Anyone else have occasional nvidia crashes?
I have a GeForce GTX 750 Ti in my system at work, using the rpmfusion nvidia drivers (because nouveau can't go more than a few hours without crashing). Every so often, when the X server starts or is restarted by logging out, the screen will go blank and the system will be frozen, needing a power cycle to get it back. This only happens at work, a very similar system at home with a newer model nvidia card never has this problem (though it certainly had the same crashes under nouveau). Just curious if anyone else with the 750 Ti has seen similar symptoms. ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org

My new ThinkPad P72 came with an RST chip set up with two 2TB PCIe M.2 SSDs in a RAID1 config. The Fedora-29-MATE-Compiz spin DVD doesn't "see" it. Nor does Clonezilla. I've only seen this with a small flash drive and a large spinning drive. In the few cases I've run into this, I've turned off the RST to be able to install. There's a BIOS mode setting for the Intel RST: "RST" mode for RAID, and "AHCI" mode for separate SATA drives. Changing that setting to AHCI will probably break the RAID1 array and render the P72 unbootable. I don't know if that would a destructive, irreversible change, or if changing the mode setting back to RST would restore everything. At least in the ones I've worked with, turning RST off in the BIOS does not corrupt anything. Once that happens, then log entries will be accurate from that point onwards and chronyd will do its best to keep the system clock synced to UTC. Keep in mind that journalctl will assume ALL log entries have a UTC timestamp, regardless of when the clocks got mangled and this is the cause of the time shifts in the display. The radical change in system clock when it switches from local time to UTC time MAY cause programs to malfunction, since they assume that the system clock was in UTC. This _may_ be why your VPN was disconnecting...it assumed there was no traffic for whatever the difference is between your local time and UTC, so it disconnects. I can understand the time sync causing a problem with the VPN, but the question I have is why now? Its probably 12 months since the last time I ran the VPN, so it would have been in F27 and earlier where the VPN was actively being used and there were no issues with the bios clock being set to local time, which is how I've been running the bios time settings for over 30 years, except for once when I did try it set to GMT and Windows couldn't handle it, but also having said that I haven't been running Linux for that long, I've only been running it at home for 10 or so years and I have always at least dual booted. Could my issue be that this time shift issue has always been present but its only now that it is becoming obvious? It's possible. It's also possible that the VPN client (vpnc, whatever) uses a different default timeout setting now. The old one worked OK, the new one requires you override it in the config. It also may be that the VPN server has been updated and doesn't like something. As I said, this clock thing _may_ explain the VPN dropout. I just don't know. The only way to know is if the reason generates log entries (and we hope it does). In that case, you may need to look at ALL of the log entries. If the dropout occurs somewhere near when the timestamps get funky, that's a good indication that the clock changes are causing it. Just why should be revealed in the log entries. I'm just spitballing this. The cause may be totally unrelated. As always, troubleshooting sporadic things of this nature remotely (even locally) is difficult--especially when you can only look at one end of the connection (VPN server logs, if available, would be useful). I suspect the time shift isn't an issue, as I'm starting the vpn's from within KDE where I thought the time shift has already taken place, plus journalctl seems to be indicating that the time shift has taken place before chronyd has started. The vpn I'm using, which operates through Openvpn, has servers all over the world, and you configure it for the one you want to use. I've tried the one closest to Australia that gives the best performance (being Singapore) and the one they recommend (being Miami) and they both behave the same way. The vpn is started, NetworkManager indicates the vpn is "active" (by placing a lock icon on top of the network icon in the system tray), it stays in that state for about 30 seconds according to journalctl and then it logs a terminate message, and it takes about a further 30 seconds for the vpn to actually shutdown. I've changed a couple of parameters in the config, so I'll see whether they have any impact, but at the moment I'm using Linux fairly infrequently. regards, Steve -- - Rick Stevens, Systems Engineer, AllDigitalri...@alldigital.com - - AIM/Skype: therps2ICQ: 226437340 Yahoo: origrps2 - -- - Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the - - reader...who doesn't get it. - -- ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedo

I also think a lot of it is laziness in supporting multiple displays. The problem I see is at this point the symbols are getting far too abstract for many people and there seems to be no steering group that accepts comments or complaints. After all, an icon's purpose is to obviate textual explanations. Obscure icons defeat that intent. Perhaps it's just better to harass the developers. The problem is they've gotten very good at ignoring user comments. I remember the old, symbolic UK "Road Work" signs. Some (such as myself) saw them as stick figures with shovels. Some saw them as stick figures fighting with cranky umbrellas (those in the UK know what I mean). From context, it was always clear that they were shovels. I mean, why on Earth would you need a sign next to the M5 to warn people about bad umbrellas anyway? But I'm an engineer, so I suppose I don't think like most people. :-p While I'm not a fan of bureaucracy in any form, it might be time for ANSI or ISC to create a committee to address UI issues such as this. -- - Rick Stevens, Systems Engineer, AllDigitalri...@alldigital.com - - AIM/Skype: therps2ICQ: 226437340 Yahoo: origrps2 - -- -Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.- -- ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org

Would you know if that works and if there is any doc/manual for it? many thanks, L. ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org

persistant soundcard image on desktop. Fedora 29
Intermittently an image, approximately 1.5"x1.5" appears in the center of the desktop, covering whatever application is running. The image contains a "sketch" of (presumably) a sound card and a label "Built In analog digital stereo ( IEC958)". Sometimes the image stays on the screen for extended periods of time, and sometimes it seems to appear and then disappear. (It of course stays there for a long time when I am trying to see what is under it in the application.) Took me about 20 minutes to find it when I first wanted to print something in new evince. Try okular. Comes with some KDE baggage, and the startup is a bit slower, but it beats the pants off evince, IMO. It actually opens PDFs at a reasonable magnification level. It feels like a real desktop application, instead of something bolted on top of libX11. PgUp and PgDn keys actually work intuitively. The search function does not actually begin at some random part of the document. I used evince for many years, before finally giving up fighting with its navigation and idiosynchronies. Based on this thread, it looks like I don't really have any need to take another look at it. pgpFh6fxmoJKo.pgp Description: PGP signature ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://getfedora.org/code-of-conduct.html List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org
