New motherboard not supported by Ubuntu

2008-06-02 Thread Thomas Novin
Hello

I bought a new motherboard a couple of weeks ago and ever since I have
+3 mins of bootup time and also my DVD reader/writer isn't available at
all.

The bug has been triaged but after that nothing seems to have happened.
Anyone with a suggestion for a fix / workaround?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/230077

Thanks!

This is a brand new mobo model? I'd say you're in luck it works at
all. Myself, I didn't always have this luck.

Does suspend and/or hibernate work better? Shutting down a computer
completely is so last century ;-)

As for the fix - well, you're invited to narrow down the source of
the problem yourself. Try with different options of the Install-CD's
F6 menu, locate the point of trouble, recompile the corresponding
piece of software, debug it ...

No, not really. It's almost 6 months now, first BIOS release date is 2007/12/14.

Suspend isn't an option for me since the power to the room where the
computer is located is cut every night.

Hibernate I have tried though and I have exactly the same problems there
(resume from Hibernate takes as long as a normal boot).

Ok, I'll try to find out was much as I can from there.

Seconded.

But before you do all that, contact the motherboard manufacturer and
let them know that Linux users buy their products too. If we don't let
the manufacturers know that we exist, how can we expect them to
support our OS?

What motherboard did you buy? Without model numbers, it is difficult
to make anything but the vaguest suggestions.

Yes I have. I got the idea earlier today so I haven't received any
answer yet.

I'm not sure what the status of this is, as I haven't encountered the
situation in a while, but previously when 403 errors were issued, I
had people coming to me in bafflement. update-manager didn't seem to
give a potential explanation for the error (and there is surely very
little chance it could be anything else). Perhaps an explanation could
be added to save users' confusion?

I also recall a fair number of bug reports regarding 403 errors when a
package has been removed from the archive and think a notification in
update-manager would be helpful.

I have this board, and while I haven't tried suspend/hibernate, this board has
perfect Linux support, with a few quirks, as follows:
* For some reason it is not possible to boot from a SATA CD device connected to
the Intel SATA controller, if the Intel SATA controller is in AHCI mode.
* To boot the live CD, I have to have my CD drive on the JMicron controller,
with the Intel controller set to disabled in BIOS, which makes it behave like
an IDE controller. The JMicron controller still works in AHCI mode however. I
believe this will be fixed in the kernel soon, if it isn't already in 2.6.25+.

I used the alternate CD to install, as both my controllers are set to AHCI mode.

Hope this helps.

I got some complaints about it though: it doesn't tell users what the
advantages and disadvantages of those plugins are.

(Being free is nice, but if a plugin doesn't work 90% of the time,
that's worthless for most end-users...)

FWIW, this (among other issues) was discussed at UDS and is now
documented as one of the things that is likely to be fixed to in intrepid:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FlashExperienceIntrepid

Remember that this document is a draft. Discussion welcome.
