Email Question - OT
Hi All; This is probably Off Topic, apologies... I recently kicked googlemail to the curb in favor of a service that does not read my emails (fastmail). We are very happy with fastmail. We are using our own domain which I was also doing with google. All of our clients can now email me at the same email address as before and I get the emails via fastmail, however we have one client that I do not receive the emails for. They can email me at other addresses but not the 'migrated' address. I'm not sure how to even start debugging this... Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be much appreciated Thanks in advance ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be much appreciated Thanks in advance This happened to me when I set up a mailinglist for a church group I belonged to. I ran a mail server I had in my home office that was hooked up to a cable service. Of the 50 people on the list, 20 could not send mail to the list -- even though they could receive mails. It turned out that all of them were using one cable vendor and were getting their internet connection through it. I tried calling them, but the technical support folk there said it was my problem and they were not interested in spending time trying to help me -- so I was on my own. I did a search on the problem at the time, and I wasn't the only person who ran into it. From my reading, it seemed that it was an issue of this particular ISP's internal security protocol that involved some sort of checking of ownership or something like that. The gist I got was that my domain resolved correctly, and the ICANN ownership info of the domain was correct, but the ownership of the some other component, like the IP address, was different, since it was tied to my ISP and not to me -- even though I was doing my own nameservice. Thus, I broke their spoofing rules. There was no solution that I could find, and none that worked for other folk who ran into it -- all of whom were running their own name and mail service from home. The workaround I ended up using was to change the Reply To: address for those users to a big-name server address (gmail as I remember) and then forwarded that to my server, which it would do. Note: 1) This was specific to one ISP (and the search turned it up only for that ISP) 2) It was back in 2008 3) I may not have characterized it correctly, since I didn't actually solve it. Sounds like the same behavior, Thanks billo ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org

Boot & Bios Issues
Hi All; I've managed to install Fedora 30 on a new LG Gram 17 laptop. I had to set acpi=off to get the live cd to boot, then I had to remove the acpi=off and rebuild the EFI grub file so the trackpad would work, subsequent boots without the acpi=off seem to work fine. I am seeing an odd situation when I shutdown & restart: 1) shutdown often takes a long time, I see that stop jobs are running either for packagekit or sometimes "flush journal to persistent storage" 2) sometimes booting up takes a long time , indicating a start job is running - flush journal to persistent storage 3) If I ever do a hard power off then it boots to what seems to be a windows boot manager, showing several options, like this: 1. ATA HDD1: HFS512G39TNF-N3A0A 2. ATA HDD2: CT1000MX500SSD4 3. Windows Boot Manager Then I need to power off again and change the following bios settings, they always get changed when I hard power off: Legacy OS Boot - (Gets set to Disabled, Fedora won't boot unless this is set to Enabled) RTC Wakeup from S4 - (Gets set to Enabled, Fedora won't boot unless this is set to Disabled) SW Guard Extensions (SGX) - (Gets set to Enabled, Fedora won't boot unless this is set to Disabled) Sometimes I need to go into secure boot configuration and choose "Delete All Signatures" If I do a dnf update and get a new kernel then the above process is triggered as well Other than struggling with booting a bit the laptop works great with Fedora. Anyone have any insight on how to fix the above issues? Useful for troubleshooting but it's a security risk. Once you get the hang, you can switch to tty9 and do # systemctl list-jobs And see which ones are hanging. And then # systemctl status I can't think of a reason off hand why flushing the journal would take a while if this is a default installation. What do you get for: # cat /etc/fstab # blkid The tty9 console will be available for a while during shutdown as well, and you can do the same list-jobs check, and also get status. There are ways to get more verbose journal logging, but they are super verbose. 3) If I ever do a hard power off then it boots to what seems to be a windows boot manager, showing several options, like this: 1. ATA HDD1: HFS512G39TNF-N3A0A 2. ATA HDD2: CT1000MX500SSD4 3. Windows Boot Manager Then I need to power off again and change the following bios settings, they always get changed when I hard power off: Legacy OS Boot - (Gets set to Disabled, Fedora won't boot unless this is set to Enabled) If this is enabled at the time Fedora is installed, you will get an installation (a bootloader) that depends on it always being. But it's a suboptimal arrangement. The laptop has UEFI firmware, and this legacy boot option when enabled activates something called a Compatibility Support Module which will present a faux-BIOS firmware to the bootloader and operating system. It's designed for supporting old, and thus legacy, operating systems. Fedora isn't a legacy OS. Short of unfixable or unworkaroundable UEFI bugs, it's better if this option is disabled and you reinstall, even if you have some new problems related to UEFI to work through. At least on one of my laptops with legacy mode, SSD drives run in IDE compatibility mode rather than as SATA devices, and everything is slower, but not as slow as what it sounds like you're experiencing. I also think it's a little weird that these firmware settings change when you hard reset. It makes me suspect firmware bugs, and that means there might be a firmware update that'll fix them. Confusingly the manufacturers often still call these BIOS updates, even though what they mean is firmware update. So I suggest checking for firmware updates with the manufacture. If you don't have Windows installed, hopefully they have a DOS based installer. Those come in two flavors, single image that includes DOS and the updater, and updater only. If updater only you can use FreeDOS. RTC Wakeup from S4 - (Gets set to Enabled, Fedora won't boot unless this is set to Disabled) SW Guard Extensions (SGX) - (Gets set to Enabled, Fedora won't boot unless this is set to Disabled) Sometimes I need to go into secure boot configuration and choose "Delete All Signatures" That's not expected. Secure Boot is disabled when Legacy OS is enabled. The two aren't compatible. If I do a dnf update and get a new kernel then the above process is triggered as well Other than struggling with booting a bit the laptop works great with Fedora. Anyone have any insight on how to fix the above issues? Can't fix it until the problem is understood. Right now it's a search for why it's happening. Thanks, I'll give the list-jobs bit a try. I'd do the debug shell bit, and then do: # systemctl list-jobs # systemctl status # journalctl -b -o short-monotonic # coredumpctl The monotonic time instead of wall clock time will make it easier to see delays. You can add '> journal.log' to output to a file and post it somewhere, maybe someone on the list will have interest in poking through it. The three ways to get more verbose logging are the following boot parameters: systemd.log_level=debug rd.udev.debug rd.debug I don't often use all three at the time time because each one makes boot slower and the journal much bigger, and there's that much more stuff to have to go through. On the other hand, if you have no idea what's going on, it can be tedious to use them separately. I almost always start with systemd debug first, and then udev debug (often omitting systemd debug). Maybe you've got a drive that's just not mounting very quickly and it's holding up the flush to journal, I'm not really sure what would cause that. Another possibility is something is crashing and the coredump being written to /var is soaking the available write bandwidth of the drive, the coredumpctl command will list captured crashes. So yeah you'll have to poke around. ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org

Fedora & VMware on a mac - using the cisco vpn connection of the host, is it possible?
Hi; I have a contract with a client and they have sent me a mac (ugh). I thought it would be ok since I mostly spend my time at the command line but the mac OS is driving me crazy. I hate this thing more with every passing day, it's like using a preschool toy to do real work. The mac interface is the worst pain I've had to endure in a long time. Literally the only good thing I can say about it is that it's not windows. Even simple tasks like getting it to use a second monitor with the laptop lid closed take way more time than it should and usually end in frustration and a t least one reboot. So... they will let me run VMware and I have installed Fedora 30 in a VM. However much of the content I need to access such as mail, internal company web pages, etc are all accessed via a cisco VPN and a usb key I use to log in. Is there any way for me to fire up my Fedora VM and have all of it's access just 'pass through' to the host, including using the cisco vpn? Re: Fedora & VMware on a mac - using the cisco vpn connection of the host, is it possible?
Or even better, is there an easy way to either: a) setup some sort of tunnel from my Fedora laptop and use it to run firefox, email, etc all going through the cicso vpn b) clone the mac in its entirety, even the security bits and run it as a local VMware workstation VM (via the mac unlocker), if I really must run a stupid OS then it would be better in a VM On 12/22/20 11:43 AM, S Bob wrote: Hi; I have a contract with a client and they have sent me a mac (ugh). I bought a 32GB memory stick and 2 2TB M.2 SSD drives as this laptop has the capacity for it In case anyone is interested: The laptop would not install from a DVD, so I used a usb memory stick and made it bootable with the Fedora Live iso: # dd if=/home/kevink/Downloads/ISO/Fedora-KDE-Live-x86_64-33-1.2.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=8M I had to go into the bios and change the following: - disable secure boot - make the usb memory stick the first boot device - disable the windows boot device (this is key, otherwise the laptop would not boot from anything but windows) At this point the laptop boots the Fedora install and the rest is standard ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam on the list, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure

I have a comcast router and an untangle firewall setup, all laptops are behind the firewall.
