OK, so the page is not HTTPS, but 'they' can get your address from the
phone book, electoral roll etc. I wouldn't worry about it myself.

I sign these, and if I'm happy...

Hmm.. I'm having all sorts of problems getting it to work. My Wifi card
is on ra0. But when I put that as packet sauce it seems not to like it.

No gui starts when I type sudo kismet, just a few lines in the terminal
then it ends, due to the capture sauce problem.

Any help would be welcome.

There seems to be a problem with discovery. While blue tooth seems to be
working, bluetooth services start and a message pops up about 'device in
discover mode'. It can't find my phone and my phone can't find it.

Yeah, the bluetooth icon appears when I plug it in, and it says it's in

What you have to remember is not to trust any security on your network.
But, you can over do it. All of the 'hackers' I know won't sit outside
your house trying to crack your WEP to get your eBay password etc.

One of the simplest things you can do to keep people off your bandwidth
is switch your router off when you're not going to use it. Saves
electricity too.

The fan could just be a compatibility issue. The slow speed looks
like lack of RAM, try using a lighter desktop, i.e. not Gnome or KDE

As a rough rule, Ubuntu + Gnome needs 128meg minimum to run on.

[ubuntu-uk] breezy: todays update caution

2005-09-16 Thread baza
Just a quick, 'heads up' for people using Breezy on laptops that use
Broadcom chipsets in their wireless card.

On my Dell Inspiron 2200 todays update broke my wireless connection. I
had to remove and reinstall ndiswrapper to get it back up.

OK, I've fixed mine with, sudo update-alternatives --auto
usplash-artwork.so then, sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-$(uname -r).
I've also noticed that little gui for editing the grub menu list has
gone, which is a shame because it was a handy tool on duel booting

If anyone is experiencing these sorts of problems, it's really
important

to visit http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/ and search for similar issues. If
nothing is found, it is really helpful to report the issue! That way
they can be fixed ASAP.

problems with suspend to RAM are related to acpi-support.

AFAIK however, it is impossible that suspend to ram was working out of
the box on your laptop: suspend to ram has always been disabled by
default in /etc/default/acpi-support and required editing that file to
activate it. did you do anything to that file? What response did you
give when it asked if you wanted to replace it while upgrading? These
are all useful questions to answer in a bug report.

Weirdly it was working without me having to edit files. I just hit
the, 'standby' button and it did. When asked by upgrade if I wanted
to keep or replace I opted to keep my version of acpi-support.

Or you could:
1. Stop using MySpace.
2. Write to the site and complain about their use of Flash.
If they are showing a video then there really is NO need for flash.
Can't you embed video directly in HTML anyway, isn't it what the
object tag does?
Though I did once try using the object tag with audio, it played the
audio in FireFox, but offered no way of controlling it.
I don't see why sites can't just have a link to the video file instead
of using a program they wrote in between. Isn't flash going to eat
more CPU, isn't it interpreted not compiled? Media is one of the areas
where CPU speed is still a factor.

If more people complained sites wouldn't do things like this.
It would also be useful if video could be embeded in a HTML page and
the browser could do what is needed with it (i.e. display it inline
with controls or pass it to an external application).

Writing to them, or rather, dropping an email, is a good idea. Just
done it.

Macromedia Flash is a proprietary, binary module (aka no source-
code, no way
of fixing it or know what it does). Flash version 8 is not
available for
i386 Linux. Apparently version 9 or 8.5 may be made available, but
that

isn't the case yet. The best you can do for the moment is:

  sudo apt-get install wine

Download the Win32 version of Firefox:

I would have never thought of that, outstanding :) I'll do that

I vote for the mail list too. I hate web forums, I find I just get
bored of clicking my way around.

The video, 'problem' could be that you are expanding the window
beyond what the video is meant to be viewed at. If you're having
problems with things like your DVDs playing in full screen check to
see if you have dma on for your dvdrom.

Can't help with the 32/64bit question. Google?

If the CD has a .exe program on you'll need wine, even then, it may
not work. If it's just video it'll play fine.

You could use gedit, tho you'll need to run this as 'root' to write

Yeah, gedit is a graphical editor, like notepad on windows. You can
reconfigure the X11 file using, if I remember the code right, sudo
dpkg reconfigure xserver-xorg this takes you through a question and
answer session that will write you a new xorg.conf at the end. But
really, editing the xorg.conf file 'by hand' is easy.

Have you tried using xine to play them? It's what I use on my Ubuntu

Hmmm.. I've been using a cheap router, Belkin 54g, since I went wifi,

I did that without problems using the apt-get update, apt-get upgrade,
apt-get dist-upgrade (twice the latter) and it worked fine.

Is there a way you could download and burn an ISO and if it all goes pete tong
your mum install if you posted the cd?
If you do go for, at least get her to back up /home/her/ to a usb
keydrive at least, just in case.

OK, I've just tried this update on my 'testing' laptop, a Dell Inspiron 2200.
It all rebooted without issues here
not very helpful in one way, I can't track down your problem amd help
you with it. But unless others report it, it looks like the problem is
at your end.

Are you using a USB type modem? There are a few steps you need to follow
to get these up and running. Check the forum and wiki.

Linux is not that tricky to get working with wifi, you just need to
check that the hardware is supported.

[ubuntu-uk] printer problem

2006-12-16 Thread baza
Hi, can anyone advise me on a printer issue? I've got an HP Deskjet 3745
printer. It's detected as a 3740, which is ok, but when I try to print
to it the printer info always reports 'job stopped', hitting 'resume'
dose not get things moving.

Any help welcome

Sad to report, this appears not to work for me. The screen sort of,
'jumps' a couple of times but nothing else happens. So for now, I have
to 'flick to Windows' when I want to hit WoW, which is a shame.

Hi, you don't really need a anti virus, but a firewall is always a good
idea.

For photos I use Picasa, nice and easy yet does all I want.

KDE apps will work fine under Gnome.

Can't help with question four.

Fastest way would be to re-install from Synaptic. Just tested Office
here, and it seems ok. Try re-installing that too.

I don't use it myself, but I would guess that it's hiding under one of
the menus, have a mooch. Once it's running there's most likely an option
to have it start itself. Best I can do there.

To reinstall Open Office use Synaptic again, this time searching for
'Open Office'.
