Is there a simple, lightweight graphical editor that I can replace
gedit with and has more features to autosave and prevent losing data?

I don't need (want) the features of libreoffice or another more
advanced editor. Maybe even a graphical front-end to vim that's as
quick and lightweight?

I've been using GVIM for years.  You might want to try it out.

I thought so and I tried that too, but it won't remember the last state,
it always starts full screen. Pan does the same thing. It must be some
gnome3 setting.

I just did the following;
1. open google chrome.  It did so using full screen.
2. I positioned & sized it at a new location.
3. then exited via the exit option in the drop down menu.
4. restarted chrome and it came up in the position & size that I left it in.

In this case a scan produced a PNG image. This was converted to a PDF

This pretty much the same here, it just works.
However once I did see this behavior and it was traceable to incorrect
permissions on $HOME/.ssh
I never did figure out how they got changed from 700 but setting it back
fixed the situation.
Don't know if that applies here, but

F25 -> F26 printer problems

2017-08-11 Thread Wells, Roger K.

hello,

I use two printers, an HP4630 & Xerox 6655, both on networks.

They have been in use with no issues from F24 upgraded to F25. Now with
F25 upgraded to F26 there are some issues.

The machine is Thinkpad x260, running with Gnome desktop (3.24.2-1).

uname -a: Linux rwells-x260 4.11.11-300.fc26.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Jul 17
16:32:11 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The HP 4630 has been set up using the HP Device Manager which recognizes
it as expected.

No problem printing a test page from within HPDM
However within the "Printers" application available from Gnome "All
Settings" the 4630 "Printer Details" shows the printer address as
"localhost" (even though Cups shows the correct address) and any attempt
to print from an application, e.g. LibreOffite Writer fails. The job is
listed as "Stopped" and has to eventually be removed from the queue.
A side note: XSane has no problem using the scanner component of the
same device just as it did before the upgrades.

The Xerox 6655 printer appears with the correct IP address in the "All
Settings/Printers/Printer" dialog and any print job remains in the Job
list as "Stopped" just as in the case of the HP4630. However in this
case the job is sent to the printer. After it prints it must be
manually removed from the job list.

Anyone else seeing this?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The last time I saw that, it was because the session wasn't closed
(finalized). Are you using DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R or DVD+RW media?

Same here. Took me some time to revert. Could not imagine a kernel prob.

with 4.13, smb version 1 is deprecated, it now uses version 3 by
default.

Taken from https://lkml.org/lkml/2017/9/3/155

This time it's not really a kernel security issue, but a generic
protocol security issue.

The change in question is simply changing the default cifs behavior:
instead of defaulting to SMB 1.0 (which you really should not use:
just google for "stop using SMB1" or similar), the default cifs mount
now defaults to a rather more modern SMB 3.0.

Now, because you shouldn't have been using SMB1 anyway, this shouldn't
affect anybody. But guess what? It almost certainly does affect some
people, because they blithely continued using SMB1 without really
thinking about it.

And you certainly _can_ continue to use SMB1, but due to the default
change, now you need to be *aware* of it. You may need to add an
explicit "vers=1.0" to your mount options in /etc/fstab or similar if
you *really* want SMB1.

adding vers=1.0 to mount options is what you want to do.

yes, samba mounts still do not work.
I did google for "stop using SMB1" and only got Windows references.  How
does one adopt/upgrade to SMB 3.0?
The Bluetooth problems that motivated the original post are different,
not fixed.
Devices connect (sometimes) but erratically disconnect and reconnect
until the machine had to be restarted via the power switch.

I will keep at it and try to get something repeatable to report.
Back to 4.12.14 for now in order to be able to do some work.

Searching online, someone in the Linux Mint forum seems to have come
up with a way to make this work, simply replacing ".srcollbar" with
"*". I'd tested that briefly and it seems to work, but I don't know if
that would have any undesirable side-effects.

Anyone else with similar problems?
If you point me on how to get related log lines in journal in both working and
not working configurations, I can get more info.
Seen on several threads that with Xwayland and gnome-shell not so easy to see
startup log files...

[snip]

In the mean time I opened this bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1744905

I see at least two other new messages with problems related to external
monitors...

Unfortunately the problem still persisted across all kernel updates and also
with latest kernel installed today: kernel-5.2.15-200.fc30.x86_64
Currently I'm forced to use the latest 5.1 kernel that I downloaded and used
before updating to 5.2: kernel-5.1.20-300.fc30.x86_64
Verified also on 2 other external monitors with same effect. All 3 were Dell
Monitors, even if quite different models, I don't know if this can make any
difference
No feedback on bugzilla page yet and no other posters.. if anyone also has this
kind of problem is invited to post there so to get more attention
Of course this is with i915 kernel module and possibly other ones, like nouveau
and what used for Amd gpu, are working ok with external monitors and 5.2 kernels

Thanks,

Gianluca

I can't replicate your case exactly, but

The pc is a thinkpad x280
uname -r: 5.2.9-200.fc30.x86_64
video adapter is usb-c to vga and cable is vga to the monitor's vga input
external monitor is DELL P2214H, 1920x1080

$ loginctl show-session 2 -p Type
Type=wayland
$ echo $WAYLAND_DISPLAY
wayland-0

lspci | grep VGA
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics 620 (rev 07)

bootup is just what you want/expect, i.e. both monitors up and useable

I also have 5.2.8 & 5.2.5 kernels. Results are the same with them

I intend to get a usb-c to hdmi video adapter in the next day or two.
Let me know if it would be useful to repeat these using that.

FWIW, I've been using a ten year old Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000.
All of that time on Linux, most of the time on Fedora & RH.

A simple solution that worked for me with Thunderbird 68.1.1 on Fedora 30
(X86_64):

to ~/.bashrc add the line

export LC_TIME="C"

log out and back in and Thunderbird shows 24-hour format.

that worked here, just had to set time formatting back to regional in
preferences

How should I read "seconds since the Epoch"
Is the output of mktime correct?

time_str.tm_min = 59;

printf( "%d %d %d\n" , mktime(&time_str ) , mktime(&time_str2 ) ,
   mktime(&time_str ) - mktime(&time_str2 ) );

}

remember that the month values (tm_mon) go from 0 to 11.

change tm_mon for November to 10 and for December to 11 and you get the
expected result.
