2021-03-01 Thread fossfreedom
That looks like the default Pocillo theme. The separator is
deliberately not visible in the default theme with a light background
since it spoils the overall look.

[Bug 1930104] [NEW] GNOME 40 (GDM) prevents GNOME Screensaver from locking

2021-05-28 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Budgie and Budgie Desktop uses GNOME Screensaver for its lock-
screen.

GNOME40 with GDM now grabs the Screensaver dbus entry that GNOME
Screensaver previously utilised.

This prevents GNOME Screensaver from working i.e. provide its locking
capability.

To resolve this requires a patch to kill the GDM spawned process
releasing the dbus grab.

All of this is explained in the dep3 headers of the debdiff patch
attached

dell-canonical-estar-logo

Your distribution has been setup by dell and uses a package that already
overrides the ubuntu-logo-icon

You'll need to uninstall whatever that package is that provides the icon
for your distribution - or install ubuntu budgie itself.

[Bug 1930615] Re: VS Code crashes Vala Appmenu - patch included

2021-06-03 Thread fossfreedom
I'll tidy up the patch and will submit it for consideration for the
stable release series.

Note - a patch will be needed for both 20.04 and 20.10 since vala-panel-
appmenu is similar (but not quite the same)

Hirsute is not impacted since the upstream fixes are in the hirsute
release.

+
+ This occurs with the v0.7.3 series of appmenu uploaded to focal and

  [Where problems could occur]

   * Any potential issues with this upload is strictly limited to the package
itself - there will be no regression in any other components since the package
(per desktop) is self contained.
- * As to the package itself - I suppose the worse case scenario is that not
all the patches have been identified and cherry-picked and potentially there
could be a further regression causing panel instability.
- * To mitigate this I have carefully reviewed the commits released since
0.7.3 was released by upstream and I haven't identified any commits
specifically in this area of code that has been patched.
- * The worse case scenario is that the global menu for a users desktop will
have to be removed by the user if any additional regressions are identified
over and beyond the issues being fixed.
- * Additional mitigation of the risks are the additional regression tests
added to the test plan to cover a broader range to application types beyond the
Qt apps crash issue being fix

Tested 0.7.3.2+dfsg1-1ubuntu0.1 on Groovy. Installed deb version of
VSCode, opened a folder. Panel OK. Opened libreoffice - global menu
invoked various options ok. Switched back to VSCode - all ok. Tried
Aislerot, GNOME Calculator, Suduko. All ok.

Suggest this is verified ok.

[Bug 1931901] [NEW] Revert background key patch removal breaks dependent packages

2021-06-14 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

in the package gnome-desktop3 there is a custom ubuntu patch that tries
to write to the draw-background key that has now been removed in
gsettings-desktop-schemas 40.0-1ubuntu1

All packages that depend on the gnome-desktop3 library now crash such as
budgie-desktop

Suggestion - either re-add the patch again ... or revert the gnome-
desktop3 custom patch.

The latter option changes the symbols so probably I'm guessing a so-name
version bump is needed and any dependent packages need a rebuild?

I'll try to locally rebuild gnome-desktop3 without the custom ubuntu
patch to see what happens with budgie-desktop

Just a follow-up - so recompiling budgie-desktop with a rebuilt gnome-
desktop3 bumped with a so-name of 20 stops budgie crashing. There are
other issues - but highly likely because a other packages need to be
rebuilt with the bumped so-name package version.

Re: [Bug 1933636] Re: App Maximize to the left/right side of the screen ON second display

2021-06-30 Thread fossfreedom
Yeah - from the info you have provided it looks like budgie is taking
its primary screen resolution for the window maximize calculation on
the secondary window.

This is a bug that needs to be reported to the Solus upstream github
issue tracker (if it already hasn't been).

[Bug 1916711] Re: 'Restart & Update' in 'Software' application does nothing in Xubuntu

2021-04-10 Thread fossfreedom
FYI - works as expected under UB

ok - under UB - I saw the restart button after installing. Clicking on
it restarted UB - then I saw updates installing via plymouth on a reboot
... it rebooted again and there are no more updates.

Note - for UB our default is not to have updates via gnome-software (we
hide by overriding the org.gnome.software updates key - we use Ubuntu's
software updater

[Bug 1922157] Re: Depend on gnome-software to prevent upgrade to snap-store-desktop

2021-04-16 Thread fossfreedom
I am not sure why this is marked as opinion. I can confirm that
discussing with various Canonical staff back in April last year, the
mechanism used to uplift to the snap would be blocked if gnome-software
was a dependency not a recommendation. We did this for 20.04 and works
through upgrades to 20.10 and 21.04

[Bug 1904278] [NEW] [SRU] Uplift to upstream v3.36.3.1 microrelease

2020-11-14 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

Upstream have released v3.36.3.1 which includes a CVE security fix
together with bug-fixes for this v3.36 series

Proposed changelog
- Fixed handling of pinned, invalid TLS certificates: CVE-2020-24661
- Build bug fixes
- Client library now installed to private lib sub-directory
- Allow downstream packagers set their package's version number
- Numerous bug fixes and user interface improvements
  * drop existing patches except for Bump-client-test-timeout-to-300s.patch
which has been refreshed to remove fuzz.
  * Bump-client-test-timeout-to-300s.patch - add same timeout for engine
tests to allow slower architecture builds to complete
  * d/control.in - update maintainer to Ubuntu Developers
  * d/control.in - remove Debian specific build dependency firmware-linux-free
  * Update build rules based on v3.38 bullseye package
- d/rules drop --as-needed from linker flags (no longer needed in bullseye)
- d/rules strip Ubuntu -Bsymbolic-functions, the tests are failing otherwise
  * d/rules add CHECK_HOME statements for test build to resolve test failures
due to dconf permission denied noise

Test build: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntubudgie-dev/+archive/ubuntu
/geary-test/+packages

TBD - add SRU template

Currently the build fails on armhf and arm64 - possibly this issue?

It appears that your distro already has an override for ubuntu-logo-

I've never seen what this distro is - its certainly not something we
have tested against.

I'm marking this as invalid - it doesn't appear to be a valid Ubuntu
Budgie distro that you are upgrading from.

gnome settings -> region&language and there, click on “manage installed

[Bug 1771606] Re: [SRU] Fix budgie panel hang when USB inserted

- easily determinable.
+ A number of issues have been raised since the 18.04 release. As part of
+ ongoing 18.04 support the Ubuntu Budgie Team proposes to wrap up fixes
+ on a very targeted basis. In this series of SRU's we have wrapped up
+ DR's that have been classified as LOW by the UB dev team. In addition
+ the scope of the change has been assessed to limit the potential of
+ regression. This is to ensure each SRU request is strictly limited in
+ scope with the risk(s) being easily determinable.

  [Impact]

Reported via our discourse support forum:
  https://discourse.ubuntubudgie.org/t/two-small-issues-sticky-applet-
  window-missing-shutdown-button/247

“popup menu for usb drives”-applet can occasionally become stuck on its
popup position and cannot be closed without logging out and logging back
  in.

The impact is for Ubuntu Budgie only and anyone running the budgie
desktop together with the DropBy applet.

  [Test Case]

   1. Using Budgie Settings, check that on a panel that the DropBy applet has
been added - please note, the dropby applet is installed through the package
"budgie-dropby-applet"
   2. Insert a USB pen-stick
   3. A popup window will appear on the panel - this is the drop by applet
   4. Dismiss (close) the popup window by clicking elsewhere on the desktop
i.e. move the focus away from the popup window
   5. Repeat steps 2,3 and 4 several times. In each and every time the popup
menu should be dismissable.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The worst case scenario is that the panel applet does not correctly
start or function correctly when a USB stick is inserted. This can be
mitigated easily by removing the panel applet via Budgie Settings or
uninstalling the applet via command line/ Software Center

   * The OP who raised this has tested this for a week and verified the fix in
a test PPA
   * Ubuntu Team has independently verified that the fix works by constantly
checking the test case repeatedly.

[Bug 1773770] Re: Hotcorners applet needs pressure option

2018-07-02 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

- [EDIT] SRU fix covered by (LP: #1771606)

+
+ Budgie Extras is a set of python based applets that are either
+ preinstalled or are available to be individually installed. They are
+ exclusive only to budgie desktop users and cannot be installed or run on
+ any other desktop environment.
+
+ A number of issues have been raised since the 18.04 release. As part of

+ the scope of the change has been assessed to limit the potential of
+ regression. This is to ensure each SRU request is strictly limited in
+ scope with the risk(s) being easily determinable.
+
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ HiDPI users have found that accidental activation of hotcorners
+ capability is difficult to control due to the hard-coded and fixed pixel
+ way-point i.e. the higher resolution means the actual activation point
+ is tiny compared to standard/low resolution laptops and desktops. It is
+ therefore highly likely that hotcorners will be accidentally activated
+ breaking the users workflow.
+
+ The impact is for Ubuntu Budgie only and anyone running the budgie
+ desktop together with the Hotcorners applet.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. Using Budgie Settings, check that on a panel the Hotcorners applet has
been added - please note, the hotcorners applet is installed through the
package "budgie-hotcorners-applet"
+ 2. Check that the hotcorners pressure option is enabled.
+ 3. Slide the pressure bar to the right to make the activation of hotcorners
less likely. Slide the pressure bar to the left to make the activation of
hotcorners more likely.
+ 4. Ensure a hotcorner is set to activate an action by using the panel
hotcorners applet
+ 5. Move the mouse cursor to the corner - it will respect the pressure level
set
+ 6. Repeat steps 3, 4 and 5 several times with different pressure levels.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * The worst case scenario is that the activation point remains
+ inconclusive for a wider and higher range of resolutions that was not
+ expected. This is no different from the current situation and the
+ accidental activation will continue. This can be mitigated easily by
+ removing the panel applet via Budgie Settings or uninstalling the applet
+ via command line/ Software Center
+
+ * Ubuntu Team has independently verified that the fix works using a
+ HiDPI based laptop as well as a standard resolution laptop.

+ [Other Info]

+ Original description

Description: Fix activation issues with HiDPI
HiDPI users have found that accidental activation is difficult to
control due to the hard-coded and fixed pixel way-point. Since
HiDPI resolutions can vary, this patch enables users to control
   the pixel way-point via a slider-bar in budgie-settings

- The text field to hold the directory info is editable even though the initial
state of the enabling checkbox is ticked off. This patch ensures the field is
grayed out (sensitive) initially and enabled only when the enabling checkbox is

+ [Impact]
+
+ The quicknote applet has a text field to hold the directory info. It
+ has been reported that users are entering directory info into this field
+ but quicknote is not respecting the value entered where to save the

+ The impact is for Ubuntu Budgie only and anyone running the budgie
+ desktop together with the QuickNote applet.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. Using Budgie Settings, check that on a panel the Quicknote applet has
been added - please note, the hotcorners applet is installed through the
package "budgie-quicknote-applet"
+ 2. Check that the directory field remains disabled by default.
+ 3. Tick the enable custom directory checkbox
+ 4. The directory field becomes enabled. Choose a known directory.
+ 5. Enter some words into the QuickNote panel applet
+ 6. Open the directory/folder which was chosen. Look at the contents of the
QuickNote text file. It will contain the contents shown on the panel applet
+ 7. In Budgie Settings untick the custom directory checkbox
+ 8. Enter some words into the QuickNote panel applet
+ 9. Open the directory/folder which was originally chosen. Look at the
contents of the QuickNote text file. This will NOT contain the current
contents of the Applet field i.e. demonstrates the applet no longer saves its
info to a custom location.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * None.
+
+ * Ubuntu Team has independently verified that the fix works.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ None
+
+ EDIT:
+
+ Original description
+
+ The text field to hold the directory info is editable even though the
+ initial state of the enabling checkbox is ticked off. This patch ensures
+ the field is grayed out (sensitive) initially and enabled only when the
+ enabling checkbox is ticked.

[Bug 1773773] Re: Fix display of 12hr midnight time on ShowTime applet

** Description changed:

As part of

+ regression. This is to ensure each SRU request is strictly limited in
+ scope with the risk(s) being easily determinable.
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ The Showtime applet can display its time in 12hr format. When the time

+
+ The impact is for Ubuntu Budgie only and anyone running the budgie

+
+ 1. Using Budgie Settings, check that on a panel the Desktop Showtime applet
has been added - please note, the Showtime applet is installed through the
package "budgie-showtime-applet"
+ 2. Manually change the time to be between midnight and one am.
+ 3. Tick the 12hr format checkbox
+ 4. The desktop time shown change to 12.xx AM
+ 5. Untick the 12hr format checkbox
+ 5. The desktop time shown changes to 00:XX format

[Bug 1773785] Re: Fix alignment in the "Mode" section of WorkspaceOverview applet

2018-07-02 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

- [EDIT] SRU fix covered by (LP: #1771606)
+ [EDIT] Master SRU fix covered by (LP: #1771606)
As part of
+ ongoing 18.04 support the Ubuntu Budgie Team proposes to wrap up fixes
+ on a very targeted basis. In this series of SRU's we have wrapped up

+ the scope of the change has been assessed to limit the potential of
+ regression. This is to ensure each SRU request is strictly limited in
+ scope with the risk(s) being easily determinable.
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ The Workspace Overview applet shows a dropdown menu. One of its menu
+ options is "Mode" that contains sub-menu items. The padding of this
+ changes depending upon which theme is currently in use. For the default
+ theme Pocillo - there is a relatively large space between the edge of
+ the menu item to the text string. This visually looks strange. The
+ submenuitem should be fixed spacing via a tab-character rather than
+ based on spaces i.e. a space character sizing changes depending on the
+ theme being chosen.
+
+ The impact is for Ubuntu Budgie only and anyone running the budgie
+ desktop together with the Showtime applet.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ 1. Using Budgie Settings, check that on a panel the Workspace Overview
applet has been added - please note, the Workspace Overview applet is installed
through the package "budgie-workspace-overview-applet"
+ 2. Open the mode submenu - observe the indentation between the edge of the
submenu and the menu strings.
+ 3. Choose a different theme from Budgie Settings
+ 4. Repeat 2 - the indentation should be the same between themes.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * None. This is a visual issue only and has no impact on capability.
+
+ * Ubuntu Team has independently verified that the fix works.
+
+ [Other Info]
+
+ None
+
+ EDIT:
+
+ Original description

The Mode submenu alignment is not correct on some themes.

[Bug 1771606] Re: [SRU] Fix budgie panel hang when USB inserted

** Description changed:

Budgie Extras is a set of python based applets that are either
preinstalled or are available to be individually installed. They are

  any other desktop environment.

A number of issues have been raised since the 18.04 release. As part of

the scope of the change has been assessed to limit the potential of
regression. This is to ensure each SRU request is strictly limited in
scope with the risk(s) being easily determinable.
+
+ This is the master SRU for this and the following defects where are also
+ resolved:
+
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-extras/+bug/1773785
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-extras/+bug/1773773
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-extras/+bug/1773771
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-extras/+bug/1773770
+ https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-extras/+bug/1779766

[Bug 1791378] [NEW] Try install option from EFI boot displays login screen not the live session

2018-09-07 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

Testing todays (7th Sept 2018) of cosmic.

Using virtualbox. Set to boot the ISO using EFI option.

Select Try Ubuntu option from ISO Grub.

Expected to see the live session. Instead saw the login window. I had
to login using ubuntu-budgie / ubuntu-mate to see the live session.

Tested both Ubuntu Mate and Ubuntu Budgie

Apologies if I raised this against the wrong package!

[Bug 1799369] Re: Fullscreen app window hides behind panel about 5px

2018-10-23 Thread fossfreedom
I'm running Pocillo theme at scale 100% and no overlap when the top-
panel is switched to left - then a window is maximised.

Suggest remove applets one by one to see if any applet is displaying an
oversized icon that is pushing the panel size artificially out.

Do check also that the panel size is not too small - most themes
require the panel to be 37px to 51 px in size.

guess you must have installed a PPA with a later version. You should

[Bug 1811900] Re: SRU 3.28 latest git to bionic

2019-04-10 Thread fossfreedom
Daniel - I have a tentative budgie specific fix that works on UB 19.04 -
so should in theory work on 18.04 + this version of mutter.

Just trying to get some feedback from budgie upstream at the moment.
Assuming if OK, then will need to SRU to 19.04/18.10 & 18.04

[Bug 1824102] [NEW] Animations leave window artifacts when enabled

2019-04-10 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

For Cosmic and Disco, animations when enabled leave visible window
artifacts when windows are opened and closed.

This has been reported upstream https://github.com/solus-project/budgie-
desktop/issues/1627

The issue is due to changes made in mutter 3.30 and later.

Bionic is also proposing to bring in changes in a proposed mutter
release which similarly breaks budgie LTS.

Umm... as long as mutter doesnt get released before the budgie SRU!

Probably safer to leave as is until the budgie SRU is agreed.

Note. Havent yet tested on 18 04. Only 19.04

** Patch added: "debdiff for the Disco SRU"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/budgie-desktop/+bug/1824102/+attachment/5254998/+files/disco.debdiff

** Description changed:

For Cosmic and Disco, animations when enabled leave visible window
artifacts when windows are opened and closed.

This has been reported upstream https://github.com/solus-project/budgie-

The issue is due to changes made in mutter 3.30 and later.

Bionic is also proposing to bring in changes in a proposed mutter
release which similarly breaks budgie LTS.

[Bug 1824102] Re: Animations leave window artifacts when enabled

2019-04-11 Thread fossfreedom
** Description changed:

- For Cosmic and Disco, animations when enabled leave visible window
- artifacts when windows are opened and closed.
+ This SRU issue specifically resolves window animation issues caused my newer
versions of mutter - later

  [Regression Potential]

- * discussion of how regressions are most likely to manifest as a result
- of this change.
+ * The regression potential is that not every budgie animation effect passes
through the code that has been
+patched and potentially there could be certain budgie animations that may
appear "broken".
+If this unlikely scenario occurs, a further SRU would be required to
resolve edge cases.
+Alternatively, animations can be turned-off as was currently implemented
in in 18.10 & 19.04

+
+Without out this SRU, either the migration of LP: #1811900 will break
budgie animations in 18.04 LTS
+or it will hold up the mutter migration until more discovery work is made
by upstream budgie developers.

redisplayed indicating that the polkit dialog has been successfully closed.

   * Issue 2: This bug is very difficult to pin down and reliably reproduce.
For a test case, pressing CTRL+ALT+T to open a terminal, Super + E to open a
file-manager window should always work after a full reboot & login
Recommend repeat the above for 10 reboots or more after budgie-desktop is
upgraded

   * Issue 3: Press Super + N to open raven notifications. Press
CTRL+ALT+Right Arrow. Note that Raven remains open even though the workspace
is changed.
     - Upgrade budgie-desktop, reboot and retry the above. Raven will now
close when the workspace is switched.

   * Issue 4: Covered by LP: #1824102 test cases.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Issue 1: Due to the nature of the crashes observed (unexplained
crashes in glib, wnck libraries), it is highly unlikely that this fix
alone will resolve all polkit issues. In terms of regression the number
of "system error" prompts with a polkit headline after a reboot and
login will be either the same or reduced - but such messages can be
ticked by a user via the system error dialog to not appear again.

   * Issue 2: The likelihood of regression is negligable since the
handling of custom keys is now how the maintainer of gnome-settings-
  daemon recommends (upstream https://github.com/solus-project/budgie-
desktop/issues/1763). In any-case, there is a potential that custom key
handling will still occur to be not available after a reboot, requiring
a user to continue using the current workaround of logging out and
  logging in again.

   * Issue 3: The only regression here is that raven remains open during a
workspace switch. This is thought highly unlikely from the code review
  undertaken.

Robert suggest create a new bug report to cover your issue. Dont forget
to tag this with disco and iso-testing tags.

Since I created this issue report I am pleased to report that the kernel update
in this release candidate iso has resolved this issue.

[Bug 1821823] Re: No wireless networks displayed for broadcom BCM43142

2019-04-14 Thread fossfreedom
ok - decided to reopen this.

Have retested todays release candidate ISO

For this laptop - I did not connect via a wired connection.

I did choose the restricted drivers option in the installer and during
the installation I saw that it said it installed the bcmwl-kernel-source

On restart no wifi was available.

I connected via wired and ran sudo apt install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-
source and immediately after completion wifi was available.

I repeated the whole installation again as above and again no wifi was
available after an install.

Attached is the installer syslog file found in /var/log/installer

[Bug 1821820] [NEW] Cannot boot or install - have to use nomodeset

2019-03-26 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

On this 19.04 beta I have to use nomodeset to boot & install Ubuntu
Budgie.

This is different behaviour from 18.04 and 18.10 where it booted and
installed just fine without nomodeset.

Without nomodeset, grub/efi disappears, and after a while a solid rather
than blinking cursor on a black screen is seen. It does not boot into a
live session, nor displays the ubiquity window

[Bug 1821823] [NEW] No wireless networks displayed for broadcom BCM43142

2019-03-26 Thread fossfreedom
Public bug reported:

For 19.04 UB did a minimal install. I selected the ubiquity proprietary
option and expected the broadcom driver to be found and installed.

On reboot I could not see and wireless networks. I went to the
Additional Drivers window and it stated that the computer was indeed
using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver and was in use.

This is a regression - in both 18.04 and 18.10, the same steps also
installed the driver, and wireless networks were found and could be
connected to.

Odd. That was already installed.

I then ran a apt --reinstall install for that package and this time
wireless started.

Thus it appears the kernel module wasn't successfully installed by
ubiquity?

[Bug 1811900] Re: SRU 3.28 latest git to bionic

2019-03-27 Thread fossfreedom
Sorry - I havent had the time yet to see what happens with this patch
(revert_volume_calc) on Disco - but for bionic, this revert patch
resolves the animation issues for bionic

Note - I couldn't get a simple git revert of the commit to apply - too
many changes in this file I guess with the other cherry-picked commits.
