I can confirm this bug also on my card: Ati Mobility radeon HD 4500, RV710 I always had overheating problems with the opensource driver, so I used the binary driver from ATI. Actually with the latest updates the ati-closed-driver doesn't work anymore also on ubuntu 12.04 So the only solution is to install the old LTS from Ubuntu or debian stable. I can provide additional information about my hardware and my issue. This bug was around from a lot of time right now and is potentially harmful about the hardware. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1153976] [NEW] Low CRT refresh rate selected when higher is available
Public bug reported: My CRT monitor - ADI Systems 16" - is correctly recognized and the list of supported resolutions in System Settings > Displays looks good (not all resolutions are listed, but the one's I'm interested in are). At higher resolutions the monitor only supports low refresh rate, so I select a highest resolution where 85Hz rate is supported, but the actual mode set is that resoltion at 60Hz. Here is the xrandr output: $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 1536, maximum 8192 x 8192 LVDS1 connected 1366x768+0+768 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 194mm ... I can switch to this mode manually with this command: $ xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1280x768 after which the corresponding line of xrandr output changes to: 1280x768 84.8*74.9 59.9 as well as the monitor itself reports that it has switched to 85Hz, and I didn't even explicitly asked xrandr for it. That should have happened automatically. I've been away from desktop linux for couple of years and am not sure anymore what is the actual package resposible for this and what other information is useful for developers, but if pointed to the right direction will supply whatever you need. ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1153976 Title: Low CRT refresh rate selected when higher is available To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1153976/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I am opening here in hope for possible feedback from devs. Please note that the bug potentially was fixed in the development versions (see below). Short summary: In inkscape, simply clicking on the workspace will crash Xorg, and throw the user back to login screen. For a detailed error message, please refer to the launchpad bug. This bug seems to be related to disabled touchpads - all affected users used laptops. Enabling the previously disabled touchpad will prevent the crash. For some users, disabling the touchpad via software would not cause the crash, while for others there was no difference. Due to this correlation with input hardware, a bug in inkscape itself seems unlikely. The bug disappeared with switching to the xorg-edgers ppa in Ubuntu, but it is unclear exactly why. The bug was still present in the following xorg-edgers package og xserver-xorg-core: 2:1.13.0+git20120920.70e57668-0ubuntu0ricotz and disappeared in 2:1.13.0.901+git20121123+server-1.13-branch.c0e68f8e-0ubuntu0ricotz~quantal As very similar issues were reported before in launchpad[2] and declared fixed, there might be an underlying root cause which is still open. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1153775] Re: [xorg-edgers] constant GPU hangs with recent xorg-video-intel
Like I said, processing the results from the GPU hang kills apport's GPU reporting module. Every time it tries to process the log files for packaging into a bug report, it dies. Then I get a bug report for apport itself to file--and I think I did, in fact. Unsurprisingly, like all (?) the other bug reports I've filed against Ubuntu in several years of using it: no response. I'm getting very tired of being warned by Steam that I'm using an outdated Intel driver, and would I upgrade, please. I suppose I can just wait for Raring, but I'm trying to be helpful. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1154153] Re: Nvidia module crash: GPU has fallen off the bus.
This has some interesting, and possibly related reading. http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/debian-ubuntu-rhel-fedora-linux-nvidia- nvrm-gpu-fallen-off-bus/ The suggested solution is to turn on persistence for the nvidia card using # /usr/bin/nvidia-smi -pm 1 This was never an issue with 3.2.0-38+310.14-0ubuntu0.1 *(the same version I am currently running). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
FYI: I realise that this bug has been marked as 'Won't Fix', but providing what details I can in case this is looked into again (with 12.04 being LTS and the release likely to be adopted by enterprise customers requiring paid support). Experiencing sporadic full system freeze/crash - approximately 2-4 times weekly. No mouse or trackpad response (no cursor movement), no keyboard response. System will not halt as normal when closing the laptop lid. Recovery requires hard shutdown/reboot. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1154380] [NEW] Installing xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal on Precise causes package tree issues and prevents X display managers from loading
Public bug reported: Installing xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal on Precise prevents X display managers from loading (e.g., lightdm, kdm, lxdm, gdm). System then either locks up on splash screen or on a well lit (backlit?) black screen. ACPI is still responsive and a normal shutdown via the ACPI power button event is still possible, but keyboard and mouse input are unresponsive, which prevents switching to a console session. Selecting "Recovery Mode" from the grub menu and then choosing "Resume" allows a normal console session, complete with multiple console switching via Alt+Function-key. Replacing only the xserver-xorg-video- intel-lts-quantal package with xserver-xorg-video-intel does not revert the system to a previous state as expected (i.e., "apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel"). To get X11 to work again required both replacing all relevant quantal packages (listed using "dpkg -l quantal") and reinstalling xorg via "apt-get install xorg". X11 still appears to be in some sort of limbo state though, with applications crashing that had worked before the upgrade to quantal driver and subsequent downgrade back, so there' s got to be some kind of configuration change that didn't go through when attempting to revert to the normal X11 driver for Precise. So far I'm only noticing a difference with WINE, for which I'll see about filing separate bug reports or comments to existing bugs. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1154389] [NEW] screen freezes. I have to switch off the computer
Public bug reported: The problem seems to happen when I am using the Firefox and/or the Thunderbird. The screen freezes, the mouse loses control and I have to do a hard reboot on the laptop. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033695] Re: External HDMI Monitor does not get detected / invalid EDID checksum
Chris, you mention overriding the EDID. I have a similar problem using the i915 driver with a laptop display that fails to report its EDID. I have tried using drm_kms_helper, but I haven't gotten it to work yet. /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/edid contains correct EDID data from my firmware/edid file, but /sys/devices/pci:00/:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/modes remains empty and the driver provides incompatible modes. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1154412] [NEW] Xorg freeze- Ubuntu freezes occasionally during use, can only be fixed by rebooting
Public bug reported: According to ubuntu-bug, I'm having GPU lockups. I have an old HP PC with a NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT video card. It seems to freeze mostly within 10 or so minutes of logging in- if I go for more than that without a lockup, it seems the whole session will be issue-free. I've had it happen while watching YouTube videos in both Firefox and Chrome, playing music on Spotify, installing packages with Synaptic, and logging in. The screen freezes and the only way to continue is to hold down the power button and reboot the computer. Alt+SysReq+K and REISUB don't work. If audio is playing, the last second or so of audio will continue to loop until the computer is reset. I've used both the NVIDIA recommended drivers and the Nouveau drivers, and the problem has persisted. My install is only 11 days old, so I haven't had it in a 100% working state yet. A photo of the screen won't help, since it freezes on whatever I was doing last. Any help would be appreciated! 1. Ubuntu 12.10 amd64 2. xorg 1:7.7+1ubuntu4 3. Computer should not freeze during use or should be able to be rebooted with REISUB or Alt+Sysreq+K. 4. Computer freezes during use and can't be recovered without resetting it.
