[Bug 220419] Re: Bad interactions with kvm and vmware (CPU left in VMX root mode?)

2008-07-02 Thread cement_head
This sounds EXACTLY life the problem I had in Hardy 8.04.1 . On an HP
6910p laptop with ATI video controller. Did a fresh vanilla install.
Installed VMWare 1.0.6 such that I could put windows XP on machine as a
guest. The initial install worked well and didn't seem to be a problem.
I must have installed something either in the VM Guest (XP) or on the
Host Ubuntu, because the kernel panic was reproducible and constant.
Five minutes after booting the guest OS, hard machine lock up. Causes
me to go back to Gutsy. Maybe I'll tool around in the forums again to
see if I find a solution.

2008-07-28 Thread cement_head
if you have an INTEL chip, try:

$sudo apt-get install powertop

sudo powertop

Then see what is polling your kernel. I believe it's an interrupt
problem. Are you using b43 module? If not, blacklist it at sudo gedit
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

[Bug 228633] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 Freezes

2008-07-28 Thread cement_head
powertop is a program that figures out what is polling the kernel and
causes a high amount of interupts
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PowerTOP).

It will also figure out what (if any) processes are hogging the CPU by
polling it (asking it) ALL THE TIME and tieing up the CPU.

You can manually execute the commands, or choose the automated option.
In the screenshot that you've attached, choosing "A" would cause the
AC97 (your sound subsystem) to be shutdown when it isn't being used. In
other words, you get to control your running programs, not the creator
of the entity.

Hi,

In Gutsy, the problem was solved by using specific IP addresses. In
Hardy same behaviour. I think it was a fundemental change in SAMBA, but
I've figured it out. Guess you can close this one off.

2008-07-11 Thread cement_head
UPDATE: I don't think the problem is FLASH.

Rationale:

1) Completely uninstalled FLASH 10 via Snaptic (the way it was installed)
2) Reboot
3) Install FLASH 9
4) Tried MIRO; same behaviour - no video
5) Reinstalled MIRO same behavior
6) Upgraded to FLASH 10; FLASH works everywhere.

Conclusion: Bug is in MIRO? or recent update to GDM?

How do I debug MIRO?

[Bug 225939] Re: No sound after suspend/hibernate on hardy

2008-08-10 Thread cement_head
The issue only occurs when the sound is NOT suppressed during the wake-
up (resume) from suspend. I can tell because the mute button is not
illuminated. During these occurrences, I will get a BIOS alarm for a
couple of seconds. If I then toggle (mute/un-mute) the sound on/off,
then sound then works. If I do not toggle the sound (mute/un-mute), the
sound does not work. After successfully toggling the sound, further
suspend-resume cycles work well, until the sound issue seemingly
(randomly) re-appears.

[Bug 313586] [NEW] video does not scale totem/xine/miro

2009-01-03 Thread cement_head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Xine, Totem (both GStreamer & Xine backend), and MIRO play video files
(mpgs, movs, dvds) in the incorrect width. The width is very narrow and
can't be adjusted.

VLC and MPlayer work fine.

Interestingly, XINE splash starts in the "correct" ratio and then I
assume reads a config file and changes abruptly to a narrow shape.

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.2
Release:8.04

This is a fresh install of Hardy (all updates as of Jan 3rd, 2009) What
files do you need to fix/diagnose this?

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)

[Bug 314734] [NEW] USB ports on docking station not recognised by laptop

2009-01-07 Thread cement_head
Public bug reported:

Hello,

  Running Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.2 LTS (all updates; Wed Jan 7 9:32
AM). Running on an HP6910p laptop and an HP 2008 150W (Part#: KP081UT)
docking station. Sound, ethernet, VGA is good - I suspect the rest with
the exception of the USB ports. There doesn't seem to be any power
coming out of them. Should I be loading a different module?

Please advise...

[Bug 314734] Re: USB ports on docking station not recognised by laptop

2009-01-08 Thread cement_head
If I boot the machine in the docking station with the mouse attached,
then the docking station USB ports are recognised and all works as
supposed to - no problems. In fact ALL USB ports on machine AND docking
station work.

Question: How do I force Ubuntu to recognise the docking port USBs when
a device is hot plugged?

Thanks

2009-01-09 Thread cement_head
WORKAROUND:

1) Create a menu item using System>Main Menu. I put this under "Other"

2) Type: Application; Name: USB Refresh; Command: lsusb; Comment:
Refreshes the USB Ports

3) Use the following icon (see attached)

4) Got to Applications>Other>USB Refresh. Right Click>Add this launcher
to panel

Anytime you need to refresh you usb ports, hit the applet icon on your
panel.

[Bug 411605] [NEW] gspca-source will not build on Intrepid Ibex kernel 2.6.27-14

2009-08-10 Thread cement_head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gspca-source

I cannot use a webcam in Intrepid that was working in Hardy. The
problem is failure to load and run the gspca module. I have tried to
download the gspca-source and build according to instructions, but the
process fails.

This bug has been reported as FIXED. It is not. Here is a detailed
output of what I did.

[Bug 406631] [NEW] capslock causes multimedia key/sound softkeys to be rapidly pressed/depressed

2009-07-29 Thread cement_head
Public bug reported:

I have an HP6910p Elitebook notebook. Using Intrepid Ibex (kernel
Linux 2.6.27-14-generic #1 SMP Wed Jul 29 09:01:45 UTC 2009 i686
GNU/Linux). When I press the CAPSLOCK key, all the softkey multimedia
keys between the keyboard and the LCD screen go "haywire". This wasn't
the case in Hardy. No crash, just flashing on/off, volume going up and
down, sound muting/unmuting, presentation & infomation buttons flashing
on/ff.

Makes CAPSLOCK useless.

Normal behaviour should be normal CAPSLOCK behaviour.

[Bug 64006] crashes "locale" "gtk-applets"

2006-10-04 Thread cement_head
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libc6

I upgraded to libc6 (2.4-1ubuntu10) (edgy eft) so that I could try to install
softwaresuspend2. Before I got there lbc6 has caused strange behaviour
(randomly stops being updated on the GUI) of gnome-powermanager applet.
Additionally, I receive a GTK-WARNING and GDK-WARNING during just about every
package change to the system. It seems that the "LOCALE" cannot be set.
Several other pieces of software have stopped working altogether and have had
to be removed, such as FIRESTARTER.

Re: [Bug 64006] Re: crashes "locale" "gtk-applets"

2006-10-04 Thread cement_head
Hi,

Just libc6. BUT during this upgrade, I had to remove lots of older
packages that conflicted. I have subsequently forced a downgrade back
to the dapper libc2.36 and think (hope) that solves the problems. All
the Locale warnings dissappeared.

I guess I'll wait to install softwaresuspend2.

[Bug 145903] Re: Kernel update 2.6.20-16.32 breaks evolution/wifi/suspend

2007-10-26 Thread cement_head
Update:

The issue can be replicated on either the 2.6.10-15, or the 2.6.10-16
kernel if the network connection is changed during the suspend when then
machine is in stasis.

Example:

1) Machine is working fine with various applications open, sometimes (but not
always) including evolution with a WiFi PCMCIA removable card.
2) Close lid to suspend. Machine SUSPENDS-TO-RAM. Remove card, pack laptop in
bag.
3) Arrive at location where I will use a ethernet CAT5 cable & plug cable into
laptop.
4) Open Lid. Everything seems fine. Five to ten minutes later machine begins
to hang when evolution is used, either from the previous launch prior from
suspend, or from a relaunch after waking.

  Something is confusing the kernel when the internet connection change
occurs during the suspend. Probably not that big a deal for most modern
laptops which have internal wireless cards, but those who don't - its
annoying.

Workaround:

   DO NOT reconnect a different internet connection prior to awakening
the machine. After the machine has awoken, it seems not to be a problem
to either plugin the CAT5 cable (or insert the WiFi card).

Hi Kees,

I've installed and am running the 2.6.20-15.27 kernel has no issues
so far. 5 suspends in a row; including suspending while attached to an
external monitor. Must have been the 2.6.20-16.31 to 2.6.20-16.32

The -15.27 kernel is much faster on my machine (Dell i8100 laptop).

Re: [Bug 145903] Re: Kernel update 2.6.20-16.32 breaks evolution/wifi/suspend

2007-09-28 Thread cement_head
Hmmm,

I dumped my 2.6.20-15 kernel a while ago. I've been running 2.6.20-16
for a long time. I noticed the problem immediately (the "next" suspend)
after the following updates:

(From the synaptic history):

Commit Log for Tue Sep 25 07:48:46 2007

Upgraded the following packages:
linux-headers-2.6.20-16 (2.6.20-16.31) to 2.6.20-16.32
linux-headers-2.6.20-16-generic (2.6.20-16.31) to
2.6.20-16.32
linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic (2.6.20-16.31) to 2.6.20-16.32
linux-libc-dev (2.6.20-16.31) to 2.6.20-16.32
linux-source-2.6.20 (2.6.20-16.31) to 2.6.20-16.32

After this upgrade & reboot the next suspend ran into issues. The O/S
has been working flawlessly since early August. I am using the nVIDIA
glx drivers.

Do you want me to download and try the 2.6.20-15 kernel?

[Bug 128628] Re: dbus update breaks suspend

2007-07-27 Thread cement_head
Bug solved. Adjusted DPMS setting in ACPI-default:

Current working ACPI-default file:

# Comment the next line to disable ACPI suspend to RAM
ACPI_SLEEP=true

# Comment the next line to disable suspend to disk
ACPI_HIBERNATE=true

# Change the following to "standby" to use ACPI S1 sleep, rather than S3.
# This will save less power, but may work on more machines
ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=mem

# Add modules to this list to have them removed before suspend and reloaded
# on resume. An example would be MODULES="em8300 yenta_socket"
#
# Note that network cards and USB controllers will automatically be unloaded
# unless they're listed in MODULES_WHITELIST
MODULES="bcm43xx "

# Add modules to this list to leave them in the kernel over suspend/resume
MODULES_WHITELIST="nvidia "

# Should we save and restore state using the VESA BIOS Extensions?
SAVE_VBE_STATE=false

# The file that we use to save the vbestate
VBESTATE=/var/lib/acpi-support/vbestate

# Should we attempt to warm-boot the video hardware on resume?
POST_VIDEO=false

# Save and restore video state?
SAVE_VIDEO_PCI_STATE=true

# Should we switch the screen off with DPMS on suspend?
USE_DPMS=false

# Use Radeontool to switch the screen off? Seems to be needed on some machines
# RADEON_LIGHT=true

# Uncomment the next line to switch away from X and back again after resume.
# This is needed for some hardware, but should be unnecessary on most.
DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH=true

# Set the following to "platform" if you want to use ACPI to shut down
# your machine on hibernation
HIBERNATE_MODE=platform

# Comment this out to disable screen locking on resume
LOCK_SCREEN=true

# Uncomment this line to have DMA disabled before suspend and reenabled
# afterwards
# DISABLE_DMA=true

# Uncomment this line to attempt to reset the drive on resume. This seems
# to be needed for some Sonys
# RESET_DRIVE=true

# Add services to this list to stop them before suspend and restart them in
# the resume process.
STOP_SERVICES="mysql "

# Restart Infra Red services on resume - off by default as it crashes some
# machines
RESTART_IRDA=false

# Switch to laptop-mode on battery power - off by default as it causes odd
# hangs on some machines
ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true

I have a few small weird things (know feature issues) with OO, but mostly it
works well. Nothing like what you describe.

Hi, I'm sorry for the time elapsed.
I used your "sources.list". Anyway the error is:
---

assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:4720): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_screen_get_font_options: assertion

Do you think i can resolve installing OpenOffice 2.0.4? I was reading it
worked fine.

Yep, that's what I did, but...

[Bug 96430] Re: MASTER: Request for new-legacy nvidia drivers (9631)

2007-04-11 Thread cement_head
Hi Oliver,

I don't think so...going to the 9755 driver will bugger the whole X
server (again), at least on my card (nVIDIA GeForceGo 2).

Manual install of the 1.0-9631 driver from nvidia's website installed
the XServer Setting control menu item. Using Ubuntu's nvidia-glx
package does not.

This appears to be a bug.

It is small, but annoying.

Hello,

  I don't know if you noticed it but there is a new package in the
ubuntu repository, it is called nvidia-glx-new and it it the nvidia driver
version 1.0.9755. The old nvidia-glx package is back to nvidia driver
version 1.0.9631. So that should fix this issue.

 Thank you very much to the ubuntu team and community for the good
work.

Thanks.

O.D.
