[Bug 301306] [NEW] Install did not work; I had not yet set the FQDN, and it did not handle that graciously.

2008-11-23 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: inn2

Install did not work; I had not yet set the FQDN, and it did not handle that
graciously.
Instead of the install process crashing, can the user be prompted to supply the
missing Fully Qualified Domain Name on the spot, after which the installer can
retry?

[Bug 252439] Re: Network file transfer stalled

2008-11-28 Thread Jay
Hi. I have upgraded to the most recent kernel available to me (2.6.27.9)
and the problem still persists. Transferring a large file > 2 GB pretty
much always fails, but synchronizing two dirs with > 10.000 files is
also bound to fail. (Transfers made over SSH, via Krusader, FISH
protocol)

[Bug 327661] Re: brightness controls on Lenovo Thinkpad x61 broken in linux-image-generic 2.6.27-11.27

2009-02-25 Thread Jay
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 311716 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/311716

** Description changed:

The brightness controls on my Lenovo ThinkPad x61 (model 7675-CTO)
running Ubuntu 8.10 on amd64 are broken in the latest intrepid update
kernel (2.6.27-11.27). Neither using g-p-m via the volume fn-keys nor
  manually manipulating /sys/class/backlight files works.

Brightness controls worked in 2.6.27-9.19, the previous kernel I had
  installed.

Booting with `acpi_backlight=vendor' as suggested in lp:311716 results
in video corruption (diagonal black lines across the screen in X) and
still does not fix brightness controls.

Re: [Bug 255658] Re: disk-manager crashed with IOError in copyfile()

2008-10-30 Thread Jay
Hi,

I'ev submitted the bug without knowing exactly what is going on, and
what is involved. I am running a 32-bit Ubuntu 8.10 (I "got in" at the
alpha 5 stage). The machine I used ut with is Intel T7300 based
(64-bit capable, dual core, SATA hard drive, Lenovo ThinkPad X61).

That's all I know I'm afraid. Thanks for mailing the developer.

Best wishes,

Jerom

Hi All,

I don't think I have actually had this error for some days now. The
machine it occurred on has to be changed to a 64-bit install, if the
error resurfaces I'll let you know.

Nice detective work Brian Murray. I have just done a clean install of
8.10 64-bit from an ISO image, and the problem is gone: it has not
occurred after the last reboots. Could it be that the problems we
have/had are residual from the alpha releases?

Re: [Bug 255658] Re: disk-manager crashed with IOError in copyfile()

2008-10-30 Thread Jay
Is there anybody that has done a clean install with today's final
release for whom this is still a problem in the fresh install? (Please
mention if you have an NTFS partition, and if you use the 32 or 64 bit
OS)

[Bug 252439] Re: Network file transfer stalled

2008-10-24 Thread Jay
Hi. I am using the most recent kernel available to me (2.6.27.7) but the
problem persists. Transferring a large file > 2 GB pretty much always
fails, but synchronizing two dirs with > 10.000 files is also bound to
fail. (Transfers made over SSH, via Krusader, FISH protocol)

[Bug 293722] Re: Bad manpage for ctorrent

2009-01-07 Thread Jay
Hi Dustin,

I have made the changes to the ctorrent.sgml file. Attached is debdiff.
Note that upon building the package I got debsign errors which I
circumvented with -us -uc. I'm new at this so I'm not sure if it
matters at this point.

Thanks, Jay

[Bug 316772] [NEW] No completion in vim by using the -u option

2009-01-13 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vim

Bug :

If i launch vim like this :

$ vim

Then i could use completion like this, eg:

: vn[tab] gives me: vnew

BUT if i launch vim like this :

$ vim -u .vimrcNN
or even with
$ vim -u .vimrc

Then i could NOT use completion like this, eg:

: vn[tab] gives me: vn^I

It is very very very painful when you get the habit of Tab-completion
and when you want to use the -u option for specific coding with extra
VIMRC file.

[Bug 330155] [NEW] Wishlist : Enhance evince with a "note creator"

2009-02-16 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

It could be an amazing feature to have the possibility to create note
(like post it) for each page of a document, it would enhance the use of
pdf.

I don't know "how to", maybe not direct in the file, but something as a
cache or a db, or maybe a file with the same name and with .evnote as an
extention... Could be great to share things and thougth...

Of course active url and things like bold/italic/strike etc... would be
much more confortable, but at least a simple editor page per page would
be really awsome...

Thanks for adding this to the whishlist...

[Bug 268402] [NEW] Ubunutu Fails to Load on ACER 1690

2008-09-09 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

I have a customer that has installed Ubuntu 8.04 on his ACER 1690
(laptop) as his only OS. He reports this has worked for a while, aprox 1
month, but now the OS will not load with the Battery installed, the
system boots to the splash screen with the progress bar but the progress
indicator stops and Ubuntu will not load. With the battery removed, the
system will load to the login window and will allow the user to log in,
will play the Ubunutu startup music, but then shut off (hard, no power,
requires cold boot). This is also true when trying to boot to an Ubuntu
or Xubuntu 8.04 live CD. However, the unit will boot normally in
recovery mode.

[Bug 402984] [NEW] Firefox and xulrunner language pack not in good version

2009-07-22 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I had install a fresh ubuntu 8.04, I'm french and firefox displayed in
english, so i install the language-pack-gnome-fr-base, thus it stayed in
english (even after shutdown, reboot, reopen...).

The addons windows told me (not compatible with firefox 3.0.11, the
french pack had version 3.0b5 and french xulrunner 1.9b5...

I decided to reinstall the pack, the same, i did

apt-file show language-pack-gnome-fr-base

And it is the package wich gives :
language-pack-gnome-fr-base:
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/langpack...@firefox-3.0.ubuntu.com/chrome.manifest
language-pack-gnome-fr-base:
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/langpack...@firefox-3.0.ubuntu.com/chrome/fr.jar
language-pack-gnome-fr-base:
/usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions/langpack...@firefox-3.0.ubuntu.com/install.rdf
language-pack-gnome-fr-base:
/usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/extensions/langpack...@xulrunner-1.9.ubuntu.com/chrome.manifest
language-pack-gnome-fr-base:
/usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/extensions/langpack...@xulrunner-1.9.ubuntu.com/chrome/fr.jar
language-pack-gnome-fr-base:
/usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/extensions/langpack...@xulrunner-1.9.ubuntu.com/install.rdf

So i tried to install direct the good xpi from the ftp of mozilla, it works...

Please update the package.

[Bug 147551] Re: cups-pdf fails to generate file when user does not print to default ~/PDF (apparmor vs.cups-pdf inconsistency)

2009-08-13 Thread Jay
Sorry I haven't got the time to read the rest,

What about changing /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.cups like that :

 @{HOME}/PDF/ rw,
 @{HOME}/PDF/* rw,

by that :

 @{HOME}/ rw,
 @{HOME}/** rw,

Anybody can set up his output as he wants in /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf

And everything's okay.

[Bug 218042] [NEW] misc feedback

2008-04-15 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 beta KDE4.
There are over 300 updates upon install.
I think these are "security" and not "new stuff".
Wow. Not worth regenating the .isos for?

I got the Broadcom wireless working, wow, what a huge pain.
True, the huge pain includes trying and failing to get it
working with Fedora Core 8, not your fault.
And yes, licensing.
If the device was already working under Windows, why is
the firmware still needed? It is uploaded every reboot or something?

My network connection always dies after some not
very long time.
e.g. with 30 updates left to download of the initial 300+.
e.g. part way through a cvs update. I'll have to try piecemeal. Ugh.

Other computers on the same network running Windows
can keep a network connection much longer, "forever".

The only way I have found to restore it is reboot.
Which has worked every time so far.

It is too difficult to have empty passwords.
I am behind a firewall. I don't need passwords.

Everything is beautiful, far more pretty than needed.
Making things so blue is bad for the eyes.
Brown is ugly, but blue is unhealthy.

I want a plain basic black desktop.
It seems I can only have "EOS".

The start/windows key doesn't work.
That's just crazy.
How many decades is that going to take?

The editor kate is the best I have found for Linux,
without a ton of looking, but still.

When I click the "updates are available" thing at the bottom of the
screen, Adept is way too slow to come up.
I think it came up and disappeared.
I tried again and I got an error about "sudo not knowing
the user"; maybe something to do with me enabling root, with
an empty password, or something?
This sudo stuff is like Vista UAC -- annoying.

This is on an AMD64 laptop Compaq R4000, 1.5gig, / is 18% used.
I somewhat manually partitioned, since I didn't want to use the whole disk.
There is not "automatic, use up to a certain size".

I'm up late with people sleeping nearby.
The machine keeps making pretty noises.
The volume buttons don't work.
The volume control in some settings thing might have worked
but certainly not across a reboot.

Linux gets ever better, and still lags incredibly far behind.
I'm attempting to use it to provide software for some other people,
but I can't see why/how anyone would "really" chose to use it.

Maybe these are all "beta" problems?
Maybe I should try 7.10?
Or maybe Xubuntu for something with less unnecessary flash.

I like KDE, but prefer Firefox.
Not sure how to bridge that gap. Dilemna.
KDE tries to be this big integrated environment, and it is mostly
good, so seems reasonable to give its web browser.
I don't trust Apple besides, and I associate Konquerer with Apple.
Esp. to run the same browser on Unix and Windows.
I'll try apt-get install firefox.

when you right click on the desktop to hunt for how to
get rid of the unhealthy blue background, the drawing of that
menu is a bit glitchy.

http://www.ubuntu.com/community/reportproblem
comes up empty, hm.

http://www.ubuntu.com/community
same problem, but

http://www.ubuntu.com

works ok. I'll probably hotmail this feedback over to Windows,
or try Firefox. Confirmed: empty in Konquerer, works in Firefox.

I don't have the time to break this down into a bunch of
bug reports, sorry. Or register for yet another forum area.
Ok, I registered to report a bug.

I haven't tried to watch a DVD yet..
This is basic scenario that Linux has failed many times in the past..

[Bug 218055] [NEW] Broadcom wireless is a pain to get working

2008-04-15 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

Broadcom wireless is a pain to get working.

I got it working, but wow that sucks.
It should just work out of the box.
It seem's Fedora Core 8's kernel doesn't have the driver enabled, and their
kernel seems to resist configuration, and a new kernel failed to boot, so you
are better than them, but that's not saying much..

[Bug 218053] [NEW] desktop effects immediately broke everything, hard to recover from

2008-04-15 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

Compaq R4000 laptop, 1.5gig, / is 19% in use.
Hardy Heron 10.4 beta KDE4 AMD64

Enable desktop effects.
That crashed everything somehow and brought back to login screen.
And then the screen started going funny, cycling through colors,
corrupt display.

Power cycled.

Login would fail, after the icon progress was almost done.

Logged into failsafe session.
After quite some poking around, nothing much in forums or man
pages, finally found ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc and
disabled compositing there.
Ok now.

Wow, this sucks.

[Bug 218091] [NEW] adept hangs configuring java

2008-04-16 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

adept cannot install sun-java6-bin or somesuch
it hangs in the middle with a prompt
that cannot be answered in the gui
That the gui doesn't show unless you "show details".

You have to kill whiptail to proceed.
Twice. That seem to maybe accept the license.

adept also hangs installing some PLT stuff,
but that prompt, once discovered, can be
answered; this one is about a web server

As well, I think as part of this hang,
  I couldn't run x86 stuff for a while,
  and went looking for /lib/ld-linux.so.2.
Once I pushed install along, it came back.

oh, another, I had already installed kubuntu-restricted
yes, apparently a package name, not a repository
now I've added ubuntu-restricted, which seems to have an
   identical description
anyway, configuring msttcorefonts
brings up a prompt about defoma
the debian font manager
This one I can dismiss by pressing enter.

It seems the gui handles some of the console interactions
done by package configuration, but not all.

all this configuration should happen up front, not hang in them middle,
whether the gui works or not.

Wow. This is all very disappointing. I would not even call this beta.

Hardy Heron 10.4 beta KDE4 AMD64, with like every
suggested update already installed (the network connection
dying seems to have gone away)

[Bug 218190] [NEW] upgrading breaks networking, due to Broadcom firmware

2008-04-16 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

upgrading breaks networking, due to Broadcom firmware

Specifically:
install 8.4 Hardy Heron AMD64 beta KDE4 on Compaq R4000 laptop
go to all the trouble of getting wireless Broadcom networking working
  apt-get upgrade
  reboot as prompted
perhaps because I installed some extra packages, like linux-xen
  networking stops working

This is because there's a new kernel and the modules don't get
copied/linked over.

Ok, that wasn't too hard to fix.
Windows doesn't have this bug, not for minor updates at least.

RE: [Bug 218055] Re: Broadcom wireless is a pain to get working

2008-04-17 Thread Jay

Mine didn't work until I got the firmware in place, and then I when apt-get
upgrade and update, I got a new compiler, firmware had to be copied/linked into
new directory.

Lots of documentation talks about the firmware, the firmware cutter,
etc.

Huh?

I'll have to try again some time...though machine working pretty ok now...

[Bug 219413] [NEW] double clicking upper left of windows doesn't close them

RE: [Bug 219413] Re: double clicking upper left of windows doesn't close them

2008-04-19 Thread Jay
The upper left, not the upper right.
This is what it does on Windows. I use it all the time.
Surely I'm not the only Windows users who thinks KDE strives to be like Windows
and is bothered where it misses?

I don't like the horizontally scrolling start menu in KDE4 either but obviously
that was deliberate.
With it this way, I can't say where I came from and learn the difference
between e.g. "system" and "settings" which seems strange...
Oh well.

RE: [Bug 219412] Re: start/windows key does nothing

2008-04-22 Thread Jay
Yuri, Have you never used Windows? The key when used on its own was added
/specifically/ to bring up the start menu. I'm pretty sure.It still works as a
modifier, Windows and KDE both implement start-r as "run". Windows has a few
others like start-e for Explorer. Most of them aren't well known. Its use as a
modifier does not interfere with its use standalone. Pushing it down doesn't do
anything. Only upon the release does the start menu come up, giving you a
chance to push another key to be modified. The overwhelming use of the key is
for the start menu. I never previously realized it was a modifier used for
anything and I failed to realize that windows/start-r is actually that.

Anyway, it's obvious what it should do.
The negative reactions to this bug i expected were more like "agreed. but no
time, low priority, punt a while", or "keyboards vary too much punt to hal", or
nothing at all. I am impressed with your guys' responsiveNESS to bugs, but not
your actual responses. To actually justify that the current behavior is
correct..

Not fixing this bug would be quite disappointing.

2008-04-22 Thread Jay
> KDE does not strive to be like Windows, it just tries to be a good desktop

Those are approximately the same thing.
Ok, yes, if you can improve on Windows, all the better, but first you should be
as good as Windows.
You are getting close in some ways..Windows isn't really the fastest moving
target, you don't really have to do much more than NT4 did over 10 years ago,
plus a few features from after it like PlugNPlay, built in DVD player, CD/DVD
writer, photo management, modern web browsers, wireless, 1394, USB, friendly
login, actually Windows 2000 from 9 years ago is a good target, or the slightly
better XP from 7 seven years ago...

Based on your tip...I was using OpenSuse for a bit..and found how to switch the
start menu style, thanks.
And then XUbuntu briefly, was disappointed (e.g. a) KDevelop didn't appear on
start menu, and b) I couldn't figure out how to add it myself, I can run it ok,
I don't depend on start menus really but for it to be so difficult to figure
out how to edit the, disappointing), added KDE to it, got the wizard (Kandalf?)
that Kubuntu had skipped, chose "Redmond" style/style and boy does it look nice
and familiar, seriously. I'm not into eye candy but there is some amazingly
positive subtle effects to looking so much like Windows..

The setting Daemon crashed too many times.
GNOME will try to restart the settings Daemon next time you log in."

Using Hardy Heron Alpha5.

[Bug 201742] Re: libc6 failed to upgrade

2008-03-13 Thread Jay
Instead of 403 I got 404 errors

After searching some mirrors I found a packet named
"libc6-amd64_2.7-9ubuntu1_i386.deb" instead of
"libc6-i386_2.7-9ubuntu1_amd64.deb" (see: http://ftp-stud.hs-
esslingen.de/ubuntu/pool/main/g/glibc/). Perhaps there is somewhere a
typo because "amd64" and "i386" are changed in the packet name...

[Bug 538516] Re: slapd package configuration aborts due to "ordered_value_sort failed on attr olcAccess" error during Hardy -> Lucid upgrade

2010-03-29 Thread Jay
As I commented earlier, I belive this is the same bug as in karmic,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openldap/+bug/450645.

Will this be fixed so you can dist upgrade an ldap from jaunty -> karmic
-> lucid ... or will this remain broken for karmic ?

Thanks,

Jay

[Bug 318325] Re: [X1100] flickering after resume from ram

2010-05-07 Thread Jay
I can also confirm that this "workaround" that Id2ndR posted does work
in Lucid. What I did, until this bug is fixed, is created a bash script
that runs on startup that executes that command. It's a horrible waste
of CPU cycles... but hey, the screen isn't flickering.

The bash script, called stop-flicker.sh, looks like:

#!/bin/bash
while true ; do echo "toto" > /dev/null ; done

I then gave the script execute privileges:

sudo chmod +x stop-flicker.sh

And finally I added a custom startup application, System -> Preferences
-> Startup Applications -> Add

I called this application Stop Flicker and gave it the command
/home/$user/stop-flicker.sh

Where $user is your user name...

This is hacky... but it works. Please fix this bug soon!

[Bug 493328] Re: SD / MS Pro / MMC / SM / XD card reader doesn't automount or generate a device under /dev or /media

2010-02-19 Thread Jay
This bug appears to be caused by an incomplete driver.

According to this page:
http://openfacts.berlios.de/index-en.phtml?title=TI_FlashMedia_xx12/xx21_driver
the driver is implemented as a set of modules, tifm_xd being one of them.
However, the page states that tifm_xd was in the early stages of development in
September 2007 and it hasn't been updated since so I'm not sure of the current
status.

This is consistent with the problem I see, I have a Texas Instruments 5-in-1
Multimedia Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD) as follows:
   *-storage
description: Mass storage controller
product: 5-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD)

capabilities: storage pm bus_master cap_list
configuration: driver=tifm_7xx1 latency=57 maxlatency=4 mingnt=7
resources: irq:20 memory:c8302000-c8302fff

When I insert an SD card /var/log/messages says this:

There appear to be quite a few duplicates of this bug with the same and
other hardware, I'm new to launchpad and fairly new to ubuntu so I'm not
sure how to go about marking these duplicates or judging which are
considered duplicates, so it's difficult to tell how many people this
affects at the moment. I'd be happy to assist if anyone can point me in
the right direction.

Apparently, on some vnc client Alt-Gr works (directvnc for example vnc
via framebuffer), maybe it's a probleme from the vnc client not the vnc
server.

RE: [Bug 219412] Re: There should be a more discoverable way to open kmenu from the keyboard

2009-09-20 Thread Jay

This is a great example of why Linux is awful for interactive/gui/desktop use.
Ok that it wasn't perfect years ago when I opened it.
But then refusal to improve it in the blindingly obvious way.
I gave up long ago and use Linux only for remote command line use with a wired
network.

[Bug 450645] Re: Problem install slapd

2009-12-10 Thread Jay
I've just had the same experience.

I ran slapd in heavy trace mode and it seemed to be complaining about
and olcAccess attribute - I resolved thiss down to

r...@netsrv01:/etc/ldap/slapd.d/cn=config# cat
/etc/ldap/slapd.d/cn\=config/olcDatabase\=\{0\}config.ldif | grep \{
dn: olcDatabase={0}config
olcDatabase: {0}config
olcAccess: {0}to * by * none
olcAccess: to * by dn.exact=cn=localroot,cn=config manage by * break

---

I think it isn't happy with access rules with no number, so to add the
number, I edited the confilg file entry to the following :-

olcAccess: {1}to * by dn.exact=cn=localroot,cn=config manage by * break

I can then sucessfully start slapd.

It does however appear to read the /etc/apt/apt.conf file.
Adding the authentication details there appears to have fixed this issue for me.

Do you think this is a bug or bad DVD drive or bad DVD brand?

[Bug 538516] Re: slapd package configuration aborts due to "ordered_value_sort failed on attr olcAccess" error during Hardy -> Lucid upgrade

2010-03-24 Thread Jay
I think this is a repetition of

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openldap/+bug/450645

Other bug has been assigned low importance - this is a major problem and has
been around since karmic.

Be good to see some resolution of the various ldap issues in ubuntu at
the minute.
