Printing photo-quality on HP deskjet F4180

2010-05-24 Thread Colin Paul Adams
I don't know if this is a software issue, or if the printer is just
broken. (I'm using Fedora 12)

Basically, I can print fine using plain paper/normal quality. But If I
try to print photo quailty/photo paper, the image is overscaled (about
twice the size), displaced so that the centre prints around the left
edge, and only prints black - no colour.

I have hplib installed (by downloading from the hp site and following
the instructions - many weeks ago).

I have managed to print photo quality before (at least once). Does this
sound like a familiar problem to anyone?

I had that installed before, but then my wife wanted to scan documents,
and I was advised on the list to use the HP download. Scanning wouldn't
work before, and it did after i did that download.

Nevertheless, I will try it, and report back.

I only have Ilford Gallerie paper, so I can't experiment.

Can't see MacBook Air airport after kernel upgrade

2010-06-19 Thread Colin Paul Adams
Hello,

My MacBook Air, running Fedora 12 (only - no Mac OSX or anything else
present) was working fine last night. I hit the orange star to do an
upgrade.

Today, the system could not see an eth0 wireless device (the Airport).

I edited grub.conf to say default=1, so as to reboot the previous
kernel. Now all is working fine (so I'm not too concerned).

That previous (working) kernel is 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.x86_64.

The newer (not so good) kernel is 2.6.32.14-127.fc12.x86_64.

Do I need to open a bugzilla ticket for this? If so, are there any
special keywords/terms I should use to make sure it gets seen by the
tight people?

Thanks.

Hm. 10 seconds after I sent this message, I see there is another update

After nearly a year, it's stopped working. It was working fine at the

The latest one says device eth0 doesn't seem to be present.

The previous two say something about setting some code fails.

I suspect the previous yum update, but of course I can't do a new yum
update to try and fix it.
Surely the chip can't just have failed. It's all solid state isn't it?

Can't print to parallel port with Fedora 14

2011-02-05 Thread Colin Paul Adams
I have a laser printer which was working fine. Unfortunately the
computer to which it was attached (which was running Fedora 12) proved
to be sick.

So I've tried moving the printer to two other computers in turn (one
32-bit, one 64-bit) running Fedora 14. I cannot get it to work on either
of them.

I get the message:

lp: driver loaded but no devices found

I tried googling which suggested trying:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378,0x278 irq=7,auto

although this was rather an old message. I tried this and got:

Feb 5 16:14:17 susannah kernel: [ 582.886574] parport 0x378 (WARNING): CTR:

Now CUPS seems to think the pronter is online, but nothing prints anyway
(not surprising in the light of those messages above). (I only actually
have one parallel port, but I couldn;t remember which address
corresponds to lp0).

Any suggestions?

There is nothing technical in such correctness. That's official

Problems reading files after writing them to DVD

2011-04-14 Thread Colin Paul Adams
I've just tried archiving some of my photos to DVD. I used Brasero.

I tried this using two different DVD drives (the one built into my
desktop, and a USB device - both have worked fine before). I get the
same results with each.

After burning the drive and ejecting it, I re-mounted it. Now i can see
the files OK, but attempting to open one of the .NEF files with UFRAW
causes GNOME to give me a dailog box saying:

/media/Data disc (14 Apr 11)/2010-09-12/CPA_7583.NEF: Unsupported file
format.

There are also text files on the disc. Trying to read one of these, or a
.NEF file, in emacs shows all ^@s (which I believe means it's all binary
zeros). Note the files are of the correct size - i.e. identical to the
copied files (which I can read without problems).

This is on an up-to-date Fedora 14 system. Any ideas what might have
gone wrong?

Well, k3b seems to do slightly better than Brasero - it raises an error
when verifying track 0. Also, if I re-insert the DVD, it still comes up
as a blank one.

I tried k3b a second time, this time on the other drive. This time it
cancelled itself after receiving an error: cdrecord has no permission to

Where to find a binary for wl-kmod for current fedora 14 (64-bit)?

2011-04-15 Thread Colin Paul Adams
My macbook airport isn't working again after recent kernel updates.

I found the rpm for broadcom-wl.5.100.82.38-1.fc14.noarch.rpm, but when
I try to install it, it says it requires the wl-kmod as a dependncy.

Of course, i cannot do a yum install, as i have no network connection on
the laptop! So I have to download the binary, but I can't find it
anywhere (only source).

It turns out that the dependency name is wrong!.

Actually, what i needed was kmod-wl 5.100.82.38 and kmod-wl
2.6.35.12.88. This is REALLY weird (and plain unworkable, almost).

Anyway, my network is working again.

I manually found it. What I was doing was googling on my desktop
machine, copying the found rpm to a USB stick, plugging that into my
notebook, and trying the rpm command.
Yum update isn't an option with no working network.

Eric> it?  Also, did you report the bug?

I don't know that there's necessarily a bug involved. The problem is
that yum update will update the kernel, but as I had to use this
procedure to install the driver in the first place (no network, so i
cound't use yum - catch 22), yum might not be
looking for the broadcom driver in the first place.

Perhaps I could NOW try a yum install (with an option to force install
already installed packages), and that would future-proof me until next
time I install from scratch.

That's too late. Since it's a notebook, I re-boot it nearly every time I
want to use it. So when it re-boots, there will be no functioning
network in such a situation.

Can't install Fedora 14 on MacBook Air

2010-11-03 Thread Colin Paul Adams
The initial installation menu comes up ok. I select the default option
(install or upgrade). A lot of messages flash by (about two screens
worth), and then i see something like:

running /sbin/loader
check hardware
waiting for hardware

then it clears the screen, and the DVD drive runs for several minutes
before eventually stopping. I never see anything else except the blank
screen.

Any suggestions?

None of these worked, nor the suggestion of using acpi=off.

However the option of installing with basic video driver is working (no
graphical install). I'll see how it goes. I don't want to try the live
CD suggestion unless all else fails.

Thanks everyone for your help.

emacs not working on GNOME in fedora 14

This work-around works for me too. I guess I will have to put it in my

Where to set default root for wifi in Fedora 14?

2010-11-04 Thread Colin Paul Adams
My airport (wifi on Macbook Air) is working fine now fedora 14 is
installed (hooray!). But the default root is not enabled.

I can do so by typing as root:

route add default gw 192.168.254.254 eth0

but I don't understand why this is not done automatically by
NetworkManager.

So where can I configure this? I think /etc/sysconfig/network or
rc.local will be too early, as the device will not have started by
then.

Trouble with wireless connection

2010-12-19 Thread Colin Paul Adams
This only started happening a couple of days ago:

My wife's desktop, and my laptop, connect to our broadband modem via
wifi. We find that now (as opposed to earlier in the week), we cannot

My desktop and my webserver connect via an ethernet cable (static IP

Is this likely to be a hardware problem that has developed in the modem,
or might it be due to a recent software update?

I can find newer firmware (mine is a Thomson Speedtouch ST585 V6 running

But I can't find a way to install it. The user manual mentions ftp-ing
to the router, but when I try, most of the directories it mentions
aren't present. It's configured by Demon, and I suspect they customize
it.

I also found instructions for setting up a bootp server to do the
upgrade, but I couldn't get anything to happen. There was no request to
dhcpd from the router.

How do I set up DHCP in order to upgrade the software on my router?

2010-12-28 Thread Colin Paul Adams
I'm trying to upgrade the software on my broadband router. The closest
instructions I could find to doing it are here:

http://markferry.net/Network.SpeedtouchUpgrade

Those instructions are Debian/Ubuntu specific, but I figured I ought to
be able to adapt them. However I'm not having any luck.

What I've done is:

yum install tftp-server
yum install dhcp

I've updated /etc/xinetd.d/tftp to look like this:

# default: off
# description: The tftp server serves files using the trivial file transfer \
# protocol. The tftp protocol is often used to boot diskless \
# workstations, download configuration files to network-aware printers, \
# and to start the installation process for some operating systems.
service tftp
{
socket_type = dgram
protocol= udp
wait= yes
user= root
server  = /usr/sbin/in.tftpd
server_args = -s /var/lib/tftpboot
disable = no
per_source  = 11
cps = 100 2
flags   = IPv4

(i.e. all I changed was disable = no)

/var/lib/tftpboot contains the software file (ZZQIAA8.225.bli).

I edited

I start the dhcp service. Then I telnet to the router and issue the

Thanks.

That's better, in the now one BOOTREQUEST gets answered with one

But then NetworkManager resets the ethernet port, and we go round and
round (very slowly).

Eventually I had to reset the router.

I think i will have to buy a new one.

Tim> Where does NetworkManager usually get your address from?

No. It's a static IP-address and it's hard-coded in
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0

Tim> Try: service NetworkManager stop service network start

I did that.

Tim> Then manually bring up your ethernet and tell it what address

No need for that step (?), as network brings it up automatically.

But this just cuts out the noise from NetworkManager, I think. So now I
get the bare-bones of the loop in syslog:

Dec 29 08:44:30 susannah kernel: [251002.713374] e1000e :06:00.0: eth0:

which just repeats until I reset the router. I guess the router just
doesn't like what it's getting.

Can't ssh to machine after re0installing as F12

2010-01-19 Thread Colin Paul Adams
Hello,

today I upgraded (actually a fresh install, but I kept my old /home
partition) to Fedora 12.

Now I can't ssh to the machine (I use DSA public key authentication
only). I can't figure out why.

One clue is that if I open a shell, I get landed in /. I have to
specifically type cd to change to my home directory. I suspect that
somewhere the change of permissions h at install time did not work
properly, so maybe my .ssh directory is not being found.

Can't find scanner - HP Deskjet F4180

2010-01-21 Thread Colin Paul Adams
Hello,

I'm trying to use the Gnome scanner tool, but it can't find the device.

Googling shows that at least one person had no problems at all with this
printer/scanner.

Here is some command output:

bash-4.0$ sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

  # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you

  # necessary.
bash-4.0$ scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

What do I do now?

Sane conf file for HP Deskjet F4180?

2010-01-21 Thread Colin Paul Adams
(Still not getting emails from this list, so I'm reading the
archives. Jim, your message didn't really help, as it looks like it must
be HP-specific. Ubuntu users seem to have no problems, but I can't find

There doesn't seem to be an appropriate .conf file for the F4180 in
/etc/xsane.d, as far as I can tell.
Which one is supposed to be appropriate?

How to run preupgrade?

2011-11-09 Thread Colin Paul Adams
I have F14 installed on my Macbook Air, and I want to upgrade to F16.

So I read the installation manual, and quickly found chapter 20. I did:

yum install preupgrade

as instructed, and then:

preupgrade

as instructed.

Everything appeared to go well. At the end I pressed the button to
re-boot as instructed, but my F14 system just re-booted as normal. How
do I actually perform the upgrade from this point?

I've not tried re-booting again yet (I have to look up to find out how
to break out to the grub menu), but just looking, I can see that it is
the first entry in grub.conf, but NOT in menu.lst.

I do see the keyword "hiddenmenu" in both. I'll try removing that to see

Thanks. I can't find any log in /root dated 2011. But it certainly

The bug says a new preupgrade will be released shortly. I think I should
wait for that, although I don't know how to find out when it is
available (I added myself to the CC list, so that should do the trick, i
hope).

Presumably if I yum erase preupgrade, and then install and run it again
