Opening VS Code, particularly folders, causes the Vala-panel-appmenu to
have segment fault on xfce4 and in the case of Budgie ends the entire
user session as the budgie-panel cannot handle it. Backporting commits
from 0.7.5 into the current release appears to fix the issue, I believe
fossfreedom also backported another commit to aid in building the source
properly.

The crash log of Budgie-panel caused by vala-panel-appmenu has been

* Any potential issues with this upload is strictly limited to the package
itself - there will be no regression in any other components since the package
(per desktop) is self contained.

all the patches have been identified and cherry-picked and potentially there
could be a further regression causing panel instability.
- * To mitigate this I have carefully reviewed the commits released since
0.7.3 was released by upstream and I haven't identified any commits

- * The worse case scenario is that the global menu for a users desktop will
have to be removed by the user if any additional regressions are identified

Tested 0.7.3.2+dfsg1-1ubuntu0.1 on Groovy.  Installed deb version of
VSCode, opened a folder.  Panel OK.  Opened libreoffice - global menu
invoked various options ok.  Switched back to VSCode - all ok.  Tried
Aislerot, GNOME Calculator, Suduko.  All ok.

Suggest this is verified ok.

Public bug reported:

in the package gnome-desktop3 there is a custom ubuntu patch that tries
to write to the draw-background key that has now been removed in
gsettings-desktop-schemas 40.0-1ubuntu1

All packages that depend on the gnome-desktop3 library now crash such as
budgie-desktop

Suggestion - either re-add the patch again ... or revert the gnome-
desktop3 custom patch.

The latter option changes the symbols so probably I'm guessing a so-name
version bump is needed and any dependent packages need a rebuild?

I'll try to locally rebuild gnome-desktop3 without the custom ubuntu
patch to see what happens with budgie-desktop

Just a follow-up - so recompiling budgie-desktop with a rebuilt gnome-
desktop3 bumped with a so-name of 20 stops budgie crashing.  There are
other issues - but highly likely because a other packages need to be
rebuilt with the bumped so-name package version.

Yeah  - from the info you have provided it looks like budgie is taking
its primary screen resolution for the window maximize calculation on
the secondary window.

This is a bug that needs to be reported to the Solus upstream github
issue tracker (if it already hasn't been).

FYI - works as expected under UB

ok - under UB - I saw the restart button after installing.  Clicking on
it restarted UB - then I saw updates installing via plymouth on a reboot
... it rebooted again and there are no more updates.

Note - for UB our default is not to have updates via gnome-software (we
hide by overriding the org.gnome.software updates key - we use Ubuntu's
software updater

I am not sure why this is marked as opinion. I can confirm that
discussing with various Canonical staff back in April last year, the
mechanism used to uplift to the snap would be blocked if gnome-software
was a dependency not a recommendation. We did this for 20.04 and works
through upgrades to 20.10 and 21.04

Mike - just wondering if this is an ibus issue - UB has had various
people confirm that the following seems to fix/help -

gnome settings -> region&language and there, click on “manage installed
languages” then changed “keyboard input method system” to none instead

+ the menu item to the text string.  This visually looks strange.  The
+ submenuitem should be fixed spacing via a tab-character rather than
+ based on spaces i.e. a space character sizing changes depending on the
+ theme being chosen.

+  The impact is for Ubuntu Budgie only and anyone running the budgie
+ desktop together with the Showtime applet.

   “popup menu for usb drives”-applet can occasionally become stuck on its
  popup position and cannot be closed without logging out and logging back
  in.

   1. Using Budgie Settings, check that on a panel that the DropBy applet has 
been added - please note, the dropby applet is installed through the package 
"budgie-dropby-applet"
   2. Insert a USB pen-stick
   3. A popup window will appear on the panel - this is the drop by applet
   4. Dismiss (close) the popup window by clicking elsewhere on the desktop 
i.e. move the focus away from the popup window
   5. Repeat steps 2,3 and 4 several times.  In each and every time the popup 
menu should be dismissable.
  
  [Regression Potential]
  
   * The worst case scenario is that the panel applet does not correctly
  start or function correctly when a USB stick is inserted.  This can be
  mitigated easily by removing the panel applet via Budgie Settings or
  uninstalling the applet via command line/ Software Center
  
   * The OP who raised this has tested this for a week and verified the fix in 
a test PPA
   * Ubuntu Team has independently verified that the fix works by constantly 
checking the test case repeatedly.

Public bug reported:

Testing todays (7th Sept 2018) of cosmic.

Using virtualbox.  Set to boot the ISO using EFI option.

Select Try Ubuntu option from ISO Grub.

Expected to see the live session.  Instead saw the login window.  I had
to login using ubuntu-budgie / ubuntu-mate to see the live session.

Tested both Ubuntu Mate and Ubuntu Budgie

I'm running Pocillo theme at scale 100% and no overlap when the top-
panel is switched to left - then a window is maximised.

Suggest remove applets one by one to see if any applet is displaying an
oversized icon that is pushing the panel size artificially out.

Do check also that the panel size is  not too small - most themes
require the panel to be 37px to 51 px in size.

Yeah - 1:0.28.2-5ubuntu4 should be the package version of libvte - so I
guess you must have installed a PPA with a later version.  You should
have purged the PPA first before installing budgie

artifacts when windows are opened and closed.

The issue is due to changes made in mutter 3.30 and later.

Probably safer to leave as is until the budgie SRU is agreed.

     Recommend repeat the above for 10 reboots or more after budgie-desktop is 
upgraded

  [Regression Potential]
  
   * Issue 1: Due to the nature of the crashes observed (unexplained
  crashes in glib, wnck libraries), it is highly unlikely that this fix
  alone will resolve all polkit issues.  In terms of regression the number
  of "system error" prompts with a polkit headline after a reboot and
  login will be either the same or reduced - but such messages can be
  ticked by a user via the system error dialog to not appear again.
  
   * Issue 2: The likelihood of regression is negligable since the
  handling of custom keys is now how the maintainer of gnome-settings-
  daemon recommends (upstream https://github.com/solus-project/budgie-
  desktop/issues/1763).  In any-case, there is a potential that custom key
  handling will still occur to be not available after a reboot, requiring
  a user to continue using the current workaround of logging out and
  logging in again.
  
   * Issue 3: The only regression here is that raven remains open during a
  workspace switch.  This is thought highly unlikely from the code review
  undertaken.

ok - decided to reopen this.

Have retested todays release candidate ISO

For this laptop - I did not connect via a wired connection.

I did choose the restricted drivers option in the installer and during
the installation I saw that it said it installed the bcmwl-kernel-source

On restart no wifi was available.

I connected via wired and ran sudo apt install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-
source and immediately after completion wifi was available.

I repeated the whole installation again as above and again no wifi was
available after an install.

Attached is the installer syslog file found in /var/log/installer

[Bug 1821820] [NEW] Cannot boot or install - have to use nomodeset

On this 19.04 beta I have to use nomodeset to boot & install Ubuntu
Budgie.

This is different behaviour from 18.04 and 18.10 where it booted and
installed just fine without nomodeset.

Without nomodeset, grub/efi disappears, and after a while a solid rather
than blinking cursor on a black screen is seen.  It does not boot into a
live session, nor displays the ubiquity window

[Bug 1821823] [NEW] No wireless networks displayed for broadcom BCM43142

Public bug reported:

For 19.04 UB did a minimal install.  I selected the ubiquity proprietary
option and expected the broadcom driver to be found and installed.

On reboot I could not see and wireless networks.  I went to the
Additional Drivers window and it stated that the computer was indeed
using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver and was in use.

This is a regression - in both 18.04 and 18.10, the same steps also
installed the driver, and wireless networks were found and could be
connected to.

Odd.  That was already installed.

I then ran a apt --reinstall install for that package and this time
wireless started.

Thus it appears the kernel module wasn't successfully installed by
ubiquity?

Sorry - I havent had the time yet to see what happens with this patch
(revert_volume_calc) on Disco - but for bionic, this revert patch
resolves the animation issues for bionic

Note - I couldn't get a simple git revert of the commit to apply  - too
many changes in this file I guess with the other cherry-picked commits.
