this issue is from a first install on a brand new nuc from an iso from a wget
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/bionic-desktop-amd64.iso

just now i did a wget followed by a dpkg -i for:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.16-rc2/linux-headers-4.16.0-041600rc2_4.16.0-041600rc2.201802190311_all.deb

UTC 219 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

on boot it finds the bluetooth speakers and mouse and both work
i bring up the setup's and change wifi access point and bingo i lose speakers
and mouse which are on the bluetooth
the gnome setting bluetooth screen show the mouse and speaker still attached
and scanning for devices. They however are not attached (the speakers show no
connectivity the mouse shows trying to connect).

[Bug 1750317] Re: PGD 0

2018-02-20 Thread steve cohen
update:
the good. other than the first install and reboot it has work well.

the typical. when i reboot the system the speakers have to be power
cycled to re-connect each time or go to bluetooth and ask for a
reconnect.

The mouse connects automatically most of the time. On the not connect, a
power cycle is required to get it to reconnect not a reboot or a
suspend. The power cycle includes pulling the power plug. Not just using
the software button on the nuc.

enough for tonight.. retry tomorrow

[Bug 1721092] Re: systemd-resolved and dns-masq make CPU 100% when using lxc name resolution

2018-03-04 Thread steve cohen
hello in bionic
i also tried to get systemd.resolve and dnsmasq working

the /etc/default/lxc-net setup the dnsmasq using ultimately creating the
dnsmasq shown below
the config did assign static and dynamic ip's to the containers however i could
not access dynamic addresses by name. so i added to /etc/systemd/resolv.conf
attached below. that worked with the effect of the cpu utilization.

it seemed to jump up after i went to the net and was not accessing the
containers on 10.0.3.x as if systemd-resolve was sending queries to the
dnsmasq in a loop.. please look at global section has 10.0.3.1 as the
dns server and that doesn't look right. it is placed by
/etc/systemd/resolv.conf

ps ax:
dnsmasq --conf-file=/etc/lxc/dnsmasq.conf -s lxc -S /lxc/ -u lxc-dnsmasq
--strict-order --bind-interfaces --pid-file=/run/lxc/dnsmasq.pid
--listen-address 10.0.3.1 --dhcp-range 10.0.3.128,10.0.3.254
--dhcp-lease-max=253 --dhcp-no-override --except-interface=lo
--interface=lxcbr0 --dhcp-leasefile=/var/lib/misc/dnsmasq.lxcbr0.leases
--dhcp-authoritative

with :/etc/systemd/resolv.conf
[Resolve]
#DNS=
DNS=10.0.3.1
#FallbackDNS=
#Domains=
Domains=lxc
#LLMNR=no
#MulticastDNS=no
#DNSSEC=no
#Cache=yes

i was also watching tcpdump on llxcbr0 which had no activity
after a while the systemd-resolve climbed approaching 100% with dnsmasq 50%

[Bug 1721092] Re: systemd-resolved and dns-masq make CPU 100% when using lxc name resolution

2018-03-04 Thread steve cohen
added to dnsmasq.conf cli --dns-loop-detect
this stopped the cpu overdrive .. also allowed only resolution of the
containers.. lost the real world.

[Bug 1440174] Re: Keyboard and Mouse don't work with latest Kernel

2015-05-29 Thread Steve Cohen
What, please, is the status of this bug? Is there a fix or candidate
fix in any newer version of the kernel?

Since I signed on to this bug in early April, I have been looking for
some resolution to it. For awhile I was checking each new kernel
release to see if the bug was fixed. I have downgraded to 3.13.0-46,
the last version that works with my computer. The later releases can
not even be installed by the auto-installer.

[Bug 1402335] [NEW] scanimage -L finds fitjitsu 04c5:11fc but if repeated does not find it

2014-12-13 Thread steve cohen
Public bug reported:

a fresh install of gnome distro of ubuntu 14.04 and just updated. It is
a System76 gazel with usb2 and usb3 plugs. It does not matter which plug
is used. all usb's seem to attach to usb3-?? where ?? is indexed up one
each time i replug it.

is the only error i detect in the system logs.
(The scanner a fitjitsu 6110 works perfectly on a usb2 ubuntu 12.04 system with
no driver added.)

if i re-plug it and type:
steve@skc:/tmp$ scanimage -L
device `fujitsu:fi-6110dj:28760' is a FUJITSU fi-6110dj scanner
steve@skc:/tmp$ scanimage -L

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

 re-plug it back and type:
steve@skc:/tmp$ scanimage
scanimage: open of device fujitsu:fi-6110dj:28760 failed: Error during device

while i'm getting the error on scanning, i'm not sure this is a usb2 usb3
xhci_hcd issue

[Bug 1402335] Re: scanimage -L finds fitjitsu 04c5:11fc but if repeated does not find it

2014-12-14 Thread steve cohen
tried on an older system76 gazel ubuntu 12.04.5 the usb3 have xhci and do not
work. the usb2 is on ehci and works
the new system 76 gnome 14.04.1 appears to have all 3 usb's (2 are usb3, 1 is
usb2) which are on xhci. To me this is indicating the xhci driver is not doing
the correct thing since 12.04.5. All help appreciated.

2014-12-14 Thread steve cohen
simple-scan:
if i plug it in it finds it but does not scan; on the first pass. after it
exits, it does not find any scanner until i physically re-plug it in.

lsusb shows the scanner all the time while it is plugged in

i replaced the scanner with the logitech to see if the plug work without
rebooting.. and the mouse works fine.
the snapshot was with the logitech plugged in.

ie it is still using the xHCI host controller

i no longer get core dump warning. scanimage -L simply does not find
the device. simple-scan says no scanner available. sane-find-scanner
does not detect the scanner. So technically it has gone form seeable but
not working to invisible.

A possible test would be to make the xHCI a module or a kernel flag such
it could be blacklisted and see if the EHIC actually works on 14.04.

[Bug 1318090] [NEW] Bluetooth will not pair with Lenovo Bluetooth Keyboard

2014-05-09 Thread Steve Cohen
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04
Lenovo Thinkpad T540P and Lenovo KT1255 bluetooth keyboard

With bluetooth turned on, turn on keyboard and search for devices.
Device is quickly found. Try to pair with it. A six digit random
number is generated by the software with instructions to type it on the
keyboard and press enter. Always fails to pair although the number is
typed correctly.

[Bug 1974063] Re: system load indicator does not show memory usage, ignoring preferences

2022-05-24 Thread Steve Cohen
I concur with Anthony Chubb's comments, which were indeed the original
impetus that motivated me to begin tinkering with the indicator width in
the first.place. I forgot to mention this in the wake of the more
catastrophic problems that occurred when I tried to change the width.
But had these symptoms not existed, I never would have bothered messing
with the width. My ideal state would be to see the "Mem: 6.2 GB" text
that I used to see, and not flickering.

As to my Question 2 above, I did discover that this setting was
maintained in dconf under the key of /de/mh21/indicator-multiload/, as
indicated in my link above. Navigating there, I was able to change the
width back to 40 and reinstall the indicator without breaking the
system.

However, I only see the graphical display, which is better than nothing,
but not ideal, and it does flicker.

[Bug 1970124] Re: duplicity backup fails with obscure error message Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-03 Thread Steve Cohen
Might I ask why the admins have marked this bug as "Invalid" and
unassigned to anyone? Does this mean that no one will look at it
anymore? I feel that this action should be explained.

That said, I have taken the step of eliminating previous backups and now
the system works again and the information Kenneth provided was helpful
in leading me there, although I do question the Samba theory for reasons
stated above.

I feel that at minimum duplicity should issue a more informative error
message, indicating perhaps the name of the file that actually has the
truncation problem.

[Bug 1970124] Re: duplicity backup fails with obscure error message Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-04 Thread Steve Cohen
I have one idea, based on my experience yesterday.

I renamed the /home/scohen/Taormina directory and then created a new
directory of that name on the remote drive. A quick check of disk space
informed me that I would not have enough room for a full backup on the
remote drive. So I looked more closely and saw that there were a lot of
very old backups under another directory that I could easily do without
on the drive, and deleted those, ran the backup successfully.

My idea is this: what happens if there is not enough room to complete
the backup on the intended drive? What error message does duplicity give
in that case? I have no memory of any particular error message on
2021/10/07, though I do remember a problem, and being unable to solve it
then, I simply gave up on backups for awhile, which I hoped to get back
to with 22.04.

My idea is that this situation could lead to a truncated backup file,
and if the error message were not clear, confusion on the part of the
user. If a backup fails due to lack of disk space on the destination, a
specific error message to that effect would be useful. I don't know if
that's what happened here but it could be.

[Bug 1970124] [NEW] duplicity backup fails with obscure error message Ubuntu 22.04

2022-04-24 Thread Steve Cohen
Public bug reported:

I try to do a backup onto a network location (ssh://192.168.1.61 - I can
successfully connect to this location via ssh). The backup completes the
scan phase, then dies with error messages like this:

Failed to read /tmp/duplicity-xdksj47v-tempdir/mktemp-_5khubio-2:
(, EOFError('Compressed file ended before the end-of-
stream marker was reached'), )

While the backup is running, we can see a duplicity* directory under

-rw--- 1 scohen scohen 0 Apr 24 12:52 mkstemp-cx21bs8l-1

However, note that this is not the directory mentioned in the failure
message.

A scan of the directory after the failure reveals no files like
/tmp/dupl*

Why is it trying to read files that do not exist?

[Bug 1970124] Re: duplicity backup fails with obscure error message Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-01 Thread Steve Cohen
Kenneth:

First, thank you!

I don't run duplicity via the command line. I run it using the Ubuntu
GUI app "Backups" which I believe is just a gui-name for deja-dup. In
that setup I have a saved Preferences which governs how the Backup is
done, which files/directories to back up, which to exclude, where to
send the backup, etc.

Trying duplicity -v9 fails with
$ duplicity -v9
Command line error: Expected 2 args, got 0
Enter 'duplicity --help' for help screen.

Evidently, the deja-dup app is saving this information in a config file
somewhere and then building a command line to send to duplicity. I
don't see how to invoke duplicity so as to use these config files, whose
location I don't know either.

So, next step is to try to invoke the debugging via a deja-dup command
line.

I try this (per deja-dup --help):

$deja-dup --gtk-debug=9 > log

and it starts the GUI, producing the same failure message; however
nothing is appended to the log file, so evidently --gtk-debug=9 in
deja-dup is not equivalent to duplicity -v9.

Finally, using the Google, I find that the way to turn logging on for
deja-dup is

DEJA_DUP_DEBUG=1 deja-dup

Redirecting this to log does indeed produce a massive file.
Hopefully, this is what you are looking for. If not please let me know
how to
1) run duplicity so that my deja-dup preferences are used or
2) run deja-dup to produce the input you want.

log head and tail will be attached.

[Bug 1970124] Re: duplicity backup fails with obscure error message Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-02 Thread Steve Cohen
Your command gave too much output. After a few attempts, I modified it
to this, which produced useful data:

$ for f in *.gz; do echo "--- $f ---" >>output; tar tzf $f >/dev/null
2>>output; done

This confirms that your hypothesis is correct. The file with the error is
duplicity-full-signatures.20211007T135951Z.sigtar.gz

[Bug 1970124] Re: duplicity backup fails with obscure error message Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-03 Thread Steve Cohen
H. Many questions.

The networked machine is an old desktop running a very old version of
Ubuntu. There is no Windows involved here, and no mount so I'm not
understanding where Samba comes into the picture. As I said in the
original statement of the bug, I am connecting via the SSH protocol, so
I am not entirely sure where the question of mounting a drive comes in.
If I do mount a drive from the other machine, would this solve my
problem and enable backups to finish, and if so, what protocol should I
then set up duplicity to use? Or would another of the available
duplicity protocols work better for me?

Even more puzzling, a directory listing of the troublesome file shows it
is < 2GB in size by a factor of 16 or so:

-rw-rw-r-- 1 scohen scohen 262180864 Oct 7 2021 duplicity-full-
signatures.20211007T135951Z.sigtar.gz

I suppose truncation might have occurred to a size well < 2GB.

Also, why is this file so big? In looking over the earlier output, I
appear to be backing up a lot of old junk that no longer requires backup
or even existence. Would eliminating some of it help me?

Or, since I have no need of earlier backups, might I be well served by
simply erasing everything in the Taormina directory of the backup drive
and starting over?

Thanks.

2022-05-03 Thread Steve Cohen
Perhaps I should also add that my installation of Ubuntu 22.04 dates
from last week when it had just come out. The timestamps on the backup
files on the remote machine date from last summer/fall, when I was
running 20.x or 21.x. Might a bug have been there that is no longer
there?

[Bug 2109907] [NEW] Grub Spring 2025 update cannot be installed

2025-05-03 Thread Steve Cohen
Public bug reported:

$ lsb_release -rd
No LSB modules are available.
Description:Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS
Release:24.04

$ apt-cache policy grub2
grub2:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 2.12-1ubuntu7.3

Packages
 2.12-1ubuntu7 500
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu noble/universe amd64 Packages

A package was pushed to me by the system, along with many other updates.
The update could not be done because of the error in the attached
screenshot.

I installed every package in the update notification except this one, and
things are working as they had before, but looking at the bug
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2-unsigned/+bug/2055835) for
this update, as referred to me in the Software Updater, it seems significant
and something I should report.

How may I install this package?

[Bug 2109907] Re: Grub Spring 2025 update cannot be installed

2025-05-03 Thread Steve Cohen
This bug should probably go against the GUI Software Updates app. At
the suggestion of someone else, I tried to install it with apt on the
command line. It worked!

sudo apt update grub-efi-amd64-signed

succeeded in installing the update and Software Updates no longer thinks
there's anything to be updated.
