[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 483832] Re: AMD64x2, Nvidia, Gnome and KDE, no virtual ttys, and shell in konsole or gnome terminal dies

2009-11-16 Thread WeatherGod
tiger99, thank you for your bug report. We are very anxious to
understand this problem. When did this behavior start? Could it have
started after a particular update? Also, are you using compiz window
effects? If so, would turning compiz off stop or reduce the frequency
of this issue?

tiger99, thanks for the investigative work. It just so happens that
someone else with similar trouble was also using the same version of the

should at least give use a spot to look at to figure out what went
wrong.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484875] Re: Nvidia GPU overheating on Toshiba P100

2009-11-23 Thread WeatherGod
JP, before switching over to the free/open drivers, I would like to forward
this bug report to the nvidia people. They would like to have a particular log
file included in the bug report that can be generated by running: sudo
nvidia-bug-report.sh
It will produce a file called nvidia-bug-report.log in your current working
directory. If you can upload that log file to this bug report, I can then push
this report up to nvidia.

After that, feel free to test out the open/free drivers that are
available.

2009-12-13 Thread WeatherGod
Jonas, I have just noticed something odd. You say that you upgraded to
Karmic (9.10), but your log files say that you are using the Jaunty
(9.04) kernel.

Double-check your /boot/grub/menu.lst file. If you are using Karmic
(9.10), your kernel version should be 2.6.31. If you don't see that
entry in your menu.lst file, make a backup of it, and then run 'sudo
update-grub' to rebuild that file. Then boot into the 2.6.31 kernel and
see if your touchpad works.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2009-12-13 Thread WeatherGod
Moving this over to tthe video driver package. Possibly a conflict with
Compiz?

** Description changed:

- This is my problem -- I can't boot in Gnome proper -- must use failsafe
- .. Just did an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04 ... upgrade went ok..
- then within 30 seconds in Gnome.. it freezes... freezes to the point
- where I can't even move the mouse, type anything.. must do hard reboot.
+ Due to the large number of other people posting to this bug report, the
+ information provided by the original reporter "The Founder" has been
+ summarized below for ease of reading.

- Now Gnome failsafe works fine, I installed KDE to see if that works..
- no problem...  just Gnome.
+ === Description ===
+ Ubuntu 9.10

- I can't even see what the problem is because the computer locks up to
- the point where a hard reboot is needed.
+ On boot, the computer reaches the login screen and allows you to enter
+ your username and password. Then within 1-15 seconds after you see the
+ desktop the machine freezes.

+ "freezes" by definition means the machine is completely 100% non-
+ responsive. The mouse will not move. The keyboard will not respond.
+
+ After a hard shut down (IE: unplug the machine from the UPS) you can
+ reach the login screen again after a reboot, at this point if you select
+ fail-safe the machine runs as expected... but only in fail-safe move.
+
+ KDE and X run fine. This bug is specific to Gnome Standard.
+
+ === Hardware ===
  It's a Compaq Presario - Celeron D
  Intel 950 Video Card
  1.5 GB ram

- I cannot provide you with any more information regarding it because
- honestly the computer locks up to the point where I can't reach terminal
- or click on anything to find out what is wrong.
-
- Now I am not a big fan of having to use Gnome Failsafe... I can
- provide you any information you need when the computer is in Gnome
- failsafe.. but I cannot report squat when it locks up in Gnome
-
- Worth Nothing, this machine ran Ubuntu 9.04 without fail or errors...

+ Another user with similar hardware and freeze has reported that it is the

+ === Possible Cause ===
+ Possibly a conflict with Compiz and Intel video drivers?

  Touchpad was working with ubuntu 9.04 but stopped working when I
  installed 9.10
+
+ === Diagnosis ===
+ Run 'uname -a' and determine if the kernel version matches with the current
OS (2.6.31 for Karmic). If the kernel version is incorrect, then the problem
is likely caused by driver incompatibilities.
+
+ === Fix ===
+ Modifying the /boot/grub/menu.lst file to include the correct kernel entry to
boot into is necessary. Usually, 'sudo update-grub' should be sufficient.
Then reboot the computer.

Jonas, there might be a duplicate bug report that would be relevant to
your situation. Did you happen to manually edit the menu.lst file while
you were using Jaunty?

+
+
+ Due to the large number of other people posting to this bug report, the
information provided by the original reporter "The Founder" has been summarized
below for ease of reading.

  === Description ===
  Ubuntu 9.10

  On boot, the computer reaches the login screen and allows you to enter
  your username and password. Then within 1-15 seconds after you see the
  desktop the machine freezes.

  "freezes" by definition means the machine is completely 100% non-
  responsive. The mouse will not move. The keyboard will not respond.

  After a hard shut down (IE: unplug the machine from the UPS) you can
  reach the login screen again after a reboot, at this point if you select
  fail-safe the machine runs as expected... but only in fail-safe move.

  KDE and X run fine. This bug is specific to Gnome Standard.

  === Hardware ===
  It's a Compaq Presario - Celeron D
  Intel 950 Video Card
  1.5 GB ram

  === Automated Info ===

  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-14.48-generic
  SourcePackage: yelp
  Uname: Linux 2.6.31-14-generic i686

  === Possible Workaround ===
  Another user with similar hardware and freeze has reported that it is the
latest driver that is causing the issue, and has rolled back to a previous
version with success.

  === Possible Cause ===
  Possibly a conflict with Compiz and Intel video drivers?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 492271] Re: ubuntu 9.10 totally freezes when compiz is enabled

2010-01-13 Thread WeatherGod
As a general rule, it is a good idea to file separate bugs for different
hardwares. Even better would be to mention in the description for the
new bug report the possible similarity to an existing bug report.

In this case, I think we are ok, as you are both using the same onboard
intel graphics controlers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2010-03-11 Thread WeatherGod
TM Hart,

I quite agree. I am sure that this bug turned away many new linux users
who had certain models of Intel video cards. Unfortunately, there is
not much that can be done with respect to the downloadable ISO (which is
why it is so important to test the ISOs extensively before the final
release).

In the meantime, if you could contribute information at this page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Lucidi945Freezes that would be greatly
appreciated.

2010-03-25 Thread WeatherGod
TM Hart, so you are confirming that the bug exists for Jaunty and Karmic
when you turn compiz on. Could you please check to see if the problem
also still occurs for Lucid Lynx beta? You can find the iso at

Thank you for your help in this matter.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2010-03-25 Thread WeatherGod
TM Hart, just to clarify, it is impossible for the settings on the
harddrive install of Ubuntu to be effecting the LiveCD version of
Ubuntu. From how I read your observations, the LiveCD session freezes
whenever you set the visual effects to Normal. The same is also true
from the installed version. Am I missing anything?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2010-03-25 Thread WeatherGod
Roger, agreed. Besides, this is probably most likely a graphics driver
issue with regards to some of the work that is being done in the Linux
kernel (the modesetting and such). It is quite likely that it will take
the newer kernels to really address this issue anyway.

Plus, it still leaves open the possibility for backporting the fix to
Karmic and/or Jaunty.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484875] Re: Nvidia GPU overheating on Toshiba P100

2010-05-30 Thread WeatherGod
** Also affects: acpi (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: acpi (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

** Description changed:

- Toshiba Satellite P100 PSP-A3C laptop, Nvidia GeForce Go 7600, running
- Karmic 2.6.31-15, Nvidia proprietary driver 185.
+ *** Problem *
+ Toshiba Satellite P100 PSP-A3C laptop, Nvidia GeForce Go 7600, running Karmic
2.6.31-15, Nvidia proprietary driver 185.

  GNOME-Sensors applet reports CPU stable at about 60 C, GPU climbs slowly
  up to about 90 C, then the system shuts down.

  On 9.04, I had the same problem, but I was able to load a custom DSDT,
  after which the fan ran properly, and the system stayed cool, GPU around
  65 C. Also stays cool under Windows XP.

  I understand that it is not possible to load a custom DSDT under karmic,
  so I need another solution.
+
+  Possible Fix **
+ After some more hacking in DSDT, Yann found that fan control is located in
ACPI EC (embedded controller) address space : VTMP acpi byte in acpi EC bit
field, at offest 0x5E.
+
+ Yann found some similar concerns on some acer laptops (having the same
+ WMI related acpi methods, located in device AMW0), and with a perl
+ script that Yann was able to modify in order to setup a constant fan
+ speed. That perl script is attached to this report.
