[Bug 251997] Re: package wine 1.0.0-1ubuntu4~hardy1 failed to install/upgrade: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

2008-07-25 Thread Scott Ritchie
This failed because /usr/share/fonts/wine was not empty, most likely
because you manually installed a font there (Tahoma perhaps?) As a
rule, package upgrades don't delete manually installed user files, so
this failure was "correct"

The correct place to put those fonts is in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/fonts

The good news, of course, is that Wine now has its own tahoma font so
this kind of workaround isn't likely to confuse things again.

[Bug 260957] Re: Wine always crashes with Age of Empires II

2008-08-24 Thread Scott Ritchie
Judging from the AppDB pages
(http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=99),
the crash is probably due to the copy protection; Wine can't yet handle
the weird system calls it makes. You can run the game with a crack in
the interrim.

I'm not sure which copy protection method AoK uses, but there's been
some work on the less invasive ones like safedisc in Wine

[Bug 262257] Re: Wine 1.1.3 be available in Intrepid?

No, it will not. The 1.1x branch of Wine contains regressions compared
with 1.0, and that's a really bad thing for the default distro package.
Intrepid will use the stable branch of Wine (currently 1.0), although
1.0.1 will likely be out before release and we can backport other small,
specific patches if needed.

[Bug 305678] [NEW] Unresponsive extract button with multi-part rar file

2008-12-05 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

This one is a little strange, but it is reproducible for me on my local
setup. I open a multi-part rar file by double clicking the .r00 file,
then I click extract. The default folder shown is the current
directory, but when I click extract nothing happens - the button clicks
but the dialog acts as though nothing happened. Other buttons work as
expected; it's as though extract simply does nothing.

What's even stranger is the workaround I've discovered: I can then use
the same dialog to change the directory (eg going to the parent folder),
and then I can go back to the same folder I was in. Then the extract
button works fine.

Packages.bz2 for Intrepid Universe, but it's not obvious to me that
we're using it. Recompressing this with lzma shows another 10% savings
over Packages.bz2

[Bug 144083] Re: "package lists" should be downloaded as diffs (Contents-i386.gz)

2008-11-20 Thread Scott Ritchie
I'm going to bring this up at UDS. I don't have any specific
statistics, but I imagine that daily updates place a pretty substantial
burden on the mirrors.

Another thing worth considering is moving from .gz to .lzma (or better)
compression of the Packages file itself. A simple test shows that
Intrepid can save another 10% over .bz2 by using Packages.lzma

[Bug 301174] [NEW] Annoying system beep plays instead of alert sound

2008-11-22 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I installed Intrepid fresh onto this laptop (HP Pavilion dv9540us), and
the alert sounds don't play. Instead, whenever I make one of the rather
common mistakes that cause an alert sound (such as hitting backspace one
too many times), there's a very loud, and very annoying, beep from the
internal speaker.

If I go to system->preferences->sound, where I would expect to disable
the annoying beep, I find that the System Beep tab is now gone. I agree
with this decision - this is 2008, we should never be using the internal
speaker for anything. Especially not shutdown noises, where it's not
even obvious how to disable it.

After googling, however, I found that many others have this problem, and
strangely enough the solution is to click "disable alert sounds" even
though the alert sound itself never plays.

So, there are two bugs here then:
1) The nice alert sound isn't used at all. I've never heard it in Ubuntu, only
annoying PC speaker beeps.
2) We use the PC speaker instead of the alert sound, and disabling the PC
speaker is difficult since we no longer have the system beep tab.

[Bug 285404] Re: ubuntu intrepid -- crazy annoying system sound (not beep, but alert-like sound) over and over!!!

2008-11-22 Thread Scott Ritchie
Was the alert the same sound you can hear in

If so it means something was generating the alert sound every 5 seconds.
That could be anything from a weirdly behaving program to a key stuck
down on the keyboard.

[Bug 293013] Re: Wine crash when trying to do a Copy

/home/olivier/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Open\
Workbench/bin/npWBench.exe
d:/trav/Planification/EquipeTransverse-2008.rmp

You shouldn't give full paths to wine directly, but instead to wine
start. Or, you should be in the local folder when launching it.

I'm not sure if it's an issue, but
d:/trav/Planification/EquipeTransverse-2008.rmp should probably be using
\ instead of / as well.

[Bug 290986] Re: Connecting to WPA-ENTEPRISE network 1) removes info about CA cert; 2) kills nm-applet

2008-11-23 Thread Scott Ritchie
I believe I have the same problem. At first I didn't choose a cert,
assuming things would be done automatically for me. I got a scary
warning about a cert, so I hit cancel instead of ignore and then clicked
the cert button. No cert was available, giving me a very confusing
"choose" option that just pointed to my home folder. I gave up and hit
cancel, then went to go back and try ignore -- at this point network-
manger crashed.

Marking high priority since it breaks the network entirely.

[Bug 301432] [NEW] 3D Chess mode generates confusing error in Live CD, desktop

2008-11-23 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

installed desktop generates this mess:

No Python OpenGL support
No Python GTKGLExt support

Please contact your system administrator to resolve these problems, until then
you will be able to play chess in 2D mode.

This is even true after enabling restricted drivers (amd64) on Intrepid.

[Bug 130224] Re: gtkfilechooser save/save as dialog misplaces focus

2009-06-16 Thread Scott Ritchie
I don't think we're quite done here - we still need to figure out if
some areas of the dialog should have focus even after the user clicks on
them. There are two cases where we would want this:

1) if the user doesn't need to search, typing should go towards the user's
other task (changing the to be saved filename)
2) if the user doesn't know that searching is even possible, then they will
navigate manually before searching

The places section, in particular, is something that doesn't need to be
searched since it is so small - removing focus from the filename save as gets
in the way in that case. I'm not sure about 2, but it will require user
testing.

On second thought, I think 2.2.5 is more appropriate for an SRU than a

[Bug 378015] Re: Jaunty: iTunes does not start with WINE (installation seems to work ok), therefore no iPhone 3G activation from Jaunty

2009-06-24 Thread Scott Ritchie
Hello,

This message: "wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\itunes.exe"
means that itunes.exe was not in the folder you ran that command from.
Try launching iTunes from its shortcut in Applications->Wine->Programs,
or alternatively changing to the directory within the terminal before
running it. Thank you!

[Bug 342326] Re: Jaunty: WINE Error - Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 does not start

2009-06-24 Thread Scott Ritchie
The latest Wine betas appear to start Outlook 2003 now, however it may
have other problems. There are some older test results here:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=2526

Wine 1.2 (which would include these, and more, fixes) may work it's way
into Karmic if it's released on time, however it's too early to tell at
this point.

Wine will recommend the ttf-mscorefonts-installer package (and thus

We already recommend ttf-liberation, and Wine itself ships tahoma and
symbol, however these fonts combined aren't enough as you've noticed.
Anyway I've already made the change in the beta packages, thanks for

[Bug 138713] Re: Gnometris uses Gnome foot logo instead of Ubuntu theme

2009-06-03 Thread Scott Ritchie
I am reopening this bug because I am working on a separate branding-
ubuntu package that contains the branded image above (and, in the
future, other examples of branding).

What's needed in gnometris is simple probing for the existence of the
branded artwork and then falling back to the existing artwork. In this
case. the branding will be at: /usr/share/branding/gnome-
games/gnometris/pixmaps/gnometris.svg

[Bug 138586] Re: Gnometris controls very unresponsive when keys are held down

2009-06-03 Thread Scott Ritchie
The issue is that Gnometris is being very stupid about rendering - every
frame it's rendering every single svg brick separately. This is why it
gets slower with more bricks on the screen even when they're the same
color. If it did some sort of caching this likely wouldn't be an issue.

[Bug 28835] Re: "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2009-06-11 Thread Scott Ritchie
Is there any reason to have separate eject/unmount for USB sticks? To
my knowledge there's no harm from ripping out an unmounted USB stick, so
the eject button might as well simply unmount it in that case.

I'm in favor of removing "eject" from USB sticks altogether - all it
really does is require the user to unplug/replug it if he wants to get
back to his data rather than double clicking it again. When you click
unmount there's a nice consistency - you see the stick disappear as you
unplug it, and whenever it's plugged in there will be a way to access
it.

Now, this still leaves the problem of "unmount" being a technical term,
but that can be renamed to "safely remove" or something to that effect -
the important point is for USB sticks we only need unmount.

[Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is

2009-06-11 Thread Scott Ritchie
There is a general problem here that we insist on having "Open with foo"
rather than actual application-defined verbs. The top four entries on
the right click menu shouldn't be "Open with Archive Manager" but rather
something like "Open archive"

[Bug 28835] Re: "Unmount" in volume right-click menu, is tech-speak and undiscoverable

2009-06-12 Thread Scott Ritchie
Regarding CDs: can't we control what happens when the user hits the
eject button? If there's still data to be written we could conceivably
hold it up and warn the user about the problem. I don't see any need to
"unmount" a cd though (similar to how you don't need to eject a USB
stick)

[Bug 386125] Re: wine submenu aren't translated in italian in the app menu

2009-06-12 Thread Scott Ritchie
The relevant file in the package is debian/wine.menu and it gets
installed to /etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged

Here's the menu spec: http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-
spec/latest/ar01s04.html

I'm actually not sure how they're translated -- regular .desktop files
can supply inline translations, or use gettext, but the .menu files seem
to be handled differently.
