[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 833841] Re: libgl1-mesa-glx alternative link

2011-08-29 Thread Digulla-hepe
I have the same problem on Natty. The root cause seems to be this line:

setting up libgl1-mesa-glx (7.10.2-0ubuntu2.1) ...
update-alternatives: error: alternative link /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules is
already managed by i386-linux-gnu_gl_conf.
dpkg: error processing libgl1-mesa-glx (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

My guess is that this is because of the Nvidia driver because of the
content of /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules:

$ ll /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 833841] Re: libgl1-mesa-glx alternative link

2011-08-29 Thread Digulla-hepe
Update: I'm not using the standard Nvidia driver because I of a bug in
the r8169 driver (see bug 821454). To fix that, I installed kernel 3.0.1
(see comment #3).

After that, I needed the Nvidia driver from xorg edgers (nvidia-
current_285.03-0ubuntu1~edgers~natty1_amd64.deb)

A workaround to fix the bug here, I removed nvidia-current, did the
update and reinstalled.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 835945] Re: Hansol H750 giving wrong EDID refresh rate

2011-08-29 Thread Tormod Volden
Thanks for your (new) report. The old one seems to have been forgotten and
died. The issue here is clear: The monitor is reporting bad data in the EDID.
From the xrandr output you posted in the other report:
 1280x1024 (0x3d) 599.5MHz +HSync +VSync *current
which is also seen in your ddcprobe output:
 dtiming: 1280x1024@392

I believe there is no bug in the drivers, but a quirk (hardware-specific
workaround) should be added for your type of monitor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 833841] Re: libgl1-mesa-glx alternative link

2011-08-29 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
This looks very much like you've installed packages from the xorg-edgers
PPA which have been multiarched and then downgraded; that's
(unfortunately) not supported.

Alternatively, you might be mixing versions - the nvidia packages in
xorg-edgers are multiarched, and they won't install with mesa from
Natty.

status invalid

Your system has a lot of non-standard packages installed, and this has
caused this problem.

In particular the problem is caused because you have a multiarch version
of the nvidia driver installed (which has created the
x86_64-linux-gnu_gl_conf alternative), but the Natty mesa packages are
pre-multiarch and so conflict with that alternative.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 835945] Re: [needs quirk] Hansol H750 giving wrong EDID refresh rate

2011-08-29 Thread Damiano Dallatana
Yes, exactly, it's not a bug on the driver; I think fglrx does it well just
ignoring the wrong EDID data and forcing the refresh rate he thinks can work.
I marked the old report as a duplicate of this: I did have only this computer
and no secondary pc nor monitor to test this bug, so I had to wait for months
before filing a complete report... sorry for that, at least now we have a
complete view of the problem :) thanks Tormod :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 676166] Re: Screen corruption when resuming from suspend

2011-08-29 Thread Loris Zinsou
I experienced this bug in Natty, but the situation changed in Oneiric. The
desktop now shows corruption after a suspend/resume cycle : the Unity Launcher
and Panel are not pixelated, but the desktop is.
If I open a new window, the window seems to appear behind the pixelated layer.
If I use the expo plugin in compiz, the effect appears behind this layer too.
The only way to get rid of this is to restar Xorg.

I use a nvidia 8400m gs, drivers : 280 on a Dell xps m1330 laptop.

2011-08-29 Thread sasha
I nave nvidia-current 280.13-natty~ppa1 from Philip Johnsson's PPA and
had the same problem.

The fix was to remove nvidia-current, run updates and install nvidia-
current again.

I did not dare doing it before I read comment #3 here as I did not want
to get stuck without nvidia driver, but it all worked out just fine.

Interesting - I've just tried this in an Oneiric vm and it's not done a

makes me wonder if your original bug is present or not;

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 318325] Re: [X1100] flickering after resume from ram

2011-08-29 Thread Marco_Case
For anyone interested, I have found a solution for my Acer Aspire 5100 in
UBUNTU 11.04 (64bit version)
The flashing screen is caused by the kernel modesetting feature (KMS) that
doesn't work good on the ATI radeon xpress 1100 graphic chip, so I disabled
this feature by editing the file "/etc/default/grub" and changing the line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash” to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet
splash nomodeset”. Then I ran: sudo update-grub. Don't know if this is working
for ubuntu versions below 11.04.

For the googlers around here's the sequence:

1) open the terminal and type: gksudo gedit/etc/default/grub
2) find a line that says: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash”
3) modify that line this way: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash
nomodeset”
4) save, go back to terminal and type: sudo update-grub
5) reboot your laptop, then try to suspend it and resume, it should work.

Hope this helps someone.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 775060] Re: Random GUI "freezes" in Natty (can only move the cursor) (might be a segfault)

2011-08-29 Thread Nick Guletskii
Okay. Here is an update. Currently running: Linux AccessDenied
3.0.0-0300rc7-generic #201107120911 SMP Tue Jul 12 10:15:32 UTC 2011
i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

I had a freeze half an hour ago. I ran compiz --replace --display :0,
Segmentation fault occurred like stated in unity.log (unity launches
compiz). So I tried metacity --replace --display :0, which resulted in a
usable desktop (but without the panels, but still, I could save my
work). I couldn't replace metacity before because I didn't use the
--display param.

Therefore, I think it is a bug in compiz. I also wanted to point out
that Maverick wasn't using compiz by default, and I didn't use it
either. This means that compiz is the perfect candidate for the cause of
this bug.

Ah, cool.

Can you SSH in when this happens and do a `top`? See if it uses up 100%
of CPU, if so, I might have this same issue (freeky).

In the meantime, I'm also pushing this on compiz. Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 836876] [NEW] not checked permissions in /tmp

2011-08-29 Thread elhoir
Public bug reported:

Hello, im not sure if its a bug in Ubuntu package, or in original xorg-
xserver source code, or if this even is a bug, but still

Generally no one should face this, but i did.

As an error, i deleted /tmp folder. When i recreated it, i didnt realize
to switch back rights with "sudo chmod 777 /tmp", and X server crashes
if you try to start it without /tmp access

shouldnt X server check for it instead of crashing with SEGV signal?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 835817] Re: xrandr client truncates pixel clock freq.

2011-08-29 Thread Kevin Atkinson
Like I said its fixed upstream, so naturally it should work correctly with
Oneiric. The refresh rate it correct at 74.8 (really 74.77). This modeline
should give you exactly 75:
  "640x480x75.00" 30.906000 640 664 728 816 480 484 488 505 -HSync +VSync
when the bug is not present.

This bug is filed against Lucid, or any still supported version of
Ubuntu that use older version of xrandr that don't contain commit
27f86db.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-08-29 Thread Lars Ola Liavåg
@Alberto: I think your point would be very valid if the hardware that
was very old too. But in Lucid, I got full 3D effects using the
nvidia-173 driver, in Maverick, I had to downgrade to nvidia-96, and in
Natty, there's seems to be no way to get 3D neither in Ubuntu Classic or
Unity. Maybe I'm spoilt but I've actually gotten used to Linux and
Ubuntu supporting older hardware (also older than this) and and I don't
like the thought of ripping out my perfectly functional GeForce 7300 to
save me a second of boot time since it's anyway never going to work with
my favourite OS again.

Does anybody have experience with this graphics card and other drivers
than nvidia-96? Any tricks I could use when I can't seem to make it work
with nvidia-173 or nvidia-current?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 836974] [NEW] Dual monitor setup causes positioning issues

2011-08-29 Thread CaptSaltyJack
Public bug reported:

I've observed two position bugs running a dual monitor setup under
11.04:

1) libnotify popups appear in the upper right corner of the 2nd monitor, way
out of my area of visual focus.
2) Some apps (Libre Office) pop up their splash screen in a weird spot on the

center in between the two monitors).

Looks like a script needs to ensure /etc/ati exists before writing to

2011-08-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi cpatrick,

Thanks for that; sadly the retracer is not giving us any further
information than was originally posted.

Would you be willing to try again and collect a manual full backtrace
using gdb? Directions for doing this are available at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing (skip down past the apport
directions and look at the gdb directions.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 834438] Re: Please convert to Multiarch

2011-08-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks! The patch looks good. However, it's too late now to include
this for oneiric:

bryceh: yes, the patch looks correct to me provided that the
package builds with it applied; bear in mind that this gets entangled with the
freeze however
 (feature freeze)
slangasek, should it wait for post-beta, or delay until p opens?
bryceh: there's risk of regression for reverse-build-deps, so I
think it's "delay until p" (preferably pushing to Debian in the meantime)
 ok thanks

I've added a task to work on this for Ubuntu P, and am closing the O
task as wontfix. Thanks again for the contribution, we'll look forward
to seeing it in once the next development release opens.

2011-08-29 Thread dx9s
I also reported a pretty much duplicate issue with this in #836349 ...
looks like this has been ongoing for a while and is stuck on kernel API
call changes... I was trying to upgrade to Ubuntu's kernel 2.6.38-10
(really need 2.6.39 as that is known to have USB 3.0 **HUB** support
38-10 might have backported that but I don't know).. I guess the only
way to go is to skip to something not LTS that might have a newer / new
enough kernel. YES the current kernel I have has xHCI support, and my
two hard drives plug in and work (fast) but can't add a third USB 3.0
drive without a USB 3.0 hub and that support isn't added until 2.6.39 .
So for me now, it's have USB 3.0 Hub support for nVidia OpenGL (and dual
display) support..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 815978] Re: EDID information not read

2011-08-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, thanks, however neither of that data shows a TV being connected.

Try enabling debug for the kernel drm. Launch 'sudo xdiagnose', it'll
be the first checkbox; then reboot, reproduce the bug, and capture your
full 'dmesg' output and add it as an attachment to this bug report.

This is likely a kernel bug rather than xorg.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 836945] Re: Screen always goes blank after 10 minutes

2011-08-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Barry,

It sounds sort of like gnome-settings-daemon is not capturing the
settings properly, so your system is defaulting to 10 minutes. I notice
this in your dmesg which hints perhaps gsd is dying (coincidentally in
some power module):

[22483.782153] gnome-settings-[2178] trap divide error ip:7fdd4a47931b
sp:7fff856edb10 error:0 in libpower.so[7fdd4a46b000+17000]

You can query and set the default X screen blanking via xset. For
instance:

 $ xset q | grep -A4 DPMS
DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 7200Suspend: 7200Off: 14400
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On

humber:~$ xset dpms 10 20 30
humber:~$ xset q | grep -A4 DPMS
DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 10Suspend: 20Off: 30
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On

Run 'xset' by itself to see other options it supports.

Since the line in dmesg suggests something's gone wrong with g-s-d I'm
reassigning this bug there. However, if you find tweaking dpms settings
via xset doesn't work around the bug, feel free to reopen an X task.

2011-08-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Your patience is appreciated. A fix is ready and waiting, but it has
been waiting for review by other developers for about 2 months.

Also note, doing a distribution upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04 or later will
also resolve this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 834883] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV

2011-08-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Jay,

Sorry you're having trouble, however we no longer provide development
support in the distro for the i845 GPU. I looked at your crash dump
anyway, but it was not clear to me why it was failing; it appears to be
invalid memory being accessed.

Fortunately, upstream still maintains the 8xx codebases and may be
willing to help your debug the issue and get a fix committed that we can
include in future ubuntu releases.

The only workaround I can suggest is to stick with an older version of
Ubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 831336] Re: running 'xterm' exists X session

2011-08-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, the code is failing on this line in exa_migration_mixed.c in the
server:

pExaPixmap->sys_ptr = malloc(pExaPixmap->sys_pitch *
 pPixmap->drawable.height);

However the backtrace doesn't indicate what the values are for sys_pitch
or drawable.height, so it's unclear why malloc would fail here.

Can you tell me more about your setup? What makes it unusual compared
with a stock Ubuntu instance? Any ideas why memory allocation might be
failing?

Also, you mentioned that you saw this "relatively recently" - is your
implication that this used to work in oneiric and regressed recently?
If so, can you give an estimate as to roughly what day (or range of
days) the regression began for you?

You mention gnome-shell... are you able to reproduce this bug *only* in
gnome-shell, or do you see it under other window managers like unity or
unity-2d?

I'm not able to reproduce this bug on my oneiric box, and unfortunately
the stacktrace that was automatically included lacks most of the
symbols.

Please collect a full backtrace manually using gdb - see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions (skip down past all
the apport directions for the stuff relating to gdb).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 833840] Re: synaptics touchpad doesnt enable after disabling from fn+f6 key on dell xps l702x. Even after restart just doens't work now.

2011-08-29 Thread Ahmed Shams
Hi Amit,
Thank you for testing and reporting. We have some work to do with this bug.
 * 1st, I need to check if the problem actually comes from synaptics driver, so
please Alt+F2 and enter 'apport-collect 833840'(Of course without quotes :D).
 * 2nd: Did the command '$ gconftool-2 --set --type boolean
/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true' enable it?
would you please check if that command really did set the value, using
'gconftool-2 --get /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled' what
does it reply? 'true' OR 'false' ? if 'false' please use the first command to
set it again.
 * 3rd: Please enter this command into your terminal: 'cat
/proc/bus/input/devices > ~/Desktop/devices.txt' and attach the 'devices.txt'
file from your Desktop to this E-Mail/Report.
 * 4th: What does 'synclient -l' reply?

Thanks and happy Debugging :)
