[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456637] Re: Please consider turning powermizer OFF
I do not support this bug. The users with faulty hardware that is affected by this bug, while significant, are not in the majority. I would be very frustrated if suddenly an Nvidia update caused Powermizer to be disabled for me. For most laptop users, this feature is crucial to obtaining decent battery life from these power-hungry graphics adapters. The solution is obviously for Nvidia to fix its drivers. I do think, however, that when a user installs the Nvidia driver a HUGE warning should pop up to advise users that they are installing a proprietary driver, that the code has not been validated by *anyone* and that it could very easily destroy their computer, that if they experience problems it is NOT Ubuntu's fault and to report all issues directly to Nvidia. -- Please consider turning powermizer OFF https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/456637 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 529387] [NEW] Screen goes "Out of Range" when boot into live cd and first time ubuntu boot up
Public bug reported: This is a bug which has been affecting me since Ubuntu 7.10 (its the first release I started with), and has happened in every single Ubuntu release since then. I have been putting off writing this bug report, because I am not sure how I can explain the problem well enough. The issue is with the monitor I use with Ubuntu. Its a Advent F159 15inch (4:3) monitor (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Advent-F159-Silver-LCD- Monitor/dp/B000GRU6O2) It supports 800x600 and 1024x768 with 60hz. When I boot off the live CD with Ubuntu, when the it gets to the stage with xorg takes over, it chooses the wrong setting for the monitor, the monitor says "Out of Range". What I have to do is start the Ubuntu live CD, tell it to boot into live cd mode, then unplug the vga port on monitor. After about 5mins (enough time for Ubuntu to boot), I plug in the monitor and I can see the Ubuntu desktop. It will be running on 800x600 at 60hz, 16bit. Here, I am able to install Ubuntu. Once install is complete, and I boot into Ubuntu for the first time, the problem will happen again if I leave the monitor plugged in. So I have force a restart and unplug the monitor, boot into Ubuntu, and plug the monitor back in. Ubuntu will again set the monitor to 800x600 at 60hz, 16bit. I will then configure xorg.conf file. All I do is tell it to use 1024x768 @ 60hz, on 24bit. I restart Ubuntu, and its running at the correct resolution for me. I can now leave the monitor plugged in and it will not give me the "out of range" message. In the time I have had Ubuntu, I have used 3 computers with this monitor. First Ubuntu PC used an ATi Radeon 7000 card (using ati open source driver), my next computer used a Intel i815 (using intel opensource driver) and my latest computer is using nVidia ION (using nvidia's drivers). This out of range problem happened with all these computers. I attach my xorg configure for all these computers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398283] Re: [NV34M] Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in memset() using nouveau driver on powerpc
I can understand that. However, on Karmic the nouveau drivers were installable and working; I used them in place of the -nv ones for months and they did not crash. Moreover, I noticed a net improvement of the quality of the on-screen 2D rendering or, alas, gradients for example did not have that ugly alone that the -nv drivers produce. So I can understand the wontfix, however keep in mind that there has been a stable period in karmic in which the powerpc nouveau drivers worked and worked very well. -- [NV34M] Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in memset() using nouveau driver on powerpc https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/398283 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368394] Re: [i855] netbook launcher mouse focus is off
No matter what, it how does the status "Fix Released" status for xserver-xorg-video-intel correspond to the status in karmic? Also, is the support status of an officially supported release really reduced like you suggest when a new release is out, and even before it is released? According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases Karmic (being only 4 months old!) will reach it's end of life date on April 2011. Is there a different date for when bugfixes will not be done anymore, like 2 months before next release? I understand that if no easy bugfix is possible for karmic, it will not be fixed. But the mere fact that a new release is close hardly seems like a valid reason for rejecting a bug report. -- [i855] netbook launcher mouse focus is off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368394 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 528165] Re: using compiz causes full screen videos to crash
Thank you for reporting this issue about xserver-xorg-video-nv. Starting with Lucid, Ubuntu is transitioning to using the -nouveau video driver by default instead of -nv. The reason for this change is because upstream development for the -nv driver has been quite slow. We hope bugs will get fixed faster with -nouveau as well. Because of this, I'm closing this bug report at this time. I'm marking it incomplete because what you describe is probably a valid issue, but we do not have intentions to work on it in Ubuntu. If you would still like to see this issue investigated, I would encourage you to file it upstream. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-nv (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- using compiz causes full screen videos to crash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/528165 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nv in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368394] Re: [i855] netbook launcher mouse focus is off
We try to fix bugs in the development distro; fixing them in releases causes work duplication since we also have to fix them in the devel distro. We have to stop spending time on fixing bugs in releases at some point or we wouldn't ever make progress in the devel distro. Most updates after a release are usually done in the month subsequent to release; of course we will continue updating the releases for e.g. security updates, or critical bug fixes such as timezone information updates. The fact that a new release with the fix is approaching at least gives people with a bug a forward path which they will have to follow at some point anyway.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 368394] Re: [i855] netbook launcher mouse focus is off
Certainly if a patch for this fix materialized it would probably be a good candidate for karmic-updates but it doesn't seem that a specific fix has been found. It does however appear that the bug got fixed somewhere in updating the driver to entirely new versions. Ubuntu's policy is not to push an entire version, which may contain more regressions, to fix a single bug. A specific patch addressing this bug would need to be isolated. Right now the bug status seems to accurately reflect what's going on. This isn't a bug in netbook launcher so I closed all those tasks as Invalid. I marked the xserver-xorg-video-intel task as "Fix Released" because the default status tracks the development release (Lucid right now). We track stable release updates via release nominations. So that should be all good. The only remaining consideration is if we should open an additional task for Karmic. Loïc declined the nomination because there is not yet an actionable patch that we can push to karmic-updates. If such a patch is made then certainly a Karmic bug task can be opened. I hope this makes more sense. You can read Ubuntu's update's policy here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates . I would imagine that this bug could perhaps warrant an update, but only if a specific patch is isolated and has been tested.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516909] Re: [Clarkdale] entire desktop environment locks up in 9.10, i3-530 proc, built-in graphics
madbiologist said "You must be getting frustrated." Yeah, that's actually an understatement. The bottom line is that I can't keep my hardware here idle all day, doing nothing, besides doing stability tests. I've got a brand new machine I've built which is essentially unusable. It's my fault for selecting a brand new processor, integrated graphics, etc. Bleeding edge indeed. I'm sure this problem will eventually get addressed, but I need to start using this machine now. I've already wasted too many cycles. CentOS 5.3 and Fedora 12 seem to work fine, and I have no idea what that tells us about the problem. Thanks for the help & support. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 529563] [NEW] Lucid Alpha3 live cd failing to boot properly, monitor powers off during boot.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau Hello, Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 Live CD. The problem I am having is the live cd will only get as far as the cd's boot menu, and when I select either install or live cd, something shuts off my monitor and the power button blinks (no output to monitor I think). I tried this several times without setting special boot options, and several times with random boot options but I still can't get it too keep power to my monitor. This also happens with the check cd for errors option. Being that I have no display afterwards and the live cd is session only I have no log files or error messages to look at. If it is not the Nouveau drivers, then it might be ubiquity or xorg crashing my display. It is not a problem with my monitor, because I am running Lucid alpha3 as we speak. Also, virtualbox ose in Karmic had no problem running the iso image of Lucid-alpha3. I md5'ed the iso and it checks out fine. The problem is only booting the cd from my PC. Another observation is the lack of display does not prevent Lucid Alpha 3 live cd from booting into a live session, because after 5 minutes or more I can here the ubuntu login sound eventually. I finally managed to get alpha 3 installed on my computer, but to do that I had to perform the upgrade (update-manager -d) over my 9.10 installation. I couldn't use a free partition like I was hoping. Prior to the Karmic to Lucid upgrade, I installed the proprietary Nvidia graphics card driver to ensure I had working drivers after the upgrade. I believe the driver series was 185. This driver does not show up in the window of the hardware manager in Lucid alpha3. Instead, it shows I have two of them activated, but not currently in use. The names of them are "version current" and "nVida/Riva/TNT/GeForce". My graphics card is a MSI branded Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS PCI Express x16. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 222444] Re: Login screen has wrong resolution
The login screen is something like a user of the system, but I don't know which it is. So if we knew this user, it should be possible to set the display resolution for this user. I have the same problem and had it with each and every version of Ubuntu. My preferred resolution is 1152x864 at 75Hz. The login screen comes with 1600x1200 at 75Hz (in theory my CRT could do this, but practically it won't sync, so I must change the resolution somehow). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 517318] [NEW] Boot Crashes in Lucid Linx
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I was using Lucid, but after installing some updates on Feb 2 I could not boot into my computer. The screen actually looked like it was melting into the centre of the screen. The boot process makes it past grub but dies shortly after. I fooled around for a while to try and get it working, but had no luck. I reinstalled with an alpha 2 disc and was working again. I then did an apt-get dist-upgrade, rebooted and my screen was melting again. The only new software I installed on the second install was synaptic, Firefox and VLC. The problem may have something to do with my video. I believe I am using the open chrome driver. Here is a list of my hardware with lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.
