the lsusb shows the scanner present. i've plugged it into what is
supposidly the usb2.0 plug and while it shows it is on bus(hub)1 the new
kernel boot as re-mapped the numbers as below:

[ 0.756337] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: xHCI Host Controller
[ 0.756342] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: new USB bus registered, assigned bus
number 1
[ 0.756425] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: cache line size of 64 is not supported
[ 0.756439] xhci_hcd 0000:00:14.0: irq 25 for MSI/MSI-X
[ 0.756489] usb usb1: New USB device found, idVendor=1d6b, idProduct=0002
[ 0.756490] usb usb1: New USB device strings: Mfr=3, Product=2,
SerialNumber=1
[ 0.756491] usb usb1: Product: xHCI Host Controller
[ 0.756492] usb usb1: Manufacturer: Linux 3.18.0-031800-generic xhci-hcd
[ 0.756493] usb usb1: SerialNumber: 0000:00:14.0
[ 0.756570] hub 1-0:1.0: USB hub found
[ 0.756585] hub 1-0:1.0: 14 ports detected

ie it is still using the xHCI host controller

i no longer get core dump warning. scanimage -L simply does not find
the device. simple-scan says no scanner available. sane-find-scanner
does not detect the scanner. So technically it has gone form seeable but
not working to invisible.

A possible test would be to make the xHCI a module or a kernel flag such
it could be blacklisted and see if the EHIC actually works on 14.04.
