think a sighted person can see how many minutes are left on the screen
as the clock is counting down to re-sign-in. .

RE: Blocked message setting

2025-02-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You may have to call your provider and see what is happening, I can't think of
any Setting like this except to make sure you go to Settings > Apps > Messages
and make sure you turn on "Sent as text message" which means if somebody has an
iPhone but for some reason they or you are not having any data connection that
any iMessage is sent as a regular text message.
I would also tap on "RCS Messaging" and turn it on if it is not on, this is a
cross platform standard which makes sending text messages to Android users more
secure and it will show you delivery status as with iMessage.
Near the top is also a Setting where you can select your default messaging app,
not sure in which version of iOS this was introduced because I think it's new
in iOS 18 and maybe even was introduced with iOS 18.2 or 18.3 and I don't know
which version you are on. If you have it make sure it is set to "Messages"
because if you have WhatsApp on your iPhone and for some reason it's selected
as the default this may not be such a good idea.

I find all major recipe sites are pretty accessible. Usually what I do once I
find a recipe I want to keep I will use Jaws search and look for the word
"print". Most recipe sites allow you to print the recipe and once you click
that link or button, a new page opens where it is formatted for printing and
that usually means most other clutter is removed. I then do a Control + A on
the computer to select all and then I copy it with Control + C. I then open a
Notepad file and paste the text into Notepad, then I can review it and remove
any stuff I don't want and do a bit of formatting so all I am left with is the
title at the top, maybe prep and cook times and number of servings and then a
simple list of ingredients and cooking instructions.

As I said, I often save recipes this way and because the folder I save them
in is in my OneDrive, I can either take my wireless keyboard and headset to the
kitchen and stick te keyboard in a thin plastic bag to protect it from sticky
fingers or I can open the recipe in the OneDrive app and use my phone. Using
the keyboard is a bit easier I find because in the OneDrive app you often use
the place where you stopped if the phone locks, but it doe swork in a pinch.

Subject: RE: Recipe Management App & Accessible Kitchen Appliance Mailing Lists

As I said, I often save recipes this way and because the folder I save them in
is in my OneDrive, I can either take my wireless keyboard and headset to the
kitchen and stick te keyboard in a thin plastic bag to protect it from sticky
fingers or I can open the recipe in the OneDrive app and use my phone. Using
the keyboard is a bit easier I find because in the OneDrive app you often use
the place where you stopped if the phone locks, but it doe swork in a pinch.

I have an answer for you second part of your question. I'm also curious if
there are any mailing lists for blind or visually impaired individuals where
people share information about accessible kitchen appliances, as well as
recipes. See below

If you would like to join my “Recipe

RE: iPhone SE latest rumor

2025-02-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Obviously the iPhone SE will cost a lot less than a 16 Pro, it's designed to be
a budget phone and even if the price of the last SE which I think was $499,
goes up a bit, it will still be 50% or more cheaper than a 16 Pro.

What is your current phone?
As others already pointed out, the SE 4 will be larger than all SE phones so
far. LiDAR can be useful and without LiDAR you wouldn't be able to take
advantage of features like door detection and such which part of the Live
Recognition, not sure if certain channels in Seeing AI use LiDAR.
As for OCR and using Be My Eyes and Aira, I doubt the additional camers a Pro
phone has make that big of a difference.
The Meta glasses are pretty slick especially if you use Be My AI and such apps
a lot for recognizing items or want to go through mail. I find it very nice to
just hold a letter as if I was reading it and say "Hey Meta, read this to me"
instead of having to put it down on a table, then line up the phone with the
Seeing AI app open and raise it so it can see the letter and either read it to
me using the short text channel or take a picture for OCR using the Document
channel.
Same goes also when I am trying to find a particular can of a food item, just
not having to juggle the phone with one hand as I am holding stuff with the
other I find is a pretty big deal.
The other day I thought a small receit fell of my desk at work so I just put on
the glasses, rolled my chair back a bit and looked down. I asked "Hey Meta, is
there a piece of paper on the floor" and it came back instantly confirming
this, I asked "where is it" and it said "it's right in fron t of you which was
correct.
Getting help from an actual person with Be My Eyes or by calling a friend or
family member with WhatsApp is also extremely handy. Earlier this witer we had
a big dump of snow overnight (a good foot) and my still fairly new guide dog
got a little confused crossing an intersection because the snow ploughs had
piled up a big snow bank right where the crosswalk was. Later this was of
course dealt with, but at that time in the morning it was not and while she
pulled to the right and walked around it, she didn't quite find here way back
to the sidewalk because again I had to climb over a roughly two and a half foot
snowbank to get there and the sidewalk itself had not been cleared yet, either.
I called my brother on WhatsApp and after looking around for a bit he was able
to direct me so I got back on track. If I would have had to do this while
holding my dog with the left hand and the phone with the right it would have
been less convenient than just switching to the glasses camera and looking
around.

I heard a rumor today that the iPhone SE update will come out next week with no
press release.
Obviously just a rumor, but I have been holding on to my slowish iPhone SE
second generation so that I can have a full choice of latest phones.
Is there a blind users buyers guide to the iPhones to help decide if:
1. LIDAR add aa real advantage.
2. Do newer cameras improve OCR
3. Do newer camera help with Be My Eyes and AIRA?
4. Should I get a cheaper phone and spend the money saved on a pair of smart
glasses?

I know folks love their meta glasses, but I would rather pay a little more and
not have Meta capturing my life, but alternatives still appear to be in the
rumor stage.
Obviously, until the specifications of the SE are out no decision can be made.
My main complaints with my current phone is it takes about 5 seconds for a Siri
response and I don’t believe it is my network, and 40 minutes of walking
navigation takes about 60% of my battery life.
Warmly,
Jonathan

Over the past several months I have been having difficulty with the Amazon app.
When I search for a product, and the list of products comes up I can't navigate

things that Amazon is pushing. Is there some kind of setting I can change to
turn this off? I want to be able to go through the list of items without it
constantly reading the same product over and over, or seeming to jump back to
the top. Thanks.

I believe there are several thermostats that work with the Total

We have a Honeywell thermostat we got at least 9 years ago and the
app is completely accessible.
So, whomever you get the thermostat from, make sure it works with
the Total connect Comfort app, and there may be other
apps/thermostats but this is the one I know. The app will show up on
the phone as TCC. You can download the app and check it out. It
has a demo mode that makes it look like you are adjusting a real thermostat.

Our nest thermostat no longer sees wi-fi anything. the rest of the

is there something better that will talk to the phone and give us
complete control of temperature and scheduling?

Re: Stuck in app library

2025-02-10 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Since I started using the spotlight search, I almost never go into the App
Library anymore. On your home screens, right above the dock, is a control that
you can use to switch between pages by flicking up or down. If you double tap
on it, you end up in the spotlight search, and if you start typing, it'll start
pulling up matching apps. Once the app you want is on the top, you can just
hit the go button and it'll bring up the app. There might also be a VoiceOver
gesture that brings up the spotlight search.

You'll still need to go into the App Library to delete apps and move them to
your home pages.

RE: Recipe Management App & Accessible Kitchen Appliance Mailing Lists

2025-02-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Press Windows Key + R for the run dialogue and paste the following into the
edit field:

%windir%\explorer.exe shell:Appsfolder

Alternatively, you can go to your desktop, make sure nothing is selected by
pressing Control + Spacebar, then press Shift + F10, find "new, submenu" in the
menu, expand it and select "Shortcut".
Now paste the above line into the edit field and go to Next, give the shortcut
a name, I suggest "All Apps Folder".

Once you open said folder, you will find a list of all your programs and apps
on the computer, use first letter navigation to find Notepad, press Shift + F10
and select "Create Shortcut", you will get the following message:

Shortcut dialog
Windows can’t create a shortcut here.
Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?
Yes Button No Button

Obviously if you select Yes, a shortcut for Notepad will be placed on your
desktop. You can also pin Notepad to the Taskbar from the same context menu and
then use Windows Key + whatever position it is in on the taskbar as a keyboard
shortcut, e.g. if it's the fifth item on your taskbar, use Windows Key + 5 from
anywhere.

It seems like some people still experience this bug and hopefully they'll

Hello comma if you were on the Library screen, which in my case is page 9. At
the top of your screen, it should say page 9 of eight. And then you can flick

Swipe up from the bottom just like going back to your home screen, but you may
also have to follow that by touching the screen somewhere in the middle if it
bounces back.
What version of iOS are you on, I would definitely report this to Apple because
during the iOS 18 beta cycle this was quite bad for some people and while it's
better, I still get kicked into the App Library each time I reboot my phone,
but at least it's only the first time after I enter my PIN, once I get out and
back to the home screen it's usually OK.

Hi,

Open a mailbox and choose the More button near the top of the screen. Choose
List view. Then your messages will still have category labels, but they'll be
listed in the usual order.

Best,
Anna

Since I started using the spotlight search, I almost never go into the App
Library anymore. On your home screens, right above the dock, is a control that
you can use to switch between pages by flicking up or down. If you double tap
on it, you end up in the spotlight search, and if you start typing, it'll start
pulling up matching apps. Once the app you want is on the top, you can just
hit the go button and it'll bring up the app. There might also be a VoiceOver
gesture that brings up the spotlight search.

You'll still need to go into the App Library to delete apps and move them to
your home pages.
