[Ubuntu-manual] p18: Specifying partitions manually

2010-03-31 Thread Yann Ubuntu
Dear all,

The following paragraph is incorrect:

"It can also be used to create a separate /home partition. This can be
very useful in
case you decide to reinstall Ubuntu, as it allows you to format and reinstall
the operating system, whilst keeping all your personal files and program
settings intact in a separate partition."

Explanation: Since Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, it is possible to reinstall Ubuntu
keeping /home folder intact, even if the /home is inside / . You just
have to partition manually and set / in the old / partition (and keep
the same login/password, and same file format). For those who
understand French, see http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/reinstallation_ubuntu.
I don't know where the English equivalent is. (if needed I can
complete the English wiki, just tell me).

So if you want to talk about separate /home, I propose the following :
"It can also be used to create a separate /home partition. This can be
useful in case you use several GNU/Linux distributions on the same
computer, allowing you to share the same personal files and program
settings between them."

By the way, the most frequent use of manual partitionning IMHO is for
creating dual-boot, when the default dual-boot options are not
satisfactory. I think to mention it would be more usefull for beginers
than the separate /home.

Regards,
Yann - ubuntu-fr team

[Ubuntu-manual] p20 warning on crypted home folder

2010-03-31 Thread Yann Ubuntu
Concerning the warning p20:

If you choose this option, be careful not to enable automatic login at a later

potentially lock you out of important files.

for my own information, is there a Launchpad bug filled for this ?

Could we put it on the previous page ?

Yann, that is amazing. I knew that previously Linux wouldn't let me
install without repartitioning the hard drive. I'll have to try this
out. Thanks!

Google Translate does a good job of converting the article to English;
too bad it's blocked in my country (but Google Chrome manages to get
around this automagically with its built-in translator interface).

Re: [Ubuntu-manual] p18: Specifying partitions manually

2010-03-31 Thread Jamin Day
Can anyone confirm this? It makes sense I guess, as if you elect not to
format the partition it wouldn't need to overwrite your home folder,
although I would like to try it first with a dummy virtualbox install.

Yann, although your suggestion may improve the original statement, it
is *technically
*not incorrect as it stands (it still does allow you to easily reinstall
without touching /home), so we will probably leave as is for this release.
We'll check it out and maybe re-visit for 10.10 release.

Thanks for the info,

JaminDay

On page 143, the method of package management 'apt-get' is used, while the
package management section starting from page 127 is using aptitude.

There was a discussion in the wiki team which to use and they came to the rule:
use apt-get. It would be a very strange move for the manual to use aptitude
instead.

I know this is a controversial subject, but I think that for the sake of
consistency between manual and wiki, the manual must use apt-get.

I would like to give people a try using ubuntu
but I fear to setup some trouble for them if they use win7.
This isssue is described here:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gparted/+question/99298
It is a MS related partitioning bug.

To get around there are 3 ways possible:

C) Most easily: You typically purchased a notebook where there are 3 primary
partitions. Ubuntu Release Notes should mention that in case of dual boot you
should only create one primary root partition not any more ! (no swap, no home,
no further extended)

B) A more sophisticated approach: Since Vista Windows needs a megabyte free
space just in front of every first primary partition and a megabyte free space
in front of every first logical partition in every extended partition.
Partition your disk accordingly or give Windows7 Partitioniong Tool a try to
configure your harddisk appropriet for a linux install (more easy?)

C) Feature request: make linux partitioning tools feature a windows7 compatible
mode.
