Fedora 24: LibreOffice Quickstartet

2016-08-16 Thread Tibor Attila Anca
Hi,

I really miss this quickstarter of LibreOffice in Fedora 24 (otherwise
an excellent distribution). Is there any possibility to get it besides
that of installing the packages from the website of LibreOffice? With
Fedora 23 I experienced some issues with this method (menu freezing,
menu disappearing, writer ignoring save format, etc.), I wouldn't try it
again.

Google search didn't bring much so far.

Thanks in advance,

i'm following up on an earlier post of mine, still looking for
advice. someone earlier suggested googling for "M.2 PCI-E adapter",
but this is a laptop, not a desktop, so i have no idea what the value
of an adapter would be.

decent pics are in this article:

http://edgeup.asus.com/2016/01/19/rogs-g752-gaming-laptop-allows-easy-memory-and-storage-upgrades/

where the 4th pic down shows the two SSD slots clearly marked "PCIE
ONLY". that article states:

"As the silk-screened label indicates, M.2 compatibility is limited to
PCI Express SSDs. PCIe drives come in one of two flavors—AHCI or NVM
Express—and the G752 works with both of them. However, it doesn’t
support M.2 drives based on the Serial ATA standard. Those drives are
too slow to take advantage of the copious bandwidth on tap, so there’s
little point to running them in a laptop like this."

the SSD i tried is described here:

http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/950pro.html

and the "specifications" tab reads:

  INTERFACE
  PCIe 3.0 x4 (up to 32 Gb/s) NVMe 1.1

so it sure seems like i should be able to use that SSD. but, as you
can read above, my first attempt did not end well.

am i missing something? is support for that device built into the
stock fedora kernel as it comes from red hat? (i just assumed it was,
perhaps i was being optimistic. would this need standard pci-e
support?)

is anyone else using this setup? with what SSD drive? and did it
just work out of the box? i'm open to suggestions.

  more in a bit ...

a little more digging, and i ran across this:

https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?79590-Issue-with-M-2-SSD-in-ASUS-ROG-GL752VW

"What SSD are you using? I know that there is an incompatibility

g ... so the very SSD i purchase turns out to be
incompatible. drat. however, apparently, there are a couple others
that will work:

http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SM951-512GB-AHCI-MZHPV512HDGL-0/dp/B00VELDBJ6

so, maybe i'll take a chance.

Mentioning it here is unlikely to get results, as this is the user
list. The best way to accomplish this, if it is possible, is to go to
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/
and open a ticket against libreoffice asking that this quickstarter be
included. It's an RFE (request for enhancement). There is no
guarantee that it will happen, unless of course you volunteer to take
the task upon yourself to ensure it happens, but it is more likely when
you make an official request like this.

Samsung Gs3 and F24/Xfce

2016-08-16 Thread Robert Moskowitz

I worked this out with F21 back in '14 and it worked just fine with F22.

I had to add gvfs-mtp to get the Gs3 to mount back then. I added it and
still not getting the Gs3 to mount. I get the mounting of the Verizon
CD that would load the Windoz drivers, but then it just goes away and
the Samsung mount point does not replace it.

Do I have to reboot after installing gvfs-mtp?

One thing of note in that my system is claiming that I have a AudioCD
waiting to be mounted. I DID yesterday play and audio CD, but I
unmounted it and disconnected the USB CD/DVD drive.

Ideas?

Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in, but I don't
think there is a way. dnf knows when removing a package leaves behind
what it calls leaves, packages that have nothing depending on them, but
I don't think it keeps track of installation method beyond repository
of origin.

If it is a single package, you could try a dnf remove to see what it
wants to remove for dependencies. Those packages would have installed
the package you want to remove if it wasn't already installed (pulled
it in as a dependency).

Packages that have a *lot* of dependencies when you try to remove them,
were probably installed as part of the base installation.

From dnf(1):

dnf history userinstalled
List names of all packages installed by a user. The
output can be used as the %packages section in a kickstart file.

However it's far from clear what that actually means as there is no
other information about it.

I think that is the packages that show up as commandline in installed.
That is, packages that were installed locally from an rpm using the -C
option. When I've installed Fedora packages from the Fedora
repository in the past, they show up in dnf as Fedora, not commandline.

But I could be wrong, I'm still finding my way around dnf.

That would make sense except that it also seems to list kernels for
some reason (I can't recall ever doing "dnf install kernel"), so who

I know only what you've written about gvfs-mtp. But my question would
be does lsmod show it? If it doesn't, you will have to load the kernel

Did you umount it manually? Maybe you bypassed the logic of the
application or system program telling you it is waiting to be mounted.
So it still thinks it is waiting, though it is long gone.

I manually umounted it in Thunar. Then after it showed unmounted there,
I pulled the drive. Only to find it still showing on my desktop.

I am now using the USB DVD/CD drive to copy a data DVD and it is going
fine and shows on the desktop, along with that AudioCD icon. Probably
will take at least a logout to clear it up.

lsmod|grep gvfs

# modprobe gvfs-mtp
modprobe: FATAL: Module gvfs-mtp not found in directory

I have gvfs-mtp installed and get the same results. In fact, I have
my phone mounted and am browsing the SD card and still get the same
results.

Still not working. Looks like I am going to have to reboot.

They may be FUSE, file systems in user space
and thus not in the kernel.

Before you do that, or if it doesn't work, try going into the Settings
for Storage on your phone and changing your USB connection from Charge
Only to MTB, or Media Device. Be warned that this will prevent it from
charging by USB until you change it back if that matters.
