[Ubuntu-manual] Two questions: One about using Ground Control and one about Quickshot

2012-05-26 Thread Patrick Dickey
Hello everyone,

I've got two questions (or more, depending on the answers). The first
one is how do we get groundcontrol working on Ubuntu 12.04 (for those
not aware, groundcontrol is a GUI implementation of the bzr system). I
get the login to launchpad screen, and log in. However, it just returns
to that screen --instead of going on to get my ssh key and other user
information).

The second question is what would it take to package quickshot for the
precise repository (and quantal, since we'll most likely be working on
that shortly)? The last repository in the quickshot-release branch is
maverick, and the iso on the Ubuntu-manual wiki page is for 10.04 (which
probably won't do much for us).

I guess a potential third question is what will it take to create
another stripped down iso based on 12.04?

If it's something that anyone could reasonably do, I may be interested
in taking it on. I've got two days (until Monday evening Central Time
US) that I can kill on this. Also I do have the source from the
Quickshot project downloaded to my computer (through bzr).

Have a great weekend. :)
Patrick.

To my knowledge, no one has tried to use Ground Control in 12.04.

Looking at the project page on Launchpad
, the latest release (and the
version of the package in the Ubuntu repositories) is 1.6.6. That was
released in April 2010. There has been activity in the Ground Control
bzr repository since then (most recently in February 2012). So if you
download the bzr repository and build that, it may have a better
chance of working.

All of our Quickshot developers have found themselves busy with other
things (life, primarily), and so Quickshot has languished quite a bit
over the past year or two. We need to find some people who are
interested in testing Quickshot to see what does and doesn't work at
the moment. Then we need to find some developers interested in taking
on the project of reviving Quickshot.

The stripped-down ISO images were quite handy, weren't they? I'm not
sure how they pulled that off. If you're interested, I can dig through
my email archives and track down who did the work on that (I think it
may have been Luke Jennings, but I'd have to check) and let you know.

Since the original Quickshot developers are no longer around, we'll
have to revive/reboot that project before we can create an Ubuntu
package that works and an ISO image that authors and editors can use.
If this is something you're interested in working on, let me know.

I posted a question for them to see if it would even work on 12.04. If
not, then it's not worth my time to try and build their daily branch.
Also, their readme file isn't as clear as I'd like, so I asked a
question about that.

I ran setup.py build on quickshot, and the first issue I got was that I
needed python-distutils-extra. Then it couldn't find a few modules and
didn't recognize some of the files. So, I either need to install some
more modules or point to their location.

Also, it looks like quickshot is mainly a front-end for quickly (which
if you try to install downloads about 153MB of files). So, I'm assuming
that I need to install that first (or it would need to become part of
the installer).

[Ubuntu-manual] 'make' in endless loop

2012-05-26 Thread Hannie Dumoleyn

Hi Jim,
After I pulled the latest version, #49, I gave the command 'make', the
output of which I send you so you can compare it with yours. I do see

** WARNING ** Failed to convert input string to UTF16...
in your output, but after googling it appears that this is not a serious
problem.
Others may be more helpful, but perhaps comparing the two outputs may
reveal something.

Success!

Hey all, I have translated the Microblogging section to LaTeX and pushed to
bzr.

Here is the pdf if anyone wants to see but does not use bzr:

I did very minimal editing on the section, and I think someone else should
look it over too.

Re: [Ubuntu-manual] 'make' in endless loop

2012-05-26 Thread Jim Connett
Well...for whatever reason...I'm back in business. I let the make process
run for 35 minutes...it went through the build process several times, but I
now have a 150ish page manual that is viewable.

There ARE a lot of error strings being generated, and I'm not sure if this
is "normal LaTeX stuff" during our creation/editing process---I'm just
going to trust that these are acceptable at this time and move forward.

Thanks, Hannie, for your quick reply.

[Ubuntu-manual] Advanced Topics section

2012-05-26 Thread Patrick Dickey
Hi everyone,

I think I asked some of these questions the last time around, but for
some reason they never got changed in the manual (my fault, as I didn't
properly proof-read my section), but here we go again.

Managing Users:

No question here, per se. I made a few changes though. I removed
portions that don't apply anymore (like clicking the "Change" button),
and altered the portions that needed work (like changing "Add" to a "+"
and "Delete" to a "-", and clicking the "Unlock" button to enable
changing).

Should I add a warning because the dialog box shows the password in
clear-text, or would that be something of concern? Something along the
lines of "The dialog box shows the password in clear text (instead of
dots or asterisks), so be careful when making changes in public
settings."

Managing Groups:

Since this isn't an option anymore (thanks Unity :D), should I remove it
entirely, or point the reader to the wiki pages on managing groups?
Also, it can be done via the command line with groupadd and groupmod, I
believe. So, should I cover that instead of the GUI?

Actually the "Using the Command Line" section pretty much covers this
for me. So, I think I'll just combine that with this section, and
re-word it somehow. My other option is just to re-word the existing
sub-sections with the appropriate command line argument.

Applying Groups to Files and Folders:

Should I point out that you can only do this to files/folders that
you're the owner of? At least that's my understanding of how it works
(so if I'm wrong, please correct me).

I should have my revisions completed by tomorrow morning. If I don't
have the screenshots tomorrow morning, I'll have them tomorrow night at
the latest. In my terminal screenshot, I'm going to have a picture of it
showing three commands "pwd", "uname -a" (for an example of arguments)
and "cd /" (since it's one that is mentioned in the text). Unless you
just want the default terminal window (what they see when they
originally open it).

Also, since I have multiple users in my system, how should I deal with
that in the Users Settings screenshot? (leave them alone, blur them,
black them out, etc)

Have a great day:)
Patrick.

Re: [Ubuntu-manual] Microblogging

Hi Anthony, Thank you very much. I just have one question. Would it be
possible to interlace the figures with text, instead of clumping all the
figures in a single page? Thank you once again.

 Hi,

Finished making changes to microblogging section and added new

Re: [Ubuntu-manual] 'make' in endless loop

2012-05-26 Thread Patrick Dickey
Glad you got it sorted out. I was thinking that mine took about 20
minutes or so (just doing make ubuntu-manual-en_US.pdf). As for the
errors, I think it depends on what they are. The ones that say things
like marginpar moved on page xx or whatnot, are more informational than
anything.

You'll know if it's a major issue, when you try reading your section of
the manual (or the entire manual near the end). Things just won't look
right, and you'll have a corresponding error message to tell you why (or
at least point you in the right direction).

Have a great weekend.:)
Patrick.

Hello, everyone.

To Jim: I didn't see anything in your logs that indicated a
show-stopping error. The logs that you and Hannie posted are typical.

20 minutes? Wow! It sounds like something odd is happening. When I
run it, it takes less than a minute:

$ make clean; time make
real0m34.664s
user0m38.690s
sys 0m1.916s

If it's consistently taking folks a long time to build the PDF, let me
know and I'll try to help you troubleshoot the issue. It really
shouldn't take more than a couple minutes at the most. (Our manual
isn't *that* complicated and LaTeX is quite speedy. It was designed
over 30 years ago, after all, and our computers have gotten a bit
faster since then.)

Re: [Ubuntu-manual] 'make' in endless loop

2012-05-26 Thread Patrick Dickey
Well, I am on an e-machines. So right there it's as if I'm running a
computer from 2012 BC. My results this time were 2m20.038s (real),
1m17.877s (user), 0m3.340s (system) just doing make clean; time make.
The results were similar for make clean; time make
ubuntu-manual-en_US.pdf.

Also this morning, I had some other cpu-intensive programs running, so
that's probably a factor. So if you're on a low-end consumer machine, I
would make sure that nothing else is running at the same time. Just to
guarantee that it's getting the most out of the cpu.

Have a great day:)
Patrick.

Ah, okay. Those times look more reasonable.

One cause of slow-downs that I've see is if one of the fonts hasn't
been installed. It takes *forever* to figure out that the font is
missing and will grind away for minutes on end until that point.
Running the install-pkgs.sh script should install all the fonts
required to build the PDF.

Hello, everyone.

This is just a friendly reminder that 31 May is the deadline for

place.

If you have any questions, have encountered problems, or don't think
that you'll be able to complete your assigned sections on time, please
email the list and we'll try to help.
