[Bug 116696] Re: network manager ppp doesn't support evdo/gprs/umts data cards

2008-07-26 Thread phoenix
will network manager 0.7 support umts data card connections by default?

currently I am connecting via umtsmon, but this is not a very good solution
because you need internet connection to get it...
for people who only have umts internet, like me , this is a MAJOR issue!

[Bug 252713] [NEW] virt-manager has lack of keyboard layout option, thus renderin clients unusable

2008-07-28 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

The virt-manager shiped with Hardy has no option to set the keyboard
layout of the kvm system, thus when you fire up your windows (or
probably something else) you end up with some exotic keyboard, where you
can't type usefull keys like "\:= - and if available habe to hunt for it
all the time. Virtualization for non-default keyboards with Hardy is
broken.

I now of patches, that add the option to the XML of the virtual maschine
specification for libvirt, but I don't know of patches that enable the
option within libvirt.

Virtualization was a big selling point for Hardy and it's really sad to
have it shipped in such a broken way...

[Bug 225785] Re: using default encrypted LVM settings with 1.5 TB disk makes huge swap space

2008-07-28 Thread Phoenix
I have exactly the opposite problem.

I installed a 8GB drive (CF Card) into my System, after and choose also
"entire encrypted drive", upon boot I tried to hibernate, which failed
with "not enough swap space" - I can't remember the value of the swap
space (200MB?), but I had to manually configure the partitioning of swap
and system to make it work in an notebook environment.

[Bug 252715] [NEW] Encryption key insertion delayed upon startup

2008-07-28 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

I just created a crypted "entire disk" setup on Hardy. Now when I
startup the system it asks for a password, my keyboard is connected via
USB, the USB drivers get loaded with some delay (background loading or
whatever) - thus when entering the password I have to pay attention that
the asterisks appear... after say 5-10 seconds delay I can type without
troubles.

If possible it would be nice to have USB loaded at the time the
passphrase is asked.

This is easily verifiable by booting in single mode (softlevel=single),
where the prompt appears and you after some seconds see USB messages
messing the screen... unfortunately you don't see any asterisks there at
all.

[Bug 253270] [NEW] Getting Shares working not as smooth as expected

2008-07-30 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Lately I once again walked they was of using a GUI to condigure a
"share" in nautilus. The Installation is a fresh hardy, though I changed
the permissions in /home so that different users can't see others home.

After creating the share I was asked if I want to install the service,
which I confirmed, but the Share could not be created as I didn't had
permission to write to the configuration file - the trouble is, that the
service added the usershare group, which I was suddently added to, but
was not effective until I did re-login.

After that, I tried again, and was told, that the permissions do not
work, that the world needs access to the folder and I got prompted if
nautilus should solve it, which I confirmed, but the Dialog stayed, that
the permissions do not work - some chmod's on a terminal finally got it
to work.

All in all it does work, but some things are not as smooth as it could
be.

Hi Mike

Indeed bug 212098 addresses my initial issue of not having up to date

to log out.

I'll check the sharepermissions once again, to see if further shares
also have similar behaviour.

Thanks

[Bug 375371] [NEW] MySQL must not use /tmp

2009-05-12 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

I noticed that the my.cnd points the tmpdir to /tmp, which IMHO might be
fatal.

>From the MySQL site:
If the MySQL server is acting as a replication slave, you should not set
--tmpdir to point to a directory on a memory-based file system or to a
directory that is cleared when the server host restarts. A replication slave
needs some of its temporary files to survive a machine restart so that it can
replicate temporary tables or LOAD DATA INFILE operations. If files in the
temporary file directory are lost when the server restarts, replication fails.
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/temporary-files.html

>From the FHS:
/tmp/ Temporary files (see also /var/tmp). Often not preserved between system
reboots.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_Hierarchy_Standard

It might even be, that Ubuntu clears /tmp.

Anyhow, /tmp can be considered lost upon system restart - any file that
should survive a system restart belong to /var/tmp

/var/tmp/ Temporary files to be preserved between reboots.

so please consider
tmpdir=/var/tmp

I dunno if apparmor needs to be adjusted, but I guess I will soon find
out...

[Bug 237424] Re: Evolution forgets webcal passwords, and web calendars are not displayed on the gnome-clock-applet

2009-01-27 Thread Phoenix
Great, they decided to switch to keyring, where the reason was to not
store the password cleartext in some file, but to have it encrypted -
but it's now that much broken, that users are going to enter it in the
frontend, where it is shown to anyone when show him your settings (or
how to connect to the calendar).

This is not only a regression, this weakens security instead of
strengthen it...

[Bug 277667] Re: PAM configuration prone to mis-configuration

2009-01-27 Thread Phoenix
You have to see, that by default a Ubuntu authenticates against the
local shadow database - but you might want to authenticate against ldap,
samba, mysql, radius, whatever - you might even want to fallback and
have special handling for User "0". To configure such a thing is
involves complete arcane magic!

There is a Tool called gufw, which manages ufw, which in turn handles
iptables - because iptables involves lesser complete arcane magic... All
I like to see is some sort of "gpam-configuration", where I can handle
the system PAM settings without going mad.

[Bug 388506] [NEW] udev 60-persistent-storage.rules vol_id cancels hdd spin-down

2009-06-17 Thread phoenix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

My secondary hdd (not mounted) did not go into standby and spun up again
right after a "hdparm -y /dev/sdb" command.

the cause is /lib/udev/vol_id beeing executed on a change action caused
by this rule in /lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules:

# probe filesystem metadata of disks
KERNEL!="sr*", IMPORT{program}="vol_id --export $tempnode"

which causes an access to the hdd _after_ a spin-down event -> hdd spins up
again
(My hdd model: SAMSUNG HD103UJ (Spinpoint F1, 1TB))

KERNEL!="sr*", ACTION=="add", IMPORT{program}="vol_id --export $tempnode"

[Bug 229839] Re: [jaunty] [gvfs] [samba] OpenOffice isn't integrated with gnome-keyring

2009-02-24 Thread Phoenix
Meanwhile, on Jaunty, when I open the document first time, it's read only.
The second time it opens read-write
But I can't save the document, as it throws an "General error". So that' s how
daily work is

You navigate via nautilus to the file, try to open it, have to enter
username password (meanwhile no longer required for me), naturaly try to
edit the file, get the error, that the file is read-only, close, reopen
the file, editing the file, naturaly try to save it, get the error, have
to save it on desktop, after finishing (yes, I save my file regulary
until I'm finished...) I have to point my nautilus to the desktop and
move the file to the network location - now assume you do that 50 times
a day. o(this is the point where I would regularly write in capital
letters what PITA stands for)

Folks, this is a serious bug - it can't be that I can't access a file
over a mounted share like any other file - it's rubbish to argue that
this is something like a "wish" to work as any other person on this
planet does like clicking on the network based file, open it, modifying
it and then safe it there without having to enter credentials every
time, opening it twice and to save it on the desktop and then move it to
it's original location.

If you don't understand the impact of this bug, then you don't use
ubuntu to do daily work with documents in a more-then-just-having-files-
on-the-local-harddisk basis.

cheers
Philipp

[Bug 229839] Re: [gvfs] [smb] OpenOffice isn't integrated with gnome-keyring

2009-02-24 Thread Phoenix
Well, if you take a look at the file-size of OOO, which is depending on
the platform, but WAY above 100MB, then I can figure why this fat piece
of code doesn't fly

Anyhow, the "map network drive" refers IIRC to map a drive letter to an
UNC Path, that's:

X: points to \\myserver\myshare

So you actually don't "browse" the network and open it via something
like in linux terms as smb://myserver/myshare/mydocument.odt, but as a
semi-local thing like ~/.gvfs/myserver/myshare/mydocument.odt

It is well known, that those network paths break severeal applications,
as they can't handle it

Actually I can check, if OOO on XP will behave as noted here, and if
time allows I will do so.

Out of frustration I checked out GNOME-Office again... at least file
opening and saving works like a charm there :)

[Bug 284651] [NEW] owner of shared public folder is nobody

2008-10-16 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

I have a folder named ~/public which I want to be shared and writeable
by anyone, so I create in nautilus the needed settings and I can access
the folder from remote and write files into it, everything fine. But on
the host, where the files have been written to, they files are owned by
the user "nobody", which renders the user unable to use the files as if
they were his, like deleting the files. If the files would be owned by
the user everything would be fine.

[Bug 44335] Re: IMAP/POP3+SSL/TLS are disabled

2008-10-16 Thread Phoenix
The as yet current release does AFAICS not satisfy that the patch can not be
applied, thank you GPL - Anyhow, to remove further IMHO childish discussions
with the author of this software, I simply recommend to rename the the package,
apply a Patch that renames the whole software. Finito. I would vote for
"FreeMailNotification" - Free like in Freedom of course.

[Bug 284651] Re: owner of shared public folder is nobody

2008-10-17 Thread Phoenix
Sorry if I'm missleading, no, currently files are owned by the user
nobody and the primary group of the user taht created the directory -
probably because the directory that is shared is user and group owned by
the user. What I want is, that new files are owned by the user you have
to see:

I share as "Public" my "/home/me/Public

now if someone puts some files into it, then I can open them, but I
can't delete them - as I'm not the owner of the files, I have to get
root and chown thoses files or access my local filesystem via samba to
delete thoses files, either way is not quite straight forward.

[Bug 277667] [NEW] PAM configuration prone to mis-configuration

2008-10-03 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Imagine Ubuntu Linux in a business environment.

I'm not pretty much a fan of Windows, but there is one thing that works
pretty neat, centralized authentication and disconnected operation.

I want PAM to Authenticate against my favorite network authentication
method, if that is not successfull fall back client cached credentials
and finaly to local authentication.

that is done by installing libpam-ccreds and libpam-
mysql|ldap|anothernetwork authentication.

The real hard part is to get pam.d configured, it's PITA, you have to
have multiple terminals open in case you mess it up and you have to go
through all the test-cases I really am kinda in love with text
files, I edit my bind configuration files by hand, but like a sendmail
configuration - the configuration of pam is evil, the module
configurations are legion and not always documented or at least
documented in a way a mere mortal understands it - last but not least,
debugging PAM is - ah, it drives me nuts.

pam-auth-update is a step in the right direction, but there is, I bet, a
real need for some kind of frontend to get this PAM working in a way you
want it, bullet proof.

[Bug 277687] [NEW] A good network file system

2008-10-03 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

This bug is to some sort related to bug #1

Imagine a world with linux servers and clients - you do need a network
filesystem.

NFS, it's a pain to get through the firewall and it's insecure, if you
want to secure it you are forced to Kerberos and this is in turn way to
complicated, stubern and just ugly... to get started with...

SAMBA is just a pile of bugs... no really, I fear every minor version
upgrades, as things fall appart, it's noisy on the network, it's log is
just pain... I hate it it has too much in common with Windows it
feels like Windows.

I want a filesystem, that is secure in terms of communication, that has
support for disconnected operations like coda is supposed to have, that
is firewall friendly, network friendly and last but not least, sys-admin
friendly.

Further it has to be flexible against which service it
authenticates/authorizes (hello PAM?)

I haven't dug into it as much as I like to, but SHFS looks pretty
nice... for now, but it lacks disconnected operaions.

Anyhow, the disconneted operations thingy might be something that can be
abstracted - CacheFS comes to mind, but it has to be able to be
configured to say which directories are to be in sync.

[Bug 255700] [NEW] There is no package for fwknop and fwknopd

2008-08-07 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

There is no package for fwknop and fwknopd

fwknop stands for the "FireWall KNock OPerator", and implements an
authorization scheme called Single Packet Authorization (SPA). This
method of authorization is based around a default-drop packet filter
(fwknop supports both iptables on Linux systems and ipfw on FreeBSD and
Mac OS X systems) and libpcap.

http://cipherdyne.org/fwknop/

AFAICS this is has to be splitted like openssh-client and openssh-
server, it provides a great security enhancement for server admins, as
they can have certain ports closed while not in use and only open them
when needed, like ssh access or web-ui access to raid-controllers .

[Bug 44335] Re: IMAP/POP3+SSL/TLS are disabled

2008-05-25 Thread Phoenix
The trouble is, that the current package deliberately transmits
passwords in clear text - so I wouldn't worry too much about reputation.
In it's current state this piece of software is a potential security
risk, as users are encouraged to transmit passwords in cleartext - in
these days, support for cleartext should be disabled and not vis versa.

I never understood debian's political issues about certain stuff - like this
one, hunderts of debian packages have no trouble linking against a next-to core
library, but one maintainer thinks the world turns around him and has to
interpret some licensing other way round last but not least it might be a
french and IIRC does the french gov disapprove of encryption anyway.
"France is the only Western European country which does not allow a free use of
encryption on its territory." - but it's just a wild guess.

IMHO it's rather simple, as ubuntu != debian, and the licensing issues
are no issues, so let's compile the software with ssl support.

GnuTLS Support would be in this case not needed, but it does not hurt to
have it, does it? My abilities a rather limited to "./configure; make;
make install" - so if some brave soul could give AZ a hand, he would be
grateful - last but not least, ubuntu might even give it to upstream,
which might be even appreciated and once debian would fetch the gnuTLS-
patched version, they might even considering

[Bug 312212] Re: What is "system setting" in network manager and why is there no documentation?

2009-01-02 Thread Phoenix
The wording is not really usefull or intuitiv. it should be something
like "establish connection upon system start". But then a user has to be
aware that there are connections that are established upon boot-up and
other upon login.

IMHO you have to remove the "Auto "-Prefix, otherwise changes don't get
safed.

This is all well documented in the WiKi Mentioned in the Answers article
- but why is there no inline help and but a poor system help?

Please forgive me, but bad wording, that no user understands and missing
documentation qualifies for me as a bug.

[Bug 284298] Re: MASTER cannot save "auto" connection without renaming the connection

2009-02-04 Thread Phoenix
I have created wired connections from scratch and I am not able to save
"system setting"

Furthermore, NM nowhere says, that an "Auto" connection can not be
modified, while it is true it is total obfuscation and can not be known
by not digging some internet resource.

Anyhow, your answer does not state if you can't rename an Auto
connection and thus migrate it into a regular connection - if this is
possible, than I can still not apply "system setting" to my wireless
connections and if not than it is a terrible design, by providing a drop
down menu to choose a wireless network but if you want to have it system
wide to make me type in the SSID by hand.

[Bug 325378] [NEW] Ibex GNOME 2.24 worst release ever

2009-02-04 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome

This GNOME release included in Ibex is the worst I've seen so far.

I'm sorry to open a bug, but I don't know where to say such a thing else
where.

- Evolution Calendaring is broken due to Keyring transformation
- Open/Save File Dialogs are inconsistent and do partly not allow to access
network resources
- UserSwitching produces garbadge on screen (ATI fglrx driver)
- NetworkManager is far from sane
- MailNotification uses cleartext to transmit passwords
- translation to gvfs breaks things horribly (like fonts://, samba bookmarks,
dav Access)
- OpenOffice asks for credentials when opening a file from a samba server and
refuses to save the file with "General I/O error"

These are bugs, that schould have been noted by any Beta, not to mention
RC

Please, give me back a system where I don't go mad by just doing regular
daily tasks.

[Bug 321199] [NEW] networkmanager does not verify input

2009-01-25 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Networkmanager is not very polished in regard of configuring the manual
ipv4 settings.

it requires 2 mouse clicks to enter the needed data, after clicking add,
you enter the IP - but there is no way to enter the netmask and then the
gateway without grabing the mouse - which is a little bit uncomftable.
But the input is not really verified which both screenshots show:

1st screenshot displays an ip/mask/gateway of 999.999.999.999 each -
admited, you just can cancel and not save/exit the dialog, but there is
no information why the dialog does allow the setting - shure, 999 seems
obvious...

Please, if consider to notify the user, don't(!) get inspired by Windows
and do some pop-up, rather make a baloon or some extra space in the
dialog the points to the problem.

The second screenshot show the combo "1" "2" "3" - that is not catched
at all and allows the user to exit the dialog, as I don't know what
would happen when I exit the dialog I didn't dare to save the changes.

Furthermore, after changing the wired settings, you have to apply them
by reconnecting to the wired network - this might be considered a
feature, but I expected that when I change a static IP that it get's
applied the moment I close the dialog

[Bug 321902] [NEW] Networkmanager can't disconnect wired, wireless and dsl connections

2009-01-27 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Networkmanager is now able to have multiple network connections online,
but there is now way of tearing a connection down or disconnnect a
connection. In my setup, my office, I'm able to connect via the low
speed wireless or the high speed wired network, which leads to
situations, where both networks interfaces are up - and as I do assign
static IPs, both interfaces receive the same static ip.

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet
  inet addr:192.168.170.251 Bcast:192.168.170.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

eth1 Link encap:Ethernet
  inet addr:192.168.170.251 Bcast:192.168.170.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1

Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric RefUse Iface
192.168.170.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 1 00 eth0
192.168.170.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 2 00 eth1

There is now way of tearing down the wireless connection but to either
push the radio-switch on the notebook or disable wireless in
NetworkManager, but neither is desired - I simply want to disconnect
from a network, but not disable the networking at all.

This situation is far from odd, when I go to the meeting room I use
wireless, but at the desk I use wired networking.

Philipp

[Bug 316845] [NEW] unison fails to sync with directory create error

2009-01-13 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

I encounter the following problem:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=428960

The problem and workaround is dokumented in the Unison Wiki, though no
fix yet exists.

Furthermore I encounter the chmod() Problem, where the sync reports that
it can't set the permission on files.

This renders the tool next to unusable and unreliable.

Please also note, that according to the unison web site is unison no

[Bug 310930] [NEW] Firefox asks several time for proxy authentication when started up and restoring session

2008-12-23 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Following scenario

- You need to authenticate against the proxy server to access the internet
- You have several tabs open with sites open in it

You now close the browser (shutting down the PC, whatever...), next time
you start up firefox session restore recreates all the tabs with the
pages in it - this is desired.

Unfortunately every tab asks for proxy authentication - meaning, you
have 20 tabs, you authenticate 20 times - or don't use session restore
feature

Furthermore, to emulate SSO (Single Sign On) the Extension "AutoAuth" is
installed, which does not kick in at that time.

Desired fixes:
- only ask once for proxy authentication
- make AutoAuth work for the initial authentication or make it possible to
submit the credentials automatically (store it somehow in the browser)

[Bug 310932] [NEW] Network mounts (smb) stop working after idle time

2008-12-23 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I have a two Samba Servers, one on Suse 11 and one on FreeBSD and Ubuntu
Desktop shows the same problems.

I have some Network Resources bookmarked. When I need to access a
certain place, I simply use the bookmark, which works fine and a Shotcut
is created on the desktop, which also works great. After idleing around,
I like to access the network share again but the shortcut on the Desktop
errors out, so does the bookmark - the errors are attached.

I have to unmount the resource and access it then via the bookmark
(abviously as the desktop shortcut gets removed) and can happily access
the network resource.

Desired effect: - I like to access my Samba Server independently of how
much time passed meanwhile

[Bug 310940] [NEW] Mounting a DAV resource fails with http error

2008-12-23 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

I like to mount a DAV resource.

First trouble is that the resource is only reachable via https, which is
workaroundable by editing the bookmar and extend the dav:// by davs://

But the share still does not work, as the resource
"davs://server/davfolder" generates a 301, as the leading slash is
missing - other clients like cadaver just go on and issue the request
with a trailing slash, but gnome/nautilus stops and errors out.

[Bug 327127] [NEW] Authenticate to make connection to all users does not work

2009-02-09 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

I just tried the old "System Setting" in network-manager for jaunty,
which now vanished, but I stumbled upon "make available to all users".

It would be nice to know, if this makes the connection brought up upon
system boot or after the login.

But I was unable to make it happen, as it requires to authenticate to
save the setting, but authentication does not fire up.

I can reproduce the bug, by simply marking the checkbox, which
transforms the "Apply" Button to an "Authenticate" button, which in turn
does nothing when clicked.

[Bug 327306] [NEW] Apache segfaults under load and can't span more than 130 childs

I'm in process to configure an apache under ubuntu 8.10 to catch some
serious load. To test the server I run "ab" with -n 10 -c 1. I
saw apache childs segfault and was wondering why I never saw more than
about 130 childs

I then stumbled over this article:
https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=46467
which suggests:

echo 1024 > /proc/sys/fs/epoll/max_user_instances
where 1024 is some value larger than MaxClients, then it works.

Further information:

[Bug 325690] Re: udev has wrong name for devmapper devices, cryptsetup initramfs hook fails

2009-02-22 Thread Phoenix
In some earlier versions of the ubuntu installer, it was possible to

So I have a partition of sda1 and sda5, where sda1 is /boot and sda5

2.6.27-11-generic is the latest kernel, where cryptsetup is still working,
config-2.6.28-8-generic does not offer to enter an ecryption key and thus fails.

The 2.6.27-11 fails on setting up the lvm part, so I have to do that in
the initramfs (busybox?) shell with

- kvm> lvchange -ay /dev/mapper/swap

[Bug 212098] Re: "easy" file sharing not notifying about logout/login

2008-08-29 Thread Phoenix
Nautilus runs as "me" and needs to write the share data into the
following place:

drwxrwx--T 2 root sambashare 4096 2008-07-28 21:05
/var/lib/samba/usershares

But this place is only writable to "sambashare" members, which I do not
belong until I relogin.

It does not matter if you have some application running as 'me' to know
that I am authorized to write there, it would require something that has
the priviledge to write into this place, which is either a suid command
or a daemon.

Suid commands are evil and should be avoided, so a little process would
be required that has the persmissions to write there and handle the
authorization.

The question about the process is, if it is an advisable way, as you
don't want to have for every little thing a running process lying around
and wasting your precious resources.

The very best way would be, if linux could handle group memberships
dynamically, but as Chris stated this is a very hard way to take, as it
would require to change things the way they worked for decades - but it
would be a very nice feature, that would be quite handy not only for
samba but possibly other things!

Another way would be extended attributes, which would allow the adm AND
the sambashare members to write to the directory, but you might want to
get some further input before you decide that you want to go fore
extended attributes, as they are for example not handled by some
applications like tar and probably nautilus and may quickly become as
messy as the file permissions fiasko of this other OS mentioned in bug
#1.

>From my viewpoint you have 3 basic choices:

1: Inform the user, like you do that Firefox needs restarting and reboot due to
kernel updates, that he has to logout as he got a new group membership, this
way, the users knows that to do and has not to handly cryptic error messages
until he finds out by accident to do a re-login.
2: Do some framework, daemon, suid, extended attributes, which may give you
some work, maybe more than expected and lead into unwanted troubles.
3: Implement dynamic group memberships - as mentioned, this is the hardest
possible way, as it requires probably fundamental changes (I dunno).

* Imagine: You would have a Client Desktop and a Linux Fileserver, and
you need access to something, but you don't have the access rights - so
you call your sysadmin for the permissions to access that file, that
mailfolder or whatever, of course the sysadmin would check if you are
entitled to get access, but for the examples sake would give you the
permissions by adding you to the group 'X' to access to precious
files/mail/whatever. Now, what today is well known is that the user has
to close all running applications and re-login to make the
groupmembership happening. If linux would overcome this, it would be
quite something!

[Bug 298389] Re: Synaptic hangs when trying to save prefrences

2009-03-24 Thread phoenix
Confirmed on Intrepid x86_64

Could someone Please, please fix this?

since my synaptic now hangs up every time I try to reset my
proxy settings to "No proxy", this is VERY important for me,
not "undecided"

I also have the bug that the switch is on "No proxy" and still
synaptic tries to use a proxy, which, as was said before,
makes synaptic Unusable!

So please set the importance to at least medium, so that someone cares
to fix it

[Bug 195698] Re: Password asked separately for each tab that requires it

2009-08-09 Thread Phoenix
Dialog Boxes are evil - why can't the request be done like the one for
invalid certificates?

In older version of FF a dialogbox jumped when a certificate was
invalid, meanwhile this is done within the tab - same could be done for
basic auth requests - so a auth request wouldn't block the browser, nor
would it be irritating in the event of multiple simultanous requests.

[Bug 195698] Re: Password asked separately for each tab that requires it

2009-08-09 Thread Phoenix
Yes, the login would appear like a form login - just like the cert thing
behaves like an AJAX form. Multiple Windows and Pop-Ups are bad Browser
Design - it was fine in the days, where users just served one page at a
time, but tabbed browsing was the start of recognizing that users are
surfing multiple pages at a time, where dialog boxes in pop-up form of
any kind are bad usability. As of know, there are about 2 browsers that
share the most userbase, where one browser is not really known for being
innovative not standard compliance, so I have no troubles is FF would be
first cleaning up this issue.

[Bug 398709] Re: Shortcut/Bookmark via Places doesn't work

2009-07-13 Thread Phoenix

You missed the point, the samba server does not need to be a local
installation, it isn't in my case either. And to access a remote folder
might not be the first thing you do as a average private user, but as an
average business user you do. And remote folder access support is a
default install feature of nautilus, isn't it?

So all I do:
* opening my nautilus (file-browser), point it to smb://myserver
* clicking Bookmarks/Add Bookmark
* closing nautilus
* clicking on the ubuntu logo in the upper left
* moving my mouse onto Places/Windows shares on myserver and clicking on it
getting the error

[Bug 44335] Re: IMAP/POP3+SSL/TLS are disabled

2009-07-29 Thread Phoenix
As bug reporter of bug #132947, who notified Ubuntu Security about the
issue, I can barely express myself, as English is not my mother tongue,
how poorly this issue is handled - YEARS passed by. Everyone is
laughting at Microsoft when it takes them 10 months to fix severe
security issues, but seeing this bug, I can well imagine why it takes so
long.

If I were so, and I was, about building packages everytime myself, I
would use Gentoo, Slackware or any BSD - but Ubuntu is a binary
distribution, therefore I like to have a binary delivered. I want
something that just works.

It needs someone to get it done on a political basis - either by fixing
the issue or removing the piece of insecure code.

[Bug 71348] Re: Dom0 crashes upon start of second DomU

2006-11-15 Thread Phoenix
IIRC I once managed to also have two DomU's and having the third crash
my system, but can't remember how I managed that.

This is my CPU, AFAICS it has HT support, but either I deactivated it in
the BIOS or it's not active for other reasons - but haven't changed that
ages ago, so IMHO my issue is not HT relatead.

AFAICS the DomU Kernels do not cause the crash - IMHO it does not matter
what kind of DomU Linux you start, only the Dom0 Kernel matters. It
might even not matter if the DomU is Linux - anybody tested with BSD? (I
don't have a current CPU :(, thus no VX support)

[Bug 144710] Possible Upgrade Problem Encounters Feisty->Gutsy

2007-09-25 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Dear reader

I own two desktop installations where I bravely upgraded from feisty to
what is to be gutsy, most of it went very smoothly, thow there are some
minor things worth mentioning.

- On one maschine I had the LANG env variable not set, I guess I hosed
something... anyhow, if this is the case, then the upgrade can't be
done, as the upgrade tries to connect to "http://.archive";. This might
be catched in the respective pythong script with a fallback to the main
archive, though it wouldn't solve the root of the problem.

- One maschine is mostly connected via wireless, thus if the nm-applet
(network manager) isn't working I have a hard time (or have to plug it
into wired network - as I'm to lazy to manually configure the wlan
stuff) - it happened during upgrade that after the download of the
packages finished and the setup begun that the applet vanished, and this
network reachability. It came back to service after a reboot, which was
also suggested from the upgrade-procedure.

- It happaned to me, that when doing one upgrade that the Window Manager
vanished, which was a little bit scary and IIRC some applets also
crashed during the upgrade - but that also wasn't much of an issue, as
it all worked after the reboot. (I basicaly had a screen where only the
panel and the package-manager was left)

I assume, that as long as the package-manager doesn't crash or
something, things will be okay - but if for some reason the upgrade does
not complete, I don't know if the system would be in a state to
reinitiate the package-manager to finish it's job.

[Bug 132946] sabayon gconf restrictions are unmaintenable

2007-08-16 Thread Phoenix
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sabayon

It is not possible to change a gconf setting from default to mandatory
or the other way, as neither the package editor provides this feature
nor does the changes window list the setting upon launch of the session.

Furthermore does it seems that the "enforce mandatory setting" does not
work in the way I understand it should work (it should enforce or lift
the restrictions - so the sessions get's into a state where the admin
gets access to restricted items)

Also for some reason the "alacarte" settings, which say which menu items
are visible or not does not work at all - though I dunno if this is a
gconf thing.

In the "lock" row I have bronze and silver shields - they change upon
click, but I found no documentation what which mean.
