I have a similar problem (if not the same). I figured out that keyboard shortcuts operate on "Master Volume" instead gnome-volume-applet let you choose the channel to track. In my case, the channel "Master" doesn't affect the output volume at all. The real master volume is instead "Headphone". This is a common problem due to non perfect sound card detection at kernel-level, and explains the channel chooser option in gnome-volume-applet. AFIK the option "reduced resources" is not involved in this bugfix (it disables other things too). The patch released involves the gconf's key /desktop/gnome/interface/enable_animations. When this option is disabled there is no minimizing effect and MAYBE other effects in gnome are disabled too (i don't know which). Maybe i didn't explain myself well. The program doesn't crash, it sticks on loading (the window is unresponsive) and i have to force quit (kill the application). I forgot to say that i was already forcing the kernel to use KMS (this is indeed what i was testing), so it is not enabled by default.
