Having to wait for yum to download the repos metadata when using 'yum info'
or 'yum provides' is just too irritating, especially if you have a slow
internet connection and less than 3-4 hours ago you had to wait for the
metadata to be downloaded... I set metadata_expire=1d in /etc/yum.conf for
that particular reason.

With yum there's metadata_expire_filter which you gives you finer control
of when the metadata is udpated, but honestly I found it too complicated to
understand and opted for setting metadata_expire=1d; FWIW I've not had to
change that value, i.e I don't see any discrepancies when using yum.

I haven' t the slightest idea, but I don' t see how people can help if
you give no information about the machines that fail, nor which
version of the kernel this is, not how it was compiled, nor what boot
options you tried.

The process started on the sourceforge site, but as I had stated. It just
stops.

http://sourceforge.net/p/g4l/discussion/408762/thread/dd4ae6ef

My Project includes a number of kernels (8) from 3.0.101 thru 3.13.6 the
default, and 3.14-rc6. Have tried booting from CDs and usb. Using version of
Syslinux 4.06, 5.10, and 6.02/3. Have tried with failsafe options. Have tried
Debug option, nosmp, etc. Have tried it without a disk installed, and it still
freezes. Placed the disk in a different system, and it loads fine, and make the
image.

Strangely, the machine does boot with an Pmagic linux disk, but it is an i486
version, and doesn't include the nic.

Was mainly looking to see if someone had some experience with this
machine, and might have figured out a setting or option.

Generally have about 1000 downloads per week of the project, and usually
have very few issues, and generally, can quickly come up with a solution, but
this one is not going well.

User is a Windows person, so it is even more of an issue, and have sent an
request to the vendor, but expect will get a response that machine is only
listed as Windows 7 or 8...

Thanks fro the Time.

BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! after recent update of Fedora 20

2014-03-14 Thread The Walters
After a recent update started seeing messages like what is listed below
and now complete lock up. Tried going back 1 or 2 kernels but same
issue. Wondering if this is a hardware problem? The system is a Dell
poweredge SC420 with an Intel P4 2.8 GHz processor. No special additions
to it.

If you haven't already, activate the Magic Sysrq key and make sure that
it works. If nothing else, it can help you get an orderly reboot,
instead of needing to power-cycle. Be warned, though, that when my old
mobo had trouble, the combos would work during testing, but never when I
needed them. Still, that helped me work out that the mobo was the problem.

So I gave your suggestion a try last night and no joy. Installed
kmod and akmods for nvidia, it pulled in the requisite x nvidia
packages, and it just wouldn't run at all. When I looked to see
what was up I realized that the nvidia module hadn't
loaded...strange, thought I! So I tried to manually load it with
modprobe and received the error "Error: could not insert 'nvidia'
:Exec format error". Bummer. So then I downloaded the nvidia
package from nvidia directly and, no joy, won't compile (I did do a
little looking around and saw some information about patches that
needed to be applied to get nvidia to build on 3.13+ kernels and
tried those patches but the build failed in other places). So I had
to fall back to nouveau. Bleah! Ah well, at least I've got a
functioning (albeit not accelerated) system!

I'm running latest updated rawhide (3.14.0-0.rc4.git0.1).

Not to burst your bubble, but this list deals with F19 and F20, not
rawhide. For rawhide stuff, you need to start posting to the developers
list. It is entirely possible that the kernel module you have is NOT
compatible with a rawhide kernel since the rawhide kernel isn't released
yet.

Also note that you should use either kmod-nvidia or akmod-nvidia, not
both. I use kmod-nvidia for my G86 (Quadro NVS 290) Tesla card. I
specifically use the kmod-nvidia- module.

As far as loading the module, you should back up your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and replace it with something like:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

and let X load the module when X starts up.

I've been using both for several years now with no problems. If the
kmod is ready when the kernel is, I get it, and the reboot is quick; if
not, the reboot takes a little longer as the akmod does its job, and the
kmod updates when it's ready. No problems.

 Hello,

Rawhide? As far as I know I have F20 installed. Perhaps something went
wrong when I upgraded from F19 to F20?

Screen Brightness Keys Not Working - Thinkpad W540 & Fedora 20

2014-03-14 Thread CS DBA

Hi All;

Just setup a Thinkpad W540, most everything is working well. I did not
install any nvidia drivers (kmod-nvidia, nvidia downloaded binaries,
etc) just using the default driver - not sure if this has anything to do
with it but Fn-F5 / Fn-F6 dont do anything...

Thanks in advance

Re: How do I select which monitor kdm will display login on?

Allegedly, on or about 13 March 2014, Ian Chapman sent:

I was having similar issues with GDM, where it would set up the order

when I logged in.

*Your* settings are loaded when you log in, they're specific to you, and
stored in your ~/.config/monitors.xml

GDM runs as the gdm user, and it can have its monitor configuration
settings set in /var/lib/gdm/.config/monitors.xml (gdm's home space
is /var/lib/gdm).

Yes, I realise that the user can have different settings to the display
manager. However, here's the interesting thing. From a VT if I login and do:

init 3
systemctl disable lightdm.service
systemctl enable gdm.service
init 5

GDM starts, but the logical order of the monitors is wrong. The login
dialog opens on the right monitor, but I have to move the mouse off the
right edge to go to the left monitor.

Then without changing any X config

init 3
systemctl enable lightdm.service
systemctl disable gdm.service
init 5

LightDM starts, and the logical order of the monitors is correct. I move
the mouse off the left edge to move to the left monitor.

If I delete my personal monitors.xml file, then when I login I inherit
whatever order GDM or LightDM uses.

So at the very least, it tells me that GDM and LightDM do not use the
same mechanism for deciding the ordering of monitors.

Slow wireless speeds - Fedora 20 - Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260A

Hi All;

I have Fedora 20 running on a Thinkpad W540, the wireless works out of

Can anyone help me debug this or point me to the right package(s) to
install?

Thanks in advance

Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! after recent update of Fedora 20

2014-03-14 Thread D. Hugh Redelmeier
| From: The Walters

| After a recent update started seeing messages like what is listed below and
| now complete lock up. Tried going back 1 or 2 kernels but same issue.

I can't help you with the specific problem.

It is always good to google an error message. Have you? I'm not going
to try -- I'll leave that to you.

It would be a good idea to mention the actual kernel versions you've
tried.

Red Hat's bugzilla is a useful place to report errors. I always like
to be a little confident before I report them. So asking on the list
may be a good idea.

| Wondering if this is a hardware problem?

Why? Because old kernels show the same problem yet you only noticed
it recently? That's a good thought. But Fedora kernels come out
frequently -- check the age of the oldest one you've tried.

Whenever I wonder about a hardware error, with non-specific symptoms,
I start memtest86 going overnight. That makes me more confident about
the RAM at least.

Consider trying a really old kernel as another test.

Good luck!
