Hallo Carla well, I suggest to give a try to the latest propretary nvidia drivers and see how the kernel works with them. Then we will be able to understand if it is a linux or nouveau problem. So go on in this way, remove the three packages of the kernel 4.2.0-996 via synaptic (searching for linux they will be listed), once done reboot in the stock kernel. Install the propretary drivers via software & updates or if you are familiar follow this guide to install the lastests released by nvidia: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual. Remember to backup important things Marking as affecting nouveau as I cannot see anything related to compiz in my system so it is likely something hardware related. When using LiveBoot on ubuntu-15.04-desktop-amd64.iso usb-touchscreen working 99% time I insert it. On LiveBoot on ubuntu-15.04-desktop-amd64.iso this usb-touchscreen worked 99% times then was be inserted. But on the system installed by this iso and without updates (and with updates) - it is work only 1% of the time when I insert it. On installed system in Xorg.0.log when usb-touchscreen NOT working and when I DISCONNECT usb-touchscreen I get the string "(EE) [dix] Huitoo KIT HuiToo Computer INC.: unable to find touch point 0" WITHOUT timestamp. Installation finished with no errors or warnings $ sudo reboot After Gnome loading screen (before log in) boot stops with following messages in intermitten screen followed by "[OK]" at the end of each line: * Starting atieventsd [OK] saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned * Starting network connection manager * Restoring resolver state * Starting crash report submission daemon * Stopping System V runlevel compatibility After reboot, same info displayed plus: * Stopping cold plug devices * Stopping log initial device creation * Starting save vdev log and update rules * Stopping save vdev log and update rules After new reboot this long message: * Starting automatic crash report generation * Starting ACPI daemon * Starting configure virtual network devices * Stopping restore sound card state * Stopping anac(h)ronistic cron * Starting cups-browsed -- Bonjour remote printer *illegible in my notes* daemon * Stopping save kernel messages * Starting regular background program processing daemon * speech-dispatcher disabled; edit /etc/default/speech-dispatcher * Starting network connection manager * Starting atieventsd saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned * Restoring resolver state After fourth reboot the first message repeated I managed to boot into text mode editing grub's ubuntu entry and attempted: $ sudo apt-get remove fglrx-updates . . apt-get will INSTALL fglrx-core . . Verified on 201401-14542 Dell Inspiron 5547 With 14.04.1 stock image installed, the fglrx package is now 2:15.200-0ubuntu0.5 And it works with suspend.
