Amongst other options, the one I just described...

If you do have a "Show Status Bar" item in the list, try un-ticking and
re-ticking it.

Another thing that springs to mind:  Have you resized the window, and
pushed the bottom half of it off the screen, or behind other parts of
the GUI?
