[Bug 218042] [NEW] misc feedback
Public bug reported: I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 beta KDE4. There are over 300 updates upon install. I think these are "security" and not "new stuff". Wow. Not worth regenating the .isos for? I got the Broadcom wireless working, wow, what a huge pain. True, the huge pain includes trying and failing to get it working with Fedora Core 8, not your fault. And yes, licensing. If the device was already working under Windows, why is the firmware still needed? It is uploaded every reboot or something? My network connection always dies after some not very long time. e.g. with 30 updates left to download of the initial 300+. e.g. part way through a cvs update. I'll have to try piecemeal. Ugh. Other computers on the same network running Windows can keep a network connection much longer, "forever". The only way I have found to restore it is reboot. Which has worked every time so far. It is too difficult to have empty passwords. I am behind a firewall. I don't need passwords. Everything is beautiful, far more pretty than needed. Making things so blue is bad for the eyes. Brown is ugly, but blue is unhealthy. I want a plain basic black desktop. It seems I can only have "EOS". The start/windows key doesn't work. That's just crazy. How many decades is that going to take? The editor kate is the best I have found for Linux, without a ton of looking, but still. When I click the "updates are available" thing at the bottom of the screen, Adept is way too slow to come up. I think it came up and disappeared. I tried again and I got an error about "sudo not knowing the user"; maybe something to do with me enabling root, with an empty password, or something? This sudo stuff is like Vista UAC -- annoying. This is on an AMD64 laptop Compaq R4000, 1.5gig, / is 18% used. I somewhat manually partitioned, since I didn't want to use the whole disk. There is not "automatic, use up to a certain size". I'm up late with people sleeping nearby. The machine keeps making pretty noises. The volume buttons don't work. The volume control in some settings thing might have worked but certainly not across a reboot. Linux gets ever better, and still lags incredibly far behind. I'm attempting to use it to provide software for some other people, but I can't see why/how anyone would "really" chose to use it. Maybe these are all "beta" problems? Maybe I should try 7.10? Or maybe Xubuntu for something with less unnecessary flash. I like KDE, but prefer Firefox. Not sure how to bridge that gap. Dilemna. KDE tries to be this big integrated environment, and it is mostly good, so seems reasonable to give its web browser. I don't trust Apple besides, and I associate Konquerer with Apple. Esp. to run the same browser on Unix and Windows. I'll try apt-get install firefox. when you right click on the desktop to hunt for how to get rid of the unhealthy blue background, the drawing of that menu is a bit glitchy. http://www.ubuntu.com/community/reportproblem comes up empty, hm. http://www.ubuntu.com/community same problem, but http://www.ubuntu.com works ok. I'll probably hotmail this feedback over to Windows, or try Firefox. Confirmed: empty in Konquerer, works in Firefox. I don't have the time to break this down into a bunch of bug reports, sorry. Or register for yet another forum area. Ok, I registered to report a bug. I haven't tried to watch a DVD yet.. This is basic scenario that Linux has failed many times in the past.. - Jay ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- misc feedback https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218042 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 218091] [NEW] adept hangs configuring java
Public bug reported: adept cannot install sun-java6-bin or somesuch it hangs in the middle with a prompt that cannot be answered in the gui That the gui doesn't show unless you "show details". You have to kill whiptail to proceed. Twice. That seem to maybe accept the license. adept also hangs installing some PLT stuff, but that prompt, once discovered, can be answered; this one is about a web server As well, I think as part of this hang, I couldn't run x86 stuff for a while, and went looking for /lib/ld-linux.so.2. Once I pushed install along, it came back. oh, another, I had already installed kubuntu-restricted yes, apparently a package name, not a repository now I've added ubuntu-restricted, which seems to have an identical description anyway, configuring msttcorefonts brings up a prompt about defoma the debian font manager This one I can dismiss by pressing enter. It seems the gui handles some of the console interactions done by package configuration, but not all. all this configuration should happen up front, not hang in them middle, whether the gui works or not. RE: [Bug 219413] Re: double clicking upper left of windows doesn't close them
The upper left, not the upper right. This is what it does on Windows. I use it all the time. Surely I'm not the only Windows users who thinks KDE strives to be like Windows and is bothered where it misses? I don't like the horizontally scrolling start menu in KDE4 either but obviously that was deliberate. With it this way, I can't say where I came from and learn the difference between e.g. "system" and "settings" which seems strange... RE: [Bug 219412] Re: start/windows key does nothing
Yuri, Have you never used Windows? The key when used on its own was added /specifically/ to bring up the start menu. I'm pretty sure.It still works as a modifier, Windows and KDE both implement start-r as "run". Windows has a few others like start-e for Explorer. Most of them aren't well known. Its use as a modifier does not interfere with its use standalone. Pushing it down doesn't do anything. Only upon the release does the start menu come up, giving you a chance to push another key to be modified. The overwhelming use of the key is for the start menu. I never previously realized it was a modifier used for anything and I failed to realize that windows/start-r is actually that. Anyway, it's obvious what it should do. The negative reactions to this bug i expected were more like "agreed. but no time, low priority, punt a while", or "keyboards vary too much punt to hal", or nothing at all. I am impressed with your guys' responsiveNESS to bugs, but not your actual responses. To actually justify that the current behavior is correct.. Not fixing this bug would be quite disappointing. - Jay > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sat, 19 Apr 2008 23:30:09 +> Subject: [Bug 219412] Re: start/windows key does nothing> > That is a good point. RE: [Bug 219413] Re: double clicking upper left of windows doesn't close them
> KDE does not strive to be like Windows, it just tries to be a good desktop > environment. Those are approximately the same thing. Ok, yes, if you can improve on Windows, all the better, but first you should be as good as Windows. You are getting close in some ways..Windows isn't really the fastest moving target, you don't really have to do much more than NT4 did over 10 years ago, plus a few features from after it like PlugNPlay, built in DVD player, CD/DVD writer, photo management, modern web browsers, wireless, 1394, USB, friendly login, actually Windows 2000 from 9 years ago is a good target, or the slightly better XP from 7 seven years ago... Based on your tip...I was using OpenSuse for a bit..and found how to switch the start menu style, thanks. And then XUbuntu briefly, was disappointed (e.g. a) KDevelop didn't appear on start menu, and b) I couldn't figure out how to add it myself, I can run it ok, I don't depend on start menus really but for it to be so difficult to figure out how to edit the, disappointing), added KDE to it, got the wizard (Kandalf?) that Kubuntu had skipped, chose "Redmond" style/style and boy does it look nice and familiar, seriously. I'm not into eye candy but there is some amazingly positive subtle effects to looking so much like Windows.. - Jay > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Sun, 20 Apr 2008 12:53:54 +> Subject: [Bug 219413] Re: double clicking upper left of windows doesn't close them> > KDE does not strive to be like Windows, it just tries to be a good desktop environment.> And there are 2 menus available in KDE4, "Application Launcher" and "Application Launcher Menu", use the "Application Launcher Menu" if you don't like the default.> > -- > double clicking upper left of windows doesn't close them> https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219413> You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber> of the bug.> > Status in KDE Base Components: New> Status in Source Package "kdebase- workspace" in Ubuntu: Confirmed> > Bug description:> Kubuntu 8.4 Hardy Heron beta KDE 4 AMD64> all updates/upgrades (as of April 18 2008)> > double clicking upper left of windows doesn't close them, as it does on Windows, which KDE very very very strongly resembles> I poked around the configuration briefly, but it was WAY too flexible and scary> This isn't supposed to be for advanced users, right? ** Attachment added: "unnamed" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/13832566/unnamed -- double clicking upper left of windows doesn't close them https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219413 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The bash script, called stop-flicker.sh, looks like: #!/bin/bash while true ; do echo "toto" > /dev/null ; done I then gave the script execute privileges: sudo chmod +x stop-flicker.sh And finally I added a custom startup application, System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Add I called this application Stop Flicker and gave it the command /home/$user/stop-flicker.sh Where $user is your user name... The bash script, called stop-flicker.sh, looks like: #!/bin/bash while true ; do echo "toto" > /dev/null ; done I then gave the script execute privileges: sudo chmod +x stop-flicker.sh You could execute this every time your screen flickers... but instead I added a custom startup application, System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> Add I gave it the name Stop Flicker and gave it the command /home/$user /stop-flicker.sh Where $user is your user name... This is hacky... but it works. [Bug 493328] Re: SD / MS Pro / MMC / SM / XD card reader doesn't automount or generate a device under /dev or /media
This bug appears to be caused by an incomplete driver. According to this page: http://openfacts.berlios.de/index-en.phtml?title=TI_FlashMedia_xx12/xx21_driver the driver is implemented as a set of modules, tifm_xd being one of them. However, the page states that tifm_xd was in the early stages of development in September 2007 and it hasn't been updated since so I'm not sure of the current status. This is consistent with the problem I see, I have a Texas Instruments 5-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD) as follows: *-storage description: Mass storage controller product: 5-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD) vendor: Texas Instruments physical id: 9.2 bus info: p...@:0a:09.2 version: 00 width: 32 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: storage pm bus_master cap_list configuration: driver=tifm_7xx1 latency=57 maxlatency=4 mingnt=7 resources: irq:20 memory:c8302000-c8302fff When I insert an SD card /var/log/messages says this: Feb 19 20:32:17 turk kernel: [11887.220081] tifm_core: MMC/SD card detected in socket 0:1 Feb 19 20:32:17 turk kernel: [11887.370285] mmc1: new MMC card at address 0001 Feb 19 20:32:17 turk kernel: [11887.373017] mmcblk0: mmc1:0001 16M15.3 MiB Feb 19 20:32:17 turk kernel: [11887.373112] mmcblk0: p1 and the card is mounted at "/media/Memory Card", when removing the SD card: Feb 19 20:32:27 turk kernel: [11896.592155] tifm0 : demand removing card from socket 0:1 Feb 19 20:32:27 turk kernel: [11896.592226] mmc1: card 0001 removed and it is unmounted.
