Hallo Carla well, I suggest to give a try to the latest propretary nvidia drivers and see how the kernel works with them. Then we will be able to understand if it is a linux or nouveau problem. So go on in this way, remove the three packages of the kernel 4.2.0-996 via synaptic (searching for linux they will be listed), once done reboot in the stock kernel. Install the propretary drivers via software & updates or if you are familiar follow this guide to install the lastests released by nvidia: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaManual. Remember to backup important things .... Marking as affecting nouveau as I cannot see anything related to compiz in my system so it is likely something hardware related.
