I forgot to say that i was already forcing the kernel to use KMS (this is indeed what i was testing), so it is not enabled by default. I ran several test and the ONLY way to get DRI2 working is from console: 1 boot with KMS off 2 close X 3 reload radeon module with KMS on 4 and restart X
