[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982889] Re: X trying to start before plymouth has finished using the drm driver
Thanks for the logs. Unfortunately neither of these match the OP's sequence of events, and thus does not hit the problematic drm loading race that the original reporter was seeing. So, not surprising that this patch does nothing for your cases. I'd like to see someone who has Thomas' bug to test this. Specifically, if on startup you see in /var/log/Xorg.0.log a sequence of messages like this: [ 2.555] drmOpenDevice: open result is 9, (OK) [ 2.555] drmGetBusid returned '' [ 2.555] (EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version. [ 2.555] (EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master. [ 2.555] (II) intel(0): Creating default Display subsectio Then it's worth testing the patch in the PPA, and I think it will fix that case (or at least give us more specific data). @Adam, I'd want to see the Xorg.0.log from the first boot, when you get dumped into low graphics mode. And maybe Xorg.0.log.old. The log you posted appears to be from a successful session so that doesn't illuminate why the failed session failed. @Franck, it's possible your bug (#1129220) is distinct and was incorrectly duped here, but it does seem that your issue belongs with this general "class" of problems. However I think a different kind of fix will be needed in your case. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libdrm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/982889 Title: X trying to start before plymouth has finished using the drm driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdrm/+bug/982889/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 982889] Re: X trying to start before plymouth has finished using the drm driver
@Adam, interesting. Indeed your problem also appears to be distinct from the OP. It looks like you have a hybrid graphics system and both intel and nouveau drivers are loading. It sounds like the nouveau driver isn't detecting any connected outputs and eventually unloads itself. The modesetting driver decides to load up after that for some reason, and immediately proceeds to segfault. >From your comment #39 it sounds like with the patch, X is getting further along? Looking at your original bug (#1125759) you had been seeing this problem early on, which broke everything subsequent to it: [ 3.579] (II) config/udev: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card1) [ 4.377] (II) config/udev: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card0) [ 4.377] setversion 1.4 failed <--- oops [ 4.379] (--) PCI:*(0:0:2:0) 8086:0126:1028:0446 rev 9, Mem @ 0xf140/4194304, 0xe000/268435456, I/O @ 0x4000/64 [ 4.379] (--) PCI: (0:1:0:0) 10de:0df5:1028:0446 rev 161, Mem @ 0xf000/16777216, 0xc000/268435456, 0xd000/33554432, I/O @ 0x3000/128, BIOS @ 0x/524288 Now you're seeing this: [ 3.610] (II) config/udev: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card1) [ 5.309] (II) config/udev: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card0) [ 5.311] (--) PCI:*(0:0:2:0) 8086:0126:1028:0446 rev 9, Mem @ 0xf140/4194304, 0xe000/268435456, I/O @ 0x4000/64 [ 5.311] (--) PCI: (0:1:0:0) 10de:0df5:1028:0446 rev 161, Mem @ 0xf000/16777216, 0xc000/268435456, 0xd000/33554432, I/O @ 0x3000/128, BIOS @ 0x/524288 I would expect the patch to show some debug info if it is applying its fix; it should display a stream of "drm device not ready (#), sleeping for 20us" messages, and then the system should boot up to fully functional (or some permutation thereof). So, I'm not sure we can say the patch fixed it for you; it could be just coincidental. This is a race condition after all, and as such can be influenced by all manner of random things, and maybe it just had lucky timing on that boot. As to the modesetting segfault, that would be worth tracking as its own bug. Did a crash file get generated for that in /var/crash/ ?

I don't think the patch from #31 will fix this because X is really getting EACCESS (0xfff3) not EAGAIN as can be seen in #22 I also think this is probably an issue in plymouth because plymouth is told to quit and release drm before X starts but it somehow does not allways do this in time. Maybe there should be "plymouth --wait quit" instead of "plymouth quit" in /etc/init/plymouth-stop.conf? I tried to find how exactly "plymouth quit" is handled (especially if the plymouth daemon really releases drm before that command returns) but I never got to the answer. You can try to change the X patch in #31 to spin also on EACCESS (bad solution imho) or plymouth should be fixed to really release drm when told to quit. And I also had this problem in Fedora, someone else reported it at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=855677 I reenabled plymouth-splash and will play a little with it again, but it happens randomly in maybe 1/10 reboots so it's not easy to hit. ** Bug watch added: Red Hat Bugzilla #855677 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=855677 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libdrm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/982889 Title: X trying to start before plymouth has finished using the drm driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libdrm/+bug/982889/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1130281] Re: [MIR] qtbase
fwiw, qt5 is an evolution of qt4, so it doesn't need a new security review. That said, we do *not* want to support qt4 and qt5 in 14.04 LTS (and preferably sooner). Is there a plan to migrate supported packages to qt5 so we can drop qt4 to universe? ** Changed in: qtbase-opensource-src (Ubuntu) Assignee: Ubuntu Security Team (ubuntu-security) => (unassigned) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libxcb in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1130281 Title: [MIR] qtbase To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firebird/+bug/1130281/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I want to make it check for specific error codes but want to see what actually is coming through when the patch's code gets hit. I agree that while the kernel guys say it should be EAGAIN, the data I've seen so far suggests a different error code (maybe EACCESS). > I also think this is probably an issue in plymouth because plymouth is > told to quit and release drm before X starts but it somehow does not > allways do this in time. Well maybe, however we've seen people disable plymouth but still hit the race condition. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1071091] Re: External monitor on laptop comes up mirrored
Yes, clone mode. This bug was opened really just for collecting a set of logs to compare with another bug about this issue. Effectively the problem is that gnome is responsible for setting multi- monitors to extended when present, however it's inconsistent doing this and comes up cloned in situations where it shouldn't (which is gnome's fault). A side problem is that users *would* like to have it come up cloned automatically when the external display is a projector; however afaik there is no way to deterministically detect whether a display is a projector. It can be done heuristically by checking if the display's physical dimensions are 0x0mm (which seems always the case with projectors), however that is not yet implemented in gnome. A compounding problem is that Fedora *does* patch X server to do extended by default, and gnome shell's config tools were built with this assumption. (At least, this seemed so a few weeks ago when we were studying the problem). In any case, I don't need this bug anymore (the issue is a gnome one, reported elsewhere), so will close it out. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1071091 Title: External monitor on laptop comes up mirrored To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1071091/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1130281] Re: [MIR] qtbase
It looks like the big consumers of qt4 on the desktop image (which is what I assume you mean by supported packages; there are other KDE packages still in main but I don't believe they are supported) are: * the signon components * ubuntuone (via python-qt4) * python-qt4 (upstream supports qt5-rc, but that support is not packaged yet) So a bit of unscoped work. But we don't want to encourage people to write things now that use qt4, (i.e. we don't want to hold back on using qt5). So I think it's more reasonable to allow qt5 and port to it in time for 14.04 LTS. I've filed bug 1130782 (ubuntuone), bug 1130780 (signon), and bug 1130784 (python-qt4) about the desire to have ports. ** No longer affects: firebird (Ubuntu) ** Package changed: libxcb (Ubuntu) => xcb-util-image (Ubuntu) ** Also affects: xcb-util-renderutil (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: xcb-util-keysyms (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libxcb in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1130281 Title: [MIR] qtbase To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qtbase-opensource-src/+bug/1130281/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
@Brian Semrad and @Joe Carey, and others who are new here, please read bug description. This bug is about a *complete system lock-up*. No other TTYs can be started. Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution is hard reset. This is NOT a compiz problem. Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI and Intel graphics. If you are still able to TTY or SSH into other sessions, move the mouse or use the keyboard, file another bug. If you can still work with your system after crash/freeze or you can see the logs than this is not the same bug we're talking about in this thread. In my case when it freeze, it is dead completely. No logs, no mouse no keyboards (keyboard lights always blinks and if the sound card was playing something, the sounds will loop). The only solution is to hard reset, or just wait after a while (15-20secs) my system will reboot itself automatically. And to update Re #713: After applying the fix, it's been smooth and solid now for me. No problem no freezes. In fact I feel the system seems faster and smoother. Still, fingers crossed, it has only been a couple of days with no freeze. (Very encouraging considering before the fix, freeze could happen several times a day in random) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1099846] Re: with dual monitors connected, ubuntu will not shutdown
Hello, With dual monitors connected I shut down the offending laptop. As usually happens with both monitors connected - both screens go black - and shutdown apparently stops. I tried to connect vis ssh from another networked computer - got the message "connection refused". Unplugging the second monitor resumes the normal shutdown. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
Hello, the same problem for me. all starting with a chrome crash then firefox. I tried to restart the browser several times but it always closed. Then complete freeze of PC. Hard reboot several times, and each time the same symptoms. In addition, after each reboot, full error message but never the same and always freeze after few minutes. Unfortunately I had reinstalled everything and it no longer a problem for a few days. Today, the problem reappeared. Firefox and thunderbird crash, attempt to reopen but not full and freeze. Interestingly, I have a windows 7 VM with virtualbox vm and keeps rebooting every 1-2 minutes since the first freeze.
